Retsos signing makes Zero sense all around

They won the league spending a fraction of what their rivals did. FFP still applies in the PL, it’s no longer possible to do a ‘Man City’.

I hadn't wiped the tears of laughter from eyes to be able to see above Villa in that last.

The only slight mitigation for Brighton is the spend is over the last 3 seasons, Villas is just over half a season.

Both deserve a Wow though
 
I'm really excited to see what Retsos can do. He's got outstanding pedigree for one of such a young age & seems to have all of the sorts of attributes we really need for the overlapping centre back role. Long term he could be a great signing, I just can't think when we'll give him an opportunity this season (unless forced through circumstance).

Seems like the negotiation on any fee has been done – we just have to green light it in the summer if we want to sign him.

Why does a signing have to be for the here and now? I have no doubt that if Retsos shows the ability he has, his fitness is good and he has the right attitude, even if he doesn't start a game this season, Wilder will wrap up the deal and he will be a regular next season.

I don’t know what to make of Villa. League Cup finalists but in a relegation battle. I suppose if they stay up it’s been a decent season for them, I’d have been happy with us just staying up but getting to a cup final.
If they go down I suppose they can sell Grealish and McGinn to balance the books a bit.
I think some of their signings will look better next season, when they’ve properly acclimatised to the PL, if they stay up. If they go down, some may be in for a shock.

Totally agree, Jekyll and Hyde team.

I'm also not sure they spent well, which I think has been compounded with panic signings in January, Drinkwater ffs?? Personally if I was smith I'd have tried everything to sign Maupay. They were relying on Wesley for goals, an unknown that not played English football let alone PL football, just not a sensible strategy to me, certainly not as your main striker.

If they do go down, and personally I think it's them and West Ham with Norwich, then I agree they'll have some major issues. When Grealish and McGinn go they will have no method of play at all. Are they also in potential trouble regards P&S if they go down? How does it work as the loss rules are different in the PL?

How nice it is to be stressing about qualifying for Europe instead.

I get the impression there may be too many people having input at Villa. You know, I know and probably most people know that almost every foreign signing takes a while to settle in but, as you say, they sign Wesley to be an immediate starter and key player. It makes little sense.
 
I agree, on the input front, can't imagine the Billionaires not asking questions etc given their investment.

I also think their predicatment is having a huge impact, Grealish looks to be trying to do too much and the JTW signings as examples, it also seems to be making Smith really whiny.

Everytime I see him interviewed after a match he looks deflated along with moanig and blaming anyone and anything he can. It's not so much what he's saying it's how he's coming across, I get they're in a relegation battle, he just comes across as really defeatist. He maybe totally different in the dressing room or at training but I when I see and hear him he doesn't inspire me to want to go into battle for him.

A poster paraphrased a speech wilder gave after Leeds lost to someone last season, sorry can't remember the thread, now I know we going for promotion but that speech would've made me fight for him on the beaches and in the trenches, can imagine him doing something similar if we were fighting relegation, the antithesis of Smith.
