Randomly bumping into Blades players

Bumped into Ched Evans at Cheshire Oaks retail park a couple of weeks ago. He was with his Mrs and photo took with him. Asked him when he was coming back and he said he had a few phone calls to make. Said he was gutted when he was forced away from club after his release.

Did you tell him we were also gutted that he acted like a prick and was one of the main causes we missed out on promotion that year.

He's a Blade!

Palin blows with the fucking wind . He has no idea who he supports . Bet has no idea who plays in red and white and who plays in blue and white .

Ok he could have a Egg Head moment and guess 50 50.

Besides that a decent nice chap , but knows nowt about football.

Is it true that translated Tebily is French for Bombscare ?
Don't know but I suspect we'll find out in a week or so if loads of gendarmes are running around shouting 'Tebily'.

I think he spent a lot of his childhood at boarding schools so probably felt affinity with anything Sheffield related. We didn't have the arts and culture we have now that raised Sheffield's profile, just Joe Cocker. No Human League, Def Lep, Heaven 17, ABC, Arctic Monkeys, Warp etc that we all take for granted these days. We didn't even have a venue for big bands in those days. I was only a kid in the seventies and probably wasn't born when he went to school but I have the impression that in the past a lot of southerners didn't even know where Sheffield was, just up North somewhere.

I think that's still the case with a lot of Southerners ....Northern Powerhouse, my arse!:p

Depends. I've been called a southerner by Geordies.

I should hope so, being in Shepherds Bush and all :rolleyes:

It's is relative isn't it. I used to have to drive up to Doxford (near Sunderland) for work meetings and the first time I did on the way back I saw a sign on eithe the A19 or A1 which said "The South and Darlington" one of the most depressing moments of my life that was!

But then I'm a proper Southerner me, if I didn't support United I'd probably have no idea Sheffield even existed. :p

I live in Bush. Moved up from Brighton. Before that, in and around Sheffield all my life. I pronounce words like bath and laugh properly. ;)

Nothing so true as your post Bush . I remember in the late 70s being invited to a party in Richmond at which a load of luvvies were there who took the piss out of my accent and thought we all had flat caps and whippets .

Thought Sheffield was down the road from Newcastle.

A very famous actress walked me to the patio doors and said to me - soak up the view of Richmond Downs / Park ( whatever it was ) , I bet you have never seen country views and landscape like that before .

The women had no fucking idea we live on the Peak District border.

So yes agree , and Sheffield by certain Londoners is still classed as up North somewhere . Sad.

Palin and his kind have opened people's eyes , and hats off to him .

UTB.

When I was 11 or 12 Emlyn Hughes pushed me out of the queue to get in the south stand for a reserve match.
Saved him at least 10 seconds.
Tosspot.

Speaking of tosspots. 20 years ago we played a charity match against Johnny quinns all stars. Good set of lads bar 1, which was Lawrie madden. I was a 16 year old lad at the time in aww of all the opposition. (Included Emlyn hughes). Anyhow, Lawrie madden was the Biggest mardy twat I have ever played against. I reckon he thought it was the fa cup final with the way he was mouthing And acting. What a complete bell end who showed no respect for the occasion which was played in memory of a child who sadly lost their life.

Wow! Really? How can we best harness that?

Something about a zillion quid on a railway line that will make it 10 minutes quicker to get to London?

You just know the question we are all thinking about asking related to this, though, don't you? ;)

Charlotte Rampling of Night Porter film fame. Not many will know her I suppose. Good looking lass when younger.

She was a '10'. Was married to Jean Michel Jarre.

Speaking of 70s actresses, I sometimes see Rula Lenska in Chiswick.

I know someone who knows Cressy. Did his lads used to play in same team as Jonothan Greening's kids? This may have been a few years ago btw so ignore if im talking drivel....
Jonathon Greening seems to know Cressy, so maybe. He is seen around York but always wears a cap and hides his face, I last saw him at a kids footie tournament so his kids must play for one of the York league teams.
Cressy's oldest lad is in the Leeds academy so doesn't play in the York league but Cressy used to do some of the coaching last season for my lads team.

In chronological order:

Early 80's - as a kid I regularly saw Keith Edwards in Graves' Park; he would always exchange a few passes with you as he walked by.

Late 80's/90's - used to drink in Players' Lounge after matches, me mates dad ran the bar, so used to get us in. This was the start of the Bassett era and the atmosphere in there changed noticeably as the old guard (Stancliffe, Todd, Duffield etc) were gradually replaced with southerners. I remember Vinnie Jones' home debut, and his particularly shiny grey suite. Paul Beesley resembled Mr Bean when he first signed for us, but I think his wife must have very quickly spent his new found fortune on smartening him up. Wally Downes is a tosser.

2003 - Turned up at a Mr Cryan's house (at Catcliffe) to mend his dishwasher, walked in to see Colin Cryan and Nick Montgomery sat at the kitchen table. 03/04 pre-season had just started, but it was all a bit subdued because it was only a few weeks after we'd lost the Wolves play-off final.

About 8 years ago turned up for my usual kick boxing session only to be introduced to my training partner for the day, former Blades full-back Cliff Powell. We're about the same height but he must've weighed about 4 stone heavier than me!!! It was like Bomber Graham trying to fight Frank Bruno!!

Just clearing out some old books and before 'Michael Palin Diaries 1969-1979' goes to the charity shop, I thought I'd quote him for posterity and clarity:

pg. 135, "(Chelsea) were playing Sheffield United, and although they were unlikely to be classy opponents, at least I could see my team in action"

pg. 524, footnote, "Some readers may find it confusing that I appear to support both Sheffield football teams (a crime punishable by disembowelment in Sheffield itself). Living in London I'm always glad to hear of any Sheffield success. When I lived in Sheffield I was always a United fan, so that's what I've had to settle for."
.
Now, where can I get that Nokia ring tone ? :)

Just got back to the office after lunch to see Ryan France at financial adviser graduation ceremony (City of London). Random.

And yes, I realise I am stretching the term 'Blades player'...

Since I posted this, when we were playing Fleetwood away I was behind Keith Edwards in the queue at the chippy. I reminisced about his classic goal against Bristol Rovers. I got the impression I wasn't the first..

Once saw Kevin McDonald on a night out in Barnsley.

I went up to him and said, "Are you Kevin McDonald?". He said, "No" and then walked off.

Ha-ha! That tells you what he thought of fans coming up to him in the street then.

Why would anyone do that anyhow? Seeing a footballer in the street and going up to them and trying to make conversation? I can understand little children being in awe of their hero's and wanting to do that, maybe get an autograph, or as is more likely the case these days, a photo, but no, I cannot understand a grown up doing that.

I wouldn't treat a footballer any different to any other person. If circumstances meant that we got into conversation about something or other, fine. But to go up to someone who is a complete stranger and start trying to make a conversation with them, just because of the job they do, is not something that would ever cross my mind. In fact, I think it would be totally embarrassing for both parties.

Oh dear I am just an embarrassment :( Not for the first time I suspect.
