What you can’t see with the penalty unless you were bang in line was how Cooper pulled out and the striker slowed down and slightly changed direction to initiate a collision. The ref bought it

It was a dive. To be fair to Sky they called it right. The refs positioning was as shocking as it was all night. He guessed.

It was a foul and a yellow, if that’s a red then ‘game’s gone’.
There was no last man and without that he was through on the keeper. It was blatantly denial of an obvious goal scoring opportunity which has been a red as long as I've been reading the 'You are the Ref' column.

To repeat a Mick McCarthy classic when co-commentating on a match once .

" If the ref thinks that's 10 yards.... , I wouldn't buy a carpet off him"

It was embarrassing watching O'Hare literally walk the yards for him and them him somewhat deliberately walk incorrectly to get the number of "yards" he wanted.

You play that back to the PGMOL and I am not sure how they can not think this ref is either a fucking idiot, bias or bent.

We bumped into 2 Southampton fans walking to the ground and by chance again on the way back. One had told us on the way there that his friend had been a fully qualified referee and officiated in the championship. On the way back he agreed the ref had been dreadful and pointed out he had officiated more championship matches than him. That must surely tell you something

Seriously, it's about time some of the refs in this league and the PL start getting reprimanded.

At the moment most refs seem to think they ref every game perfectly, including their officials some of whom seem to struggle to keep up with play and seem to just guess whether its offside or a foul.

I’ll have to wait for the extended highlights for another replay. The couple of replays I saw at the time of the incident suggested to me that he was towards the right hand side of the area and not really bearing down on goal.

It looked to be a foul and a yellow. I don’t think it was a red in most people’s book and no one suggested it was at the time but happy to be proved wrong.

As soon as we knew that the lead official did not know how to count 10 yards, our players should have tried to get the match abandoned. Nothing he did from that point on changed my view. An absolute dickhead, who threw away his professionalism and made things personal tonight.

I've never seen anything like the 8 yard thing. Pretty much edge of the box to penalty spot so it was 6/7 yards at best, never mind counting 8 and sticking to it. Absolutely baffling!

Not why we lost but you could see just looking at it it wasn't 10 yards. Then hamer who is probably better from 25 yards has no room to drop it down. Infuriating decision.

Just arrived home and have only skimmed through this. I very rarely criticise referees but tonight I was furious. It was obvious with the pitch markings that the wall was nowhere near 10 yards back. I would estimate 8 at the most and then the clown measured out 8 yards - they looked short yards as well!

The refereeing ruined what had been a good game and that isn't sour grapes because of the defeat.

Don't know what CW was thinking kicking the ball like he did - see there's a long thread regarding that which I can't be bothered to read at this time of night

Zoomed into that clip as best as I could with the potato video quality and slowed it down.

8 and a quarter steps. Very uneven steps at that.

I once attended an event where former FIFA referee and Senior Blade George McCabe was the guest speaker. He told one story about how he mistakenly blew for full time five minutes early. By the time he realised his error, the teams were back in their dressing rooms, so he went into the dressing rooms and got both sets of players back out onto the pitch to play the missing five minutes.

He said that afterwards, he was told by those in high places that if he hadn't taken this action, he would have been finished as a referee. This is what should happen to the utter plank in charge tonight. Gone. Not even back to League 2, but to the Sheffield Bible Class League at best.

The plank that decided to put another plank from League 2 in charge of a big Championship clash should also be under a microscope .The whole experiment cost one club points lost and suspensions for red and yellow cards closer. What was there 4 yellows in the first half for dissent alone

I’d say that it’s a stretch to suggest that this was a red card. If the other defender wasn’t right next to play then it’s a definite red card, but his proximity says to me that it would be a yellow, all of course irrelevant because the idiots didn’t even deem it a foul in the first place.

Hope he has a flat tire and when he gets home finds the milkman in bed with his wife and that the kids aren’t his!

Although I am not sticking up for the referee last night. I wonder if they really need to look at the Laws of the game to assist the officials. The technicalities within each law could easily be replaced. Something along the lines of the below. Swap in or out metres for yards etc

Scrapping the throw in for a pass with the foot from the floor taken where the ball went out of play or closer to the defenders goal.

Making the penalty area smaller reducing it from 18 yards to 10 yards. With the goals being 8 yards wide the current setup means a cross that could be heading away from goal that is hand balled is punished in the same way as a hand ball 5 yards out.

Adding in 10 yard marker lines when a foul occurs, it is taken along the line behind the foul with the defenders having to be behind the line in front to be involved in the next stage of play. For example free kick awarded 38 yards out. Free kick taken on 40 yard mark with defenders being behind 30 yard.

Offside given “old school” the ball is played same second to last defender etc however if you are offside as in front of the second to last defender you are offside no phase play etc etc.

Hand ball is if the ball hits the hand only however given accidentally or on purpose. It is either yes or no

A few ideas how the game could be adapted, all the talk about recruitment AI, it is poor that even a league as well funded as the championship doesn’t have some form of AI tech for assisting decisions.

He must be 20 yards away from that too, positioning wise he was awful. Some serious fitness problems there

Not done many Championship games.

I think this shows a worrying sign for me.

There is no consistency to the level of games he's refereed.

L2, L1 and EC have all been ticked off.

It's suprised me that although the games are all the same 'Step' in the league pyramid, the difference between L2 football and EC in every way is massive.
I would have thought they would have had a EC top end L1 list of refs who get used for those games.

Unfortunately he was very poor, but the fact is, it looks like the quality of refereeing is getting worse.

Reasons for this IMO, there aren't enough referees (im not suprised with the crap they get at grass roots level) and with less numbers available, the referees that aren't as good are getting higher up the ladder.

This isn't just referees, its football in general.

Looking locally, the County Senior League used to be classed as a good standard of football several years ago, but i think its one of the lowest ranked Saturday afternoon leagues locally now.

Yeah back in the day the county senior was a very good standard. Now it’s more like Sunday league but on a Saturday.

That being said, Lord Nelson are in the Rotherham Prem on Sundays and there’s a few lads in that league who get paid on a Saturday.

Brinsworth DC are very strong. AFP usually are but they’ve had a poor start this season

Obviously you can keep upto date with the results and tables from all the local leagues (and reports from quite a few of them) at www.southyorkshiresport.co.uk each Thursday!
