I watched Football Focus the other week and the rule change/new format came up.
Craig Hignett is managing somewhere in the lower reaches and was very scathing. However, the studio guests (one was John Hartson, the other something to do with West Ham I think) thought it was great for the "Premier league youngsters to get proper game action".
So, not surprisingly, the "haves" think it's fine, the "have nots" can go fuck themselves.
If I were Checkatrade I'd take a serious look at my continued sponsorship as it's making them look like cunts in my view.

The problem is made worse by changing to group matches rather than straight knockout. So a crap competition has been made worse by the deadest of dead rubbers. I really hope we put out a complete U23 side tomorrow or if Wilder feels someone needs match time then play them. I wonder if no fines will be levied against teams as it will make their competition look even worse

It's a joke with the Prem U21 teams, they'd be better inviting say the Scottish Championship clubs, top 4 from the Conference, top 2 from NI and top 2 from the Welsh league instead to liven the competition up. Maybe have the group stage pre-season and knock-outs during the season.

They could do a lot worse than doing similar with the League Cup by merging it with the Scottish League Cup.

and that might be a sensible suggestion (a bit too sensible to be honest) but it then misses the very point of it all, to let the Premier League knob jockeys find some playing time for the multitude of players they've stockpiled with no intention of giving them a PL game.

Glyn Hodges disagrees

The game will end 0-0
both teams and supporters will then face the ignominy of a farcical penalty shoot-out
what a fucking joke

It has be a complete disaster.

However the Football League is stuck between a rock and a hard place, the Premier League have decided they want their youth teams playing against football league sides and the Premier League have the ultimate sword of damacles hanging over the Football League pulling up the drawbridge of promotion to The Premier League.

The FL should call their bluff and tell them to pull the drawbridge up the spineless fucking pricks.

I cannot overlook the hypocrisy of the premier league, exemplified by Glynn Hodges, that this 'revamp' was designed to give young English talent a chance to play against older, experienced pros. It's total bollocks and a load of bs once again. I can't remember a time when the premier league gave an honest answer to anything.

I want to see the Blades win every game we play and would have loved to have progressed in this competition despite the fact that I think it's time it should be scrapped. However we should ignore the rules and play an entire team of youngsters tomorrow night. If a first team player gets a bad injury it will be a lot worse than a £5000 fine

I think this is the thin edge of the wedge. The premier league are paving the way for their "B" teams in the league screwing over the non-league & lower leagues alike. God help grass roots football

Great idea - a sort of British Cup. That'd really spice things up.

In a way, what's been great about this season's competition is the sheer wall-to-wall hostility towards it (matched by encouraging indifference on match days). It's been a total farce, & so enjoyable to see how embarrassing it's been for the authorities.

I've been proposing the same things for years:-

1. Dissolve the Football League Trophy, it's a shite competition that hardly anyone cares for.

Result: less games for FL clubs to cater for.

2. Close the League Cup to PL clubs and make it a competition for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th tier with a European place on offer to the winner pending suitability of facilities in line with governing body regs etc.

Result: a carrot for FL clubs that creates a competitive tournament and also reduces the number of games for PL clubs.

3. Impose a PL rule stating that seven homegrown players must be included in match day squads. Perhaps even financial incentives put up by the FA for a total number of homegrown appearances.

Result: young players get their game time at least from the bench which protects the future of our national team and hence the prestige of our national game.

Makes too much sense doesn't it?

I was listening to Talksport a few months back and the subject of this tournament came up. Colin Murray was saying it was patronising to the lower league club and that it was a disgrace and Stuart Pearce was saying it was great for the youngsters . Literally every caller agreed with Murray and Stuart Pearce was dumbfounded. He couldn't get his head around at all why everyone was so against it when "it gives our youngsters great experience"

Totally out of touch with the game below Premiership level most of these pundits. They seem to think if you support a lower league club it's not the same as supporting a Premiership club and that you are more interested in "our youngsters" getting experience so they can go on and achieve things with England.

There was Twitter comment earlier re the Wolves attendance which said they must have counted the ball boys and imaginary friends!!! :)

Off the BBC sport website:
Oxford secured their place in the last 32 of the Checkatrade Trophy despite losing the longest penalty shootout in English football at Chelsea.

Elsewhere in the group stage of the new-look tournament, the development squads of Swansea, Brighton and Wolves progressed.

Their attitude is who cares about the lower league teams anyway.
