As I understand it, there's no rule for the ball to be returned after a player goes down and it's now just players gentlemanly agreement. Normally there is a signal between the players that the ball is going to be returned. In this case, there was no signal, and if I were Stam, I'd be livid that my players had not simply played to the whistle - as someone mentioned, that's the golden rule.

There was no signal because Reading DIDN’T play the ball out of play for treatment.
The defender had the ball near his own area, normal etiquette is to kick the ball out of touch there.
Why would the Reading player try to pass the ball up field to gain an advantage on yardage?
In future, teams could just boot the ball near the opposition corner flag, then ask to have possession given back.
Even if they did play it out to get treatment for this player then
the Reading defender is guilty of unsportsmanship trying to gain yardage.
