He can do whatever the hell he likes. The new club would just need to pay us compensation.
Yes, up to him but when he signed for the Academy he and his family knew that he will be registered with the club until he is 24 unless the club releases him or the new club pays us compensation.

Could potentially be at the World Cup in December and be free to speak to clubs in January.

Not free cos he is a SUFC Academy product

Maybe so but that doesn’t mean he’s not free to speak to clubs as far as I’m aware? Also didn’t he join the academy quite late meaning any compensation due would be relativity nomina?

Just looked at Fulham got decent money despite only having Harvey Elliot for only a year or two.

Yeah I think this will be a big factor.

Bear in mind that the Russian League didn't stop, the Ukrainian season was cancelled and he chose to exercise his right to leave Rubin Kazan while they were in the middle of a relegation battle, it doesn't feel like a situation he'd want to go back to (having already left once) and is unlikely to be welcomed back to.

They were relegated in the end (season finished last weekend), which might simplify things.

Interestingly they were 1 place above the relegation zone going into the last day, at home to the team immediately below them. They had a small chance of staying up properly if they won and other results went their way, but even a draw would've guaranteed them a place in the relegation playoff places and avoided automatic.

They lost, thanks to conceding a 90th minute winner and missing a penalty in the 11th minute of injury time.
Out of interest; the foreign players in Russia that were allowed to suspend their contract - do you know if many did? I’m just wondering if it was pretty standard or if what Uremovic did was unique.

I know that if you are at the Academy early on , the club can hold your registration until you are 24. Yes, Jebbison joined our Academy late and I am not sure if the registration rules are the same

He can speak to whoever he wants and the only thing that the new club needs to do is pay us compensation through some fixed formula, which works differently if he is staying within England or moving overseas, one scale's agreed by the PL/EFL, the other by FIFA. We definitely do not have the ability to say "until you're 24 you either play for us or you don't play at all"

In addition to this any compensation would be reduced by us not having Cat 1 academy status I believe

I think we need to be looking at what other clubs do. Most will make sure the youth player is on a fairly long contract before they send them out on loans or play them in the first team. Once they’ve played senior football, they’ve been in the shop window and they want a contract that reflects their increased status. If we’re trying to build a team that contains academy players, we have to accept that we give them decent contracts or they’ll fuck off to one of the 20 PL clubs that are quite happy to take a punt and give them one. Pigs tried the hardball approach with Hirst and it got them nowhere.
