Reece Brown the new whipping boy
Not first choice and therefore not as good as those we have in the team
Some on here say they hope we don't extend his contract
But I would given that we need some cover and someone who does not create problems with the squad because he is not being picked
We would need to sign other cover but would they be better, would they be fit, would they not upset the togetherness of our squad. We should be careful what we wish for
Anyway trust Wilder to get things right which is why he only gave him a contract until January and not a three year contract as our previous managers would have done

Have no issue with him getting a contract to the end of the year - provides cover at rb, centre back and defensive midfield.

That's said I don't think he could step up a league should we go up and I'm sure there are superior players we could recruit. It if wilder chooses to recruit elsewhere then that's fine by me.

A few fans who think he's probably not good enough = whipping boy!

The whole whipping boy/scapegoat thing is usually just something people want to invent. It's bullshit.

What we do with Brown depends on who we bring in. Sign a RWB and he can go, because that's currently the key position he's providing cover in. Sign no RWB and he probably stays.

I was surprised when we offered him a short term contract having seen him before he joined us - and his brief appearances for us haven't changed that. Nothing against him and I want everyone who plays for us to do well but I just don't think he is quite up to it.

Surely you have to be in the team to be a whipping boy or target
Reece Brown only 25, surely realises its hard to break into the team earning 2 points per game
his time will come

I trust wilder to make the best decision that will be to the betterment of our team ,
Anybody trying to second guess our manger at the moment , given the results and position in the league hes given to us so far , should go back and read the posts regarding him not being good enough after half a dozen games .
It's probably the same ones criticising the players now .
They have to have summat to moan about I suppose .

only 25? In his prime then

He's got pedigree, its all in the name.

Gil Reece was the first serious whipping boy I can recall at the Lane. When subs were introduced in the sixties, it seemed that Reece was always the one who copped it and was subbed. He is now recalled as a bit of a legend but believe me, he was a serious target of the boo-boys of the day.

I just assumed Brown was signed because there's no loan window and we needed cover for a couple of positions. If things had gone against us then we may have needed him. Instead he's been surplus. I haven't seen much of him but none of it's good, the Bury fans didn't rate him, and 25 isn't very young in football.

The whipping boy role is a sign of success sadly. When we're shit then the whole team and the manager get flack, when were doing "relatively" well the sharks start circling.

I give you Nick Montgomery.

Some people just don't know bow to enjoy a little success.

Them old boys on John St East would boo anybody in those days.
Blades would have to win by three goals to pacify them.

Whipping boy :D

Some people can't help themselves string up shit that doesn't actually exist.

From having seen brown warm up when he has been a sub, I couldn't understand how he was even a professional footballer.

Then I saw him play at Bolton in the FA Cup and I was pleasantly surprised, thought he played quite much better than I expected. But like the whole team that day, suspect at set pieces

That's right. I remember the man himself, snootyfenooty and Tony Wagstaff both copping dogs abuse from time to time for the cardinal sin of being a bit nesh. The thing is they were both very skilful footballers but this aspect of their play was often overlooked.

The Fenoughty Bros were 4th Division tops(sorry)
The Wagstaffs were 2nd/3rd Division

I cannot personally remember anybody on here or for that matter talking about the blades in the pub that has criticised him, simply because we have not really seen him play! Dont care too much if he goes or stays because if he goes Wilder will bring somebody else in who will be pushing immediately for starting at RWB. Where we are in January compared to last August is completely different, he can now see us possibly going up so his ideas on players will be slightly different.

Surprised to hear that, Reece looks excellent on old clips.

Depends on which clips you saw. He was inconsistent and on days when he couldn't be arsed it showed. That's why we bought Scullion.

During those first 2 or 3 years after promotion to the 1st division Reece and Scullion used to alternate depending on who was the form guy at the time.

How do you work that out? Fennoughty senior played for us in an accomplished top flight team. Fennoughty jnr hardly, if ever, played for us at all so he doesn't count. Ditto Tony Wagstaff although I was never keen on brother Barry.

And Tom Fennoughty played and scored for a winning team in a Wembley final. Go figure that one.

Good player to have around for a couple of reasons. We need cover At right back. Most importantly and his Contracts up in Jan and it was Late Aug before we signed him? I imagine he's on less than some of the kids like Reed for example Seems content to be all of the above on a short term basis. So unless we are gonna bring the back the sulking beareded one I'd offer him terms till the end of the season.

Yeah, remember those days. Scullion was a clockwork mouse. Gil was the dog's biscuits. Great in the air for a little guy and when played more centrally was much more effective. Only ever remember him having off days when shunted out more to the wing.

I know Tom and he's a top guy - but I never saw him play for us. He went to Chesterfield after us didn't he?

That's right he did.

He got his nickname snootyfenooty as he had a bachelors degree at a time when footballers, although not as thick as some of the specimens on show these days, didn't win many academic prizes.

Anyone yet for resolving the teaser as for whom he won at Wembley and scored one of the goals (without resorting to Google)?

in my minds eye Reece (Gil) always scores with a header

Matlock Town, in the FA Trophy. He was their player-manager. His brothers Nick and Mick also played for them
