So you can take the piss out off me, it seems... Then again, Premier League is supposed to be the no. 1. league in the world, so I guess I'm left a bit bewildered about you asking as to just why? (As you did.)

Who's taking the piss?
I'm genuinely intrigued as to why you compare Ramsdale to 'world-class' keepers (and also who you put in that world-class bracket)

How many world class keepers are there in the Premier League? De Gea, Allison, Ederson, Patricio?

They're not very common even in the number 1 league in the world.

Best just kick it to their team then hadnt we.
Sure mate, that's what I intended. (No, I didn't - there's this thing called sarcasm that I hope your pals might one day be able to tell and teach you more about.) Ah Christ, it's just not such a black or white situation here, compared to just what you seem to be suggesting. We better buy a proper forward, and let Ramsdale kick the ball to him. Does that sound like a bad idea?

You're right. I probably didn't choose my words as carefully as I did, nor should've I backed them up in a later post. Would a "proper PL keeper" be okay with you?

No mate, you seem to get a reply suggesting a positive, and you whine on and turn it into a negative.

As for sarcasm, maybe i need it explaining, maybe you responded to a sarcastic post. Ill ask my pals.

I would argue one full season in the premier league culminating in relegation is unproven for the level we want to be at.
So what were your thoughts going into last season with a goalkeeper with zero premier league experience? I would argue Ramsdale has far more top level experience than Deano had a year ago.
Try looking for a different scapegoat. There were players who turned in poorer performances last night but the fact remains we are 1 game in. Absolutely no need for panic or judgement just yet

Good post, and the point about the saves made is important.

If he had saved the first 2 Wolves chances, they could have just as easily scored a couple more later on. Or he could have fluffed the lot and we might have lost 4-0.

We all need to get over Henderson. He was instrumental in 2 promotions, but far from the sole reason that we achieved them. He also had a few errors in him, and at times was (frankly) gash at defending his near post.

Ramsdale will be fine. It's the goals scored column that we need to focus on.
One promotion.

Just editing my own post due to the obvious brainfart. WTF was I drinking last night?
Not sure mate but judging by some of the ridiculous finger pointing, scapegoat hunting posts on this thread their were plenty who must have been pissed up early doors last night!
Lightweight 😉

I really hope this isn't going to be a consistent theme all season with fans crying about the drop off in quality from Henderson to Ramsdale.

Yes, there is going to be a difference. Henderson is one of the leagues best goalkeepers, we couldn't afford him. Let's get over that one quickly. Ramsdale will be solid, but unlikely to be spectacular.

He didn't make any horrendous errors tonight and pulled off a couple of decent saves. Let's just get behind the lad.
One thing‘s for sure if it is going to be a constant theme, it’ll do him no good, it’ll do the team no good and ultimately do the club’s fortune’s no good.

I love that he's a fan, and I wish Ramsdale all the very best - tough act to follow in Henderson.

But, and you can all pile in and tell me how wrong I am, if I'd had £18 million odd to spend on a keeper, I'd have been tempted by Martinez. Looked really good for Arsenal after Leno got injured, six foot five, and still got plenty of time in his career - I think he's 28.

He’s our goalie now ..will have competition for his place ...and let’s leave it a that ....pointless comparison to Henderson ..as he is £50 million pound goalkeeper ...and we could never afford him...

Kepa at Chelsea cost £72 million ffs ...Ramsdale will do ok

Nice to see some have got their scapegoat nice and early this season. He was not at fault for the second goal. The issue with the second goal is the free header. Better defending stops that goal, not rambo.

It's one game, we grew as it went on and we don't have all players fully fit yet. We will be fine.

It's nice to see that as usual some posters want to close down genuine discussions about players that play for OUR team and using the typical excuse of scapegoat.

Sometimes it's not about individuals, it's about what is good for the team and a few (for now) are expressing concern about the new goalkeeper - it isn't a crime.

He's hardly played though, is it worth the risk? A fairly long career spent on the bench/cup keeper and getting loaned out to the lower leagues and a 10 or so game hot streak (which also coincided with getting a manager who can organise a defence). He's still somewhat of an unknown.

If he does as well wherever he ends up then fair play, but if it turns out he's just an average keeper who was having a purple patch, that's a lot of money down the drain.

We've not paid £18m for Ramsdale either, more like £10m and his wages will be less.

Henderson let 5 goals in in his first 2 games for us, but he turned out alright in the end.

Concern is fine if it's warranted, I believe it's not in this case, the issues with both goals were not caused by Rambo. Lunny should have taken the man out for the first goal. The defending from set pieces was woeful all game including the free header for the second. Henderson wouldn't have saved either goal in my opinion and if it was him who made the save in the second half people would be setting themselves about how he kept us in the game.

It seems like any player we've spent large money on has been slated instantly by some fans if they're not balloon d'Or contenders five minutes into their debut. Mcburnie, berge and now ramsdale seem to have fallen foul of this (not accusing you of doing this).

We'd be wise not to be quick to jump on a goal keepers back, Steve Simonson and George long are good examples of what happens when we get on their backs...karius being another good example.

The interest with some was his form with Bournemouth and his goal keeping standards there which may be materialising here. I believe the jury is out with more than this forum thinks and some are keeping their powder dry whereas others are trying to post constructive reasons. My feeling is Darren Ward has a lot of work to do.

You have of course picked on three goalkeepers who warrant serious questions asked of their abilities - all three are way below or behind Ramsdale.

As for Berge, I was questioning certain aspects also - what he is, is a fantastic passer of a footballer - the weight of pass is quite remarkable for one so young. I believe what some questioned was his lazy style which simply won't wash in the premier league and his ability to actually last for 90 mins (when he first came). What that seems to highlight is the vast difference between Belgium football (which included Champions League games) and the Premier league. It was a difference some hadn't seen before due to our lack of having foreign players.

As for McB - the attention he gets is due to his style of play and has been picked up on by many fans of other clubs. The Question to ask here is: are they all wrong? For me, I am not sure we know how to use him correctly - Swansea provided him with a lot of tap in type goals due to their very attack minded and wide forwards. We seem to want to lump balls to him, which he may win, but we are too deep to support the that style which is disappointing me and in a way shows McB for being a poor, struggling footballer which some fans jump on.

It seems for some on here with any new player it's got nothing to do with how good he could become for us, it's all about how much did he cost.
He's played one game for us and some on here already have the knives out ready to pounce.
Give the lad your support and a chance to settle in, you may be surprised what a difference it could make...... ;) 🙊

Hendo seems to be getting even better now that he is gone. He made lots of mistakes last year. I can think of at least 6 off of the top of my head. It wasn't a case of swapping Hendo for Rambo, we simply couldn't afford him, even if his club were willing to loan him out again

I agree he looked a bit stiff, ponderous and lacking in agility but he’s here now, he’s our first choice keeper and should be judged on his performances over a bigger test sample than one game?

I‘d prefer us to focus all our attention on the opposite end of the pitch, which is an area of greater concern and one that we can still improve upon before the window closes.
I saw an interview with Ramsdale post match.
Feel for him really.
Lets not allow frustration to turn us against him.
Need to build his confidence right up.

He's a young goalkeeper who of course still got lots of learning to do. I just feel there's a knee jerk reaction being made at times with the more expensive players. I get that with the price tag that the expectations are higher but 20m today isn't a lot.

Another point I've seen is the couple of late dives he made in the game when the ball had passed. If that was Henderson he'd have been lauded for his shit housing by some. The comparison to Henderson is going to be made and that's fine, but don't crucify the boy for not being the exact same player. I also think people need to realise we are likely to concede much more this season if post lockdown displays continue. A big plus over Henderson is that ramsdale's kicking is already much better.

The reference to the three keepers wasn't in regards to ability, more the fact how fans turned on them, shredded their confidence and the team and player suffered as a result. Most were happy when we signed Simonson after the loan, me included, and we know how that turned out. One example that always infuriated me was when wilder first came in, long parried a shot and the opposition scored the the rebound. Boo's rang loud to the mistake. Moore is then signed and does the same on his debut, absolute silence. Fans had made their mind up and decided to destroy long instead of supporting him.

Berge will be great for us I've no doubt! Has all the attributes and looked good when he came on, would've started if not for the niggle picked up on international duty.

Mcburnie has better ability with the ball at his feet then most think... Does have the ability to play he didzy role to some extent and has way better finishing.

Our crossing needs to improve.. 43 crosses against wolves I believe and over 10 corners. 1 decent header off the line to show for all that.

He didn’t have a bad game in fact Hendo had worse games especially after the restart. I do wonder if those quick to criticise would think it acceptable if the same happened to them or a family member on their first day on a new job? Everybody takes time to adjust and settle in whatever job they do. First day nerves and getting used to new teammates are always going to be a factor especially with a goalkeeper because it’s such an unforgiving position, but if there is any blame for that defeat it lies with Lundstram and O’Connell, they made clear mistakes. Nobody can be certain that Henderson or any other keeper would have saved those shots.

Not only is this unfair, it’s putting Hendo on an unnecessary pedestal and giving Rammers absolutely no honeymoon period with his new team.

I liked Henderson and he definitely came out well in credit but he wasn’t without fault and there were goals that were not attributed to him that he could have done better on.

So if we are going to be super critical to Rammers from the off, have a relook at the goals we conceded:

Leicester - Good strike from Vardy, but keepers shouldn’t be conceding at the near post.
Chelsea - cost us the second goal by dropping a routine catch.
Liverpool - absolute howler cost us a point in a really hard fought performance.
Newcastle home - just like yesterday, not the prime culprit but hardly made any effort and didn’t play to the whistle on their second.
Newcastle away - terrible error by Enda but another at the near post.
Southampton - another near post, this time from Jug ears.
Arsenal cup - got us knocked out by coming out at the wrong angle with defenders on the line and getting done near post once more.

He was brilliant for us. I mean to take nothing away from that. But we were behind him and he came through all of the above with total support. We should be giving the same to Ramsdale too.
Exactly 👍🏻⚔️

Our crossing needs to improve..

I've picked out that item specifically because it has driven me bonkers for a few years now.

We got behind Wolves in the 2nd half numerous times, but as is usual, numerous times we waste opportunities in the box - now that is against the players with the ball AND our forwards and LACK of midfield players giving the player on the ball an option. It doesn't seem natural for some of our players which is very disappointing.

Whilst the fella I will mention next is a legend to us, Basham - his crossing is abysmal - far worse than Baldock, Stevens and JOC. It's been going on for years and as a team we simply cannot afford all our good approach play, and to be fair we have got better in the last 18 yards over the pat couple of years, but still our crossing is shocking.

Not sure what the coaches say here - for me, the cardinal sin is not beating the first man - i'd much rather they practice over hitting than under hitting, especially when there are a few milling around the box or penalty area.

CWAK must pull their hair out at times with how good we get to the 18 yard box and then mess it all up with a poor final ball. For now, i'd like to see Berge/Norwood and Fleck chucking balls in to the box - they are all decent at balls in and I don't buy this "drop Norwood for Berge" - we just need to use their quality better.

UTB

Agreed... The left side isn't as bad as the right for abysmal crossing. I wanted us to sign a rwb last season to provide a better outlet crossing wise. Bogle has lots of assists already in his first two seasons.. hopefully he's the answer to that problem.

Quite frankly I've never seen someone as good as Norwood when it comes to long range passing! Makes it look easy!

I have noticed we tend to lay it off to Norwood/ berge/ lunny a lot more for them to whip it in.

Anyways to avoid it drifting further off topic. Let's give rambo a chance and I'm sure he'll prove his worth 👍
