Didn’t want to spoil the game for the poor BCFC supporters and poor old Woy.Shocking that the ref didn't give a second yellow - completely bottled it.
Yeah have to agree, although not the reason why we lost, it was at least a yellow, I couldn’t see the covering players as to whether DOGSO might have been in play but either way it was a 2nd yellow anyway so should have been the same outcome. It’s poor officiating, the assistant should be helping out like the one at Birmingham City didShocking that the ref didn't give a second yellow - completely bottled it.
Shouldn’t be any excuses on this appointment he did the Leeds Southampton play off final and EFL cup final a couple of years ago too. Plenty of experience despite his relatively young age
It doesn’t matter. He will have had the same “give them nothing” email that the rest have had.Shouldn’t be any excuses on this appointment he did the Leeds Southampton play off final and EFL cup final a couple of years ago too. Plenty of experience despite his relatively young age
100% this ! Although I haven’t refereed at their level, I did referee county, U16s academy and open age men in high level Sunday leagues, obviously the stakes aren’t as high but I was more than happy to explain a decision, there were occasions where afterwards in the bar we were discussing it and someone that had a different angle said i was wrong which is fair enough you can’t be a robot and if you don’t have assistants you are looking for offsides, along with the usual and all you can do is try and get yourself in the best position possible and give what you see. Personally I think with referees if they aren’t willing to explain should have head cams/glasses so it can be seen the angle they are watching from, at pitch level it is easy for players to be blocking your path and you are second guessing in a sense of what is the most likely option not ideal but it happens or you “sell” the decision you gave you could easily get away with a few.It doesn’t matter. My disdain for referees grows ever stronger. It’s not just the bad and inconsistent decisions, but their unapproachable demeanor, the arrogant waving away of any player looking for an explanation, and more than anything the fact that their is no transparency to the scrutiny of the abysmal performances we have seen. Obviously the manager’s reports will just be ignored as sour grapes, but does anyone go through performances and look at some of these howlers with them, asks them to explain what they saw and how it differed to the same offence being reffed differently earlier in the game? Is anyone in authority genuinely looking at inconsistency across the season, across all Championship games?
I don’t know how managers keep their cool, and particularly someone like Wilder, who I think has been remarkably subdued on this.

I don’t know if it’s the pace of the modern game that is the problem or what seemingly causes the inconsistencies across a season but something needs to be in place to address the situation. I would prefer a referee to hold his hands up post match after reviewing it and saying yeah I got that one wrong rather and holding themselves to account or even saying I gave it because I saw x yes the deed has been done but at least some form of explanation would be handy. It’s not easy to referee at any level, probably even worse when you get 2 U16s Sunday morning teams that are nearby rivals but that is for another day
VAR would solve this problem. It doesn’t matter. He will have had the same “give them nothing” email that the rest have had.

The standard will only improve if it becomes less daunting when they begin at grass roots level. The physical and verbal abuse even at youth level is dreadful.I am not one who particularly likes watching a 10 v 11 game but its the inconsistency which is so frustrating. And it always seems to be us that get the rough end of the stick. That tackle on FS is classic. I think the standard of refereeing in Champ this season has been the worst I have ever seen. The efl really need to get their act together. Do they have a system for reviewing refs and trying to improve the standard?
It's so inconsistent, at Brum away, the referee was chatting to his assistant to send off Seriki, but then weeks later at Bristol City, they aren't on speaking terms for some reason. The Laws of the game are pretty clear (which is unusual)It's like the refs at this level are barely taking advice from their linesmen and fourth officials who may have seen the situation better.

"The other 'on-field' match officials (two assistant referees and a fourth official) assist the referee with offences when they have a clearer view than the referee...."
For me it is one of the clearer of the laws under Law 6, usually it's grey but the Law sets out the referee has the final decision however the other match officials should be helping him/her out.
The referee has given the free kick on this one, in the sense he has blown his whistle but you have to question who has given it as from the build up, the first one you can see the ball being played and in between the referee and assistant, however by the time the incident happened covered in screenshots 2 & 3 there is a Bristol City player blocking the referees view which would indicate the assistant has given it. We can rule out DOGSO due to the number of covering defenders in the penalty area however it isn't a careless challenge and is reckless (when a player acts with disregard to the danger to, or consequences for, an opponent) it should have been a 2nd yellow card without a doubt, either under a reckless challenge or unsporting behaviour or commits any other offence which interferes with or stops a promising attack
Literally take your pick of 3 yellow card offences, it shouldn't matter if you are in minute 1 or minute 91 if its a yellow card it's a yellow card and if they are already on a yellow they should have thought about it before not our problem, early bath time.
Great summary….. refs in Championship have been pretty poor this season from what I’ve seen. It’s the lack of consistency that is scary. It’s no excuse for how crap we’ve been thus season, but we have had a few unfortunate decisions. However the one at Bristol C last Saturday to not issue a 2nd yellow was the worst by far. So blatant and you could see the player was expecting it as were most of their fans. Ref totally bottled it!It's so inconsistent, at Brum away, the referee was chatting to his assistant to send off Seriki, but then weeks later at Bristol City, they aren't on speaking terms for some reason.
