Two years ago, at the end of the season Cloughie had signed six players, by the middle of June.

McNulty and JCR joined in May and Basham, Butler, James Wallace and Ben Davies signed in early June..
Out of these six players, in my opinion, only Basham can really be described as a good signing, although perhaps McNulty may eventually turn out to be so. The others have all been poor signings, with Wallace and Butler being particularly horrendous.

I'm as desperate for new signings as anyone, but I would prefer CW to get the right players in, rather than follow Cloughies example that season, when deals were done early for players that were clearly not the right players that we needed. We are going to have a much smaller squad, so we cannot afford for CW to get this wrong.

CW in his most recent interview says we are signing two or three centre backs, a left footed midfielder and a target man type striker. He says he will tell the fans as it is, so I fully expect these players to be signed. He's said he's going to sign these players since he joined us and he's not saying anything different now.

That is fine as long as the reason we are not signing people at the moment is cos we are waiting for the right people.

The suspicion is, based on who the owners are, that the reason we aren't signing anyone is because we are potless and are going to be stuck with rubbish no one else wants.

Did this really need a new thread? Exactly how may times.......

Great OP though, puts things nicely into perspective. Wonder if it should have gone in the "be careful what your wish for" thread though?

It's in the right forum, isn't it?

I fully accept people have different opinions regarding if a post should be in a particular thread, or if the subject warrants starting a new thread.
I do think however that there is too much being posted of late, where people are telling others what they should and should not do. This is an open forum and people make there own decision on these things. I find reading posts where people are attempting to impose there own opinions on what justifies a new thread or not, just as boring as reading numerous threads on the same subject being posted.

Thanks however for the comments about putting things in perspective. That was the idea, as I'm not sure that the subject of Clough signing six players by mid June had been raised before and was relevant, due to the current panic for signings. It didn't work when Clough did his work early, so I prefer to give CW as much time as he needs to get the right players in.

I voiced my opinion today over a thread started when the one underneath was basically the same worded differently. This is a open forum as you say and opinions are the nature of the beast and it's made all the better for the difference in them.I just think the negative posts regarding transfer are too early and far too widespread, personally i have not yet got my jock strap in a twist still time for that to happen same as there is plenty of time for transfers though. good op mate different slant

Followed up with Craig Alcock, Harrison McGahey, Michael Higdon and Jay Mac. Not to mention the sale of Maguire.

Worth bloody waiting for.

At the time, I was totally against Clough being sacked, however when you look at the signings he made two seasons ago, they really were horrendous. Out of the six he signed up to the middle of June, only Basham and possibly McNulty were any good and the further signings you listed were just as bad, if not worse.
Higdon was on big money and ranks as one of the worse value money signings we have probably ever made, although Cloughies signing of James Wallace runs him close. I still think personally that McGahey may eventually have made a player, although his attitude is supposed to be suspect.
Out of signings Clough made, I wish CW had given Freeman a chance, as I definitely believe there is a player in there. Other managers appear to also think this, if the reported interest from Championship clubs is true.

Have to say that, whatever happened 2 years ago, I'm panicky. And I will be until we get a centre-half signed and we can see the actual standard of player that's being brought in.

We just don't know how far Chris is being backed yet, nor how successful he can be in attracting suitable players to the club at this level.

Not saying the O/P doesn't raise reasonable points, nor that Chris hasn't made a decent start especially in bringing Duffy, nor that my enthusiasm for Wilder has waned at all. Just saying that, until we start actually signing one or two decent centre-halves, I'm worried. So be it.

Well now we've got a new board, maybe someone will be able to make a sane fucking decision and we can get some talent in, must've been odd for Chris though, knocking on the door of an empty room for the last few weeks whilst the money men have been playing musical chairs again!!!

The OP makes some very valid points however my understanding is that CW WANTS to sign 3 x cb's etc etc and not that he will. Just a thought.......

I am sure that Duffy was quoted as saying that one reason he signed, was the quality of player that CW had got lined up and he subsequently had confidence in our ability to have a real go for it.
Think we will see two or three over the line by the end of the week.

Keith Hill said McGahey was offered a contract by Adkins, but the situation changed when Wilder was appointed.

I can only assume that Wilder and McGahey both thought he needed a long run in a team to develop and Wilder said it was unlikely to happen with us.

It's interesting to see what he's like as a player given a long run in the first team. He did ok for us, especially considering age and limited opportunities. I think he could turn out to be a good lower league CB.

Interesting. It does look like that the 9 players that agreed to sign for us a few months ago were Adkins recommendations. Hammond and McGahey are two but not sure about Duffy and Hussey. As for the remaining 5, did they change their minds?
