Readings home form

Yes, but they were playing a TEAM who know exactly what they are doing. Whereas we rely on opposition mistakes or individual moments of brilliance from Illiman.
I think Reading was playing against 12 men Saturday. The 2 pens against them were dubious and they had the clearest penality claim turned down
i wish we were getting the ref decisions Boro got on Saturday

At this stage of the season most sides have something to play be it challenging for promotion or fighting off relegation. They’ll be no pushovers in any of our remaining fixtures . What we need is consistency & they only way we’re gonna get that is if Hecky doesn’t constantly chop & change the side with the constant rotating ⚔️

You know what - that is quite a good stat. If we win tonight, the 2pts gain is correct. We have only played 18 games since Carrick has been in.

When Carrick took over, Middlesbrough were 21st and 9pts behind us.

Today they are 4 points behind us but have played a game more. Win tonight and it looks better all of a sudden.

However... and there is an however...

Just 7 games ago, we were 15pts above them. This is the telling thing. CURRENT form

Depends who playing in 0000short groups of matches we played 4 of the top 8 they haven't...we played Blackburn they played Reading....not rocket science is it

A few have posted about Reading's home record. I've had a look into it and it looks like not all is as it seems. It's a decent record but it's against the bottom teams: they still have to play Burney (1st), United (2nd), Luton (5th), Millwall (7th).

They've lost three home games, against Sunderland (currently 10th), West Brom (11th) and Preston (12th) while against the top 8 sides they have played they beat Blackburn and Middlesbrough (both back in August) and Coventry (December) with a draw against Norwich (October). On the xG stats from Infogol they should have lost to Boro and Norwich with a draw against Coventry.

If we have anything left about us we should win. I'd expect that it'll be tight - only Swansea (3.18), QPR (2.21) and Watford (1.58) have got past 1.5 xG against them, while they've only hit that figure three times themselves: Stoke (2.02), Watford (1.65) and QPR (1.53).

In the last 10 games the average position of teams United have played is 12.9 (round up to 13?)
In the last 10 games the average position of teams Boro have played is 13.4 (round down to 13?)

That's the position of the clubs where the sit CURRENTLY. It's hardly Top 6 versus bottom 6 is it.

In those 10 games. Boro have achieved 7pts more than United

Why can't you just admit that Boro are flying and United are stumbling?

Hopefully a win tonight puts more daylight between us, because 4 points and level on games is a bit too close when we're currently at 1.7ppg vs. 2.4ppg

Nice table thanks.

I'm gonna flip it though and say - they're unbeaten against all teams they've faced in the top 9

I'll admit it. I'm a glass half full man, always have been. But the last 4 games have made me smash it on the floor

I don't think you can call either of Boro's penalties dubious in all honesty. The first is a clear handball and the second he's shoulder barged the player in the back.

True...but two of those were in August so closer to last Easter than today.

Agree on the last 4 games. We look a bit low on confidence and ideas and while we've got a decent squad it's stretched thin by injuries and a ludicrous recruitment process three years ago which left us with four senior left wing backs fighting for one spot in the team, five senior strikers fighting for two spots and three senior central midfielders fighting, well, for three spots. It doesn't help that Heckingbottom seems reluctant to either replace Norwood earlier in games or alter his role when he's being targeted by the opposition.

While I agree with you, wadblade has a point that the decision to not give Reading a penalty is an absolute shocker.

We both lost the same number of games in the last 18 2 points over 18 games is not better off and is not flying v stiumbling again

Last 4 we've averaged playing 8th they averaged playing 12th

You can make numbers suit certain scenarios....

Reading's home league games since Christmas for much needed context:

3-1 v Blackpool (22nd)
2-1 v Rotherham (18th)
2-2 v Watford (9th)
2-2 v QPR (20th)
2-1 v Swansea (17th)

Oddly enough if you play shit teams, your form will generally look alright
thank you, i feel better for reading that. (no pun intended)

When we went up under Basset we had a wobble at about this stage , thank god we didn’t have the internet then and all the whiney gits were moaning to themselves
it's strange, even when newcastle were hunting us down i felt much more confident than this season. even after leeds 4-0, and newcastle going 2nd i still felt we could do it, belief in the players and especially the manager. this current team and management team don't invoke the same emotions, no matter how hard i try. even when we were well clear and scored v boro, i though we're fragile, we don't believe in ourselves. i've enjoyed three promotion seasons to the top flight but for some reason this just doesn't have the feeling of one. i wish it did and i hope i'm wrong but everything just seems a bit flat and negative. yes i know i'm simply conforming to my own narrative but it just doesn't feel right to me.

And that’s why Middlesbrough are top of the league but we’re in the bottom half.

No wait… it turns out we have four more points than them having played a game less.

Weird how football fans are so negative about their own team.
I see what you did there.😉

Called it :). We won, and it was tight in both result (0-1) and xG (0.43-1.07).

so their defeat was an anomoly although theyve lost half of their away games

good logic

its not easy for any team to win all the last 12 games only burnley have earnt over 2 points per game this season
doubt very much us boro or blackburn will get over 2 per game
so is we can go 7 points clear with our game in hand it will be a massive gap to make up
yes we lost half our away games. we never won a game away under wilder this season. our 4 losses under carrick were away 2-1 preston(his first game) 3-1 burnley, 2-0 sunlan, 2-0 westbrom. we haven't drew away under carrick yet. won the rest. tbf away from home we score for fun and win quite comfortably normally.

at home under carrick we have won 6/7 with the one draw last year vs bristol. even in that game we had 32 shots i think. their keeper was like superman to stop us being 3 up in first 10min, before they scored on the break. then held on all game. we scored one second half but couldnt finish them. typical us at the time in his early games. we used to tire and rush to much, games got a bit scrappy. now we just seem to be more like carrick. just steady away cracking on doing our thing, nothing seems to phase them. even vs west brom at 2-0 down we never went direct kept on passing around trying the work good chances, no wild 30 yarders that type of thing. its probably why our shot stats look low. we try and work goals. its harder but we create better chances and conversion rate is high.

you must have missed a clear pen that the ref never game us either. we were winning 4-0 i think so never mattered. the lino also totally missed their keeper handling out of the area. which would have been a certain goal otherwise. thing is it was literally one way traffic. another hand ball by their player blocking a shot near the line was missed to. if there was var. we would have won by more than 5 imo. i think 5-0 flattered them.
