Retire the number 2 shirt.

If George had still been a Blades player, my view on this might be different but as Gilchrist has already been wearing it, I wouldn’t want the number 2 to be retired.
Having it available is a huge honour for whoever wears it & it gives them the challenge to live up to a standard that George set.
Maybe find a way of adding ‘Starman’ or ‘GB’ to the shirt somewhere - something that adds to the meaning of the number 2, rather than not seeing it again.

Couldn't agree more. In the days of numbers 1-11 (which some of us remember) it couldn't have happened!
 
I’m not a fan of retiring shirt numbers perminantly. The only time i’ve ever agreed is AC Milan retiring Maldini’s number, because nobody will ever come close to matching his feats.

I wouldn’t be adverse to not having a number 2 next season out of respect for his memory, and having a perminant shrine/rememberance of George at the ground.
 
I don't think we should retire number 2, end of

But if for some reason the club did go down this route, it should be retired for 7 seasons to reflect the 7 he spent with us, rather than retired permanently

But I don’t believe GB would want the #2 retired. I just don’t.

Times have changed in lots of ways. With squad rotation it's less common to have a fixed person for years on end at a number spot. A lot of the number spots were fixed and based on 442 as well.
Also take Wes for example, he elected never to take #1, probably as reminder of the L1W history thing.
In all instances it's a well meant idea, but I don't think it works out.

I suppose we have to move with the times and I remember thinking it was odd that in football programmes the teams were laid out as 235 when in reality most were playing 433, 442 or 442 - I can't remember what happened when 'sweepers' appeared on the scene.
As I see it retiring a number might mean something for a year or two but in modern day football where players move on so frequently - a numbered shirt only means something for one season at a time.

Naming buildings after people is another case in point. As a student there a was an admin building called 'The David Morrison' building'. At the time I wasn't in the least bit interested as to who he was (and neither was anyone else to the best of my knowledge) but for a number of years after qualification, I used to ask other people who this bloke was? Eventually the building was demolished prior to an extension being built and the name was lost forever - and I still don't have a clue who he was!

What about a 'Hollywood Hall Of Fame' style star-shaped name plaque on the floor by the Players' Entrance, so players old and new know what they've got to aspire to, as they enter for each match ?
 
If GB had signed for us this season played 4 games before his passing then it would have been much easier to retire the number 32 squad shirt as Panathanikos have done.

All our greatest players who won our only Division 1 title, 4 FA Cups, GB cup and 2 FA Cup runners up appearances never wore shirt numbers. Shirt numbers didn't appear until 1928 when numbers 1-11 were prevalent for the next 50 years plus.

Numbers 1-11 are sacrosanct imo and should never be retired. Some great players with significant service to the club have worn the famous number 2 shirt. Our last FA cup final captain in 1936 Harry Hooper (269 appearances), Fred Furniss (279), Cec Coldwell (410) and the great Len Badger (458) were all legendary right backs. As was our current manager with over 100 appearances.

George Baldock will always have a special place in our affections and the nature of his passing does make it harder to come to terms with the fact we will never witness the Starman running down the right again.

His lasting legacy is one of commitment and and for that reason he should be honoured by a Shield or Cup in his name imo that teams can compete for. Whether that would be an annual pre season arrangement against the likes of his former clubs would be a decision for SUFC. The loss of George has been felt not only by Blades but also by Lambs at Tamworth, Dons at MK, U's at Oxford, Cobblers at Northampton and the Shamrocks at Panathanikos. An annual coming together in tribute to George would ensure his memory is everlasting.
 
No, for me don't retire it. Let's honour it instead by it being on the pitch flying down the wing.

Why not name the blades man of the match award in his name, The George Baldock man of the match!
 
I think there should be a star on the number 2 in memory, just a small gold star on the bottom of the number.
Or the word "Starman" across the bottom maybe?
Can't retire it, its a memory, and more of an honour that the number 2 is still running down the right!!

There is an existing No. 2 which makes it impossible to retire the number. Retiring numbers is generally not done here and much easier when the player in question is in possession of that number. I'm sure something suitable will be done, with the input of the family.

For me I’m really finding all this chuntering on about shirt numbers etc and other contrived ideas in really bad taste

Just days ago a man has died aged 31 leaving behind a wife and a child who won’t remember him. It really is a tragic in the proper sense of the word.

We all should leave it to the club to organise a tribute. Share memories, grief etc. That’s normal and part of the process but in my opinion we should leave it at that for now.
