The only think I can think of is that either the top 3 choices weren't available in the sense they didn't want the job when approached, which if you went by the bookies odds on was Sean Dyche and then Gary O'Neil with Steve Cooper a close 3rd.

That could have been a possibility, no idea tbh if true or not

Was it ever stated that "anything short of promotion would be a failure" is an actual target for this season? Saying it for last season, when there was a clear three horse race for a comp that paid three places would not be unreasonable, but this season once it didn't work out? Could it not be the case that Selles has been given longer term targets than just this season and the owners have accepted that the level of squad and infrastructure turnover needed to not only promote, but have a shot at sticking, is more than a one year project and this season can be said to be a "develop what we have, don't do anything really stupid" with the idea of 26/27 being where you make the push?
Average tenure for a championship club 16 months. Last season is not a desperate you must go up but the second season with parachute payments clearly is. As we know that Selles doesn’t stay in a job for long arguably unfairly then it points to a year. The fans are already divided between the anti-Selles camp of I want Wilder back because he is better (bit silly because he’s the past and we can’t yet judge better or worse. The other camp is let Selles develop his style(reasonable position to take) and other lot (I’m in this camp) if you give him the money to buy players for his system then hopefully he’ll succeed. Based on the above and the fact the board don’t at the minute to be spending money then he will be sacked within a year. I might add if by January we are clearly a mid table team that doesn’t look to trouble the top six the board will start to discuss getting rid of him (I don’t know the truth behind it but some wanted to give wilder another crack and others didn’t) the argument being you got your way and it appears not to be working. I think they should give him three windows and this was his first, his plans for this window would have been different to what (so far) he has been able to do and so his short and medium term planning is in the air,as evidenced from his recent interview. Whoever trumpeted him as the new manager needs to do deep and find sufficient money for 4/5 signings (his words). My guess is the person knows very little about football in the championship and has a misguided view that good coaches win you competitions. If he would have had an interview he would have gone through the rigorous process of his coaching and successes, what he’s learnt from his failures, what is is strategic planning using his methods, how he utilises academy players in first team squad amongst other strategic issues. I can only surmise from what has happened so far is that he has been told to do the coaching and they’ll do the rest however if he goes into press briefings and this is what is happening then he’s being a patsy. I don’t want the board to come out and explain their position but if he just said I am the head coach and others take charge of those issues then it would take a lot of pressure of him and he could get on with the job, the fans will be less divided and their ire would be directed elsewhere. For what it’s worth the players think he’s a good coach and a nice fella.

Not reading that wall of text, use paragraphs FFS, but you're not the first person I've said this to - the reason the PL gives out parachute payments is to allow you to spend WHILST IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE so that games involving promoted teams might actually be competitive, the payments on relegation then allowing a 2-3 year window to get the new high earners off the books but not forcing a fire sale. They are not interested in a relegated team having a better chance to bounce back, they are interested in newly promoted teams not being twatted every week as people will just turn off. The money is not there to spunk away trying to get back.

Very hard to do anything sat in the blaring sun in Turkey, I can barely see my phone and my screen is wet through. Sorry.

I know that to be the case, the Prince thought it was prize money for him. As for high earners off the books that had more or less taken place at the start of last season. This season we still carry an advantage with our squad but now the style of our game has changed the squad needs tweaking otherwise we’ll be twatted every other week.

Interesting stuff from the Football Governance Bill Factsheet regarding Parachute payments .....

"The Expert Committee can only include parachute payments within scope of the backstop if it determines they are relevant to the financial sustainability of the football pyramid.

In the event that they are included in scope, new requirements will ensure that relegated clubs will not risk their financial sustainability:

for a proposal to be successful, it will need to ensure that the future finances of relegated clubs are appropriately protected
parachute payments cannot be reduced within a year of the distribution order coming into effect to allow impacted clubs to plan accordingly"

The indication is that Parachute payments will be reduced or dropped completely .

Premier league closed shop becomes ever more likely ?

I believe 12 of the current Premier League clubs are now fully or part owned by Americans. To make changes to the Premier League 14 votes are required. So there is the scenario that considering American sport doesn't do relegation and promotion, as The Fox says, the closed shop could well be around a very short corner, if 2 more clubs end up with American involved ownership.
