Seems that Scunthorpe left back Marcus Williams turned us down and opted for Reading on the grounds they play "more attacking football"

Cant really argue with him on that one based on last seasons efforts but I hope this isnt going to be the norm or we will be playing pre season with about 10 first team players !!

For all their attacking football, they managed to finish with an inferior goal difference despite the fact our defence has been patched up/a shambles and we've not had our first choice keeper :)

If we can afford him, I'd rather have Naysmith there anyway :)

Statistically correct Foxy but it still does not alter the fact that in the recent past we have been unable to sign a clutch of players, for whatever reason. It is , at least, part of the reason why we had so many loanees in my view. If we cannot convince players that we are a decent footballing side wo are we going to attract. More of the same!. Club policy needs to change on the field of play

Which players have turned us down for football reasons?

The only ones I know of in recent years have all been down to money one way or another.

Billy Sharp :)

Joking aside most players dont state why they chose one club over another, but the fact is most of the outside world view us as not an attractive footballing side

Even a fair number of our own fans think the football is pretty turgid.

I think someone should send Mr Williams a copy of the League Table and Results of the two games between Sheffield United v Reading and just let him know that tippy tappy football gets you nowhere in this league, ask Mr Strafford.

However, when the current manager took over they were in the bottom three with 21 points from 21 games and a goal difference of -10.
So last 25 games they almost caught us up and had a goal difference of +15 (that'll be twice as good as ours).

Means nothing at the end of the day, when Hoofy gets on the blower it'll be how much he can offer in wages because if their worried about the football we play they'll be on the bench anyway.

I was once told that the reason a lot of players turn us down is because our manager can't be bothered to sit in on the interview with the player.

That was going to be my point. From the time he took the job permanently they are statistically stronger than us in every department.

Tippy tappy football seems to work okay for West Brom (and Reading in 2006 for that matter).

Where would "style of play" rank in the decision making progress for a player moving clubs?

At a guess, and in their shoes mine would probably be
Wages
Location/ Family preference/ Quality of living in area
Club potential
Style of play
Got mates there already
How I rate or otherwise the manager/players
Agent says I should.

I think all theses factors would need taking into account, though some would be more important than others

In this instance, it may well be wages were pretty much equal, no real desire one way or the other for SY or Berks, pptential of each club similar, THEN the scale tipper is style of play. Or, it's an easier thing to say than "I'm going to Reading or more money". I agree with the sentiment Railers originally expressed in that we've slid down the scale in terms of wages and potential and that getting in good players is going to be ever more difficult, but can't get too stressed out at a Scunny defender choosing somewhere else.

Off the top of my head.... Nathan Dyer.

Wasn't our offer actually turned down by the club and not the player?

If I remember correctly, we offered a cash plus player deal, where we valued Robertson at £600k.

They weren't convinced with Robertson and then he ended up having his crash.

His words when he joined Swansea were along the lines, I have joined Swansea because they're the Arsenal of the league.

I was under the assumption we'd offered to loan him longer?

Can we end this bullshit about players wanting to sign for clubs that play certain styles? They sign for;

1. Money
2. Money
3. Money
4. Assorted other excuses to make them sound like they didn't sign just for money.

He's hardly likely to say "I joined these sheep shaggers because my previous club wanted rid for the cash and there's no other acceptable offers" is he? :D

I was under the assumption we'd offered to loan him longer?

We supposedly had the deal for him perminently that I mentioned rejected, no idea if we then asked for him on a further loan.

Not while he was on loan no ;)
