Reading 1 United 3 - report

As I understand it, there's no rule for the ball to be returned after a player goes down and it's now just players gentlemanly agreement. Normally there is a signal between the players that the ball is going to be returned. In this case, there was no signal, and if I were Stam, I'd be livid that my players had not simply played to the whistle - as someone mentioned, that's the golden rule.

Cheers for another excellent report Deadbat and so much more enjoyable to read than your previous one!

There was no signal because Reading DIDN’T play the ball out of play for treatment.
The defender had the ball near his own area, normal etiquette is to kick the ball out of touch there.
Why would the Reading player try to pass the ball up field to gain an advantage on yardage?
In future, teams could just boot the ball near the opposition corner flag, then ask to have possession given back.

Even if they did play it out to get treatment for this player then
the Reading defender is guilty of unsportsmanship trying to gain yardage.

thats the kernel of this.. they should have kicked it out over the HW line

Think you're being a bit harsh on Donaldo myself. He missed a good chance in the second half but he created the chance himself with a good change of pace.

The original directive was to stop play only for head injuries so the players can receive immediate treatment. Then of coarse the players went down like nine pins to stop the momentum of the game with the slightest clip on the leg. The refs are too weak to tell the multi millionaire footballers to get up and get on with the game. If there’s any confusion over these incidents then the players only have themselves to blame.

UTB !

When I were a lad.......It was an accepted part of the game that the ball would be kicked out and returned to the opposition to allow treatment to an injured player. Back in the day when players were really hurt, not fucking pretending like in 99% of incidents now. Before the diving epidemic we are now trapped within, it was a true act of gentlemanly conduct; unfortunately something else football has lost.

I’ve only seen the highlights, but was it clearly obvious that reading had kicked it out because everyone of an injury to their player?

That’s their problem. The FA and FL say it is for the referee to decide when to stop play for injuries, not players.

If you put the ball out for an injured opponent, fair play demands it be returned to you but for your own player? No chance. Too readily abused. Play on normally.

And if the goal went against United? :D

It needs a change of attitude and expectation at all clubs. If you choose to put a ball out of play for an injury to your own team, contrary to the policy laid down by the governing bodies, why on earth should the game not proceed as normal?

Great report DB, a very thorough match analysis, I dont know how you remember all the detail.

What feed were you watching the match on? I was trying to find a stream etc for about an hour. Saw that someone suggested facebook but i couldnt find anything (despite being on facebook but never using it)

Maybe you or someone could provide me a link?

Cheers in advance

I think your rating is a bit flattering to Basham. His passing was poor as usual, he gave away a free kick and a penalty. Can’t fault his commitment but his limitations were exposed by a very poor team.
You really hate Basham don't you, every chance you get on every thread your there slagging him off. Thank God Wilder knows more about football than you and realises he's a key part of his team.
