Rail Strike Saturday

Thanks for the info, although as the RMT have been needlessly striking for all of the last five Saturdays as well as the next two after tomorrow, anyone using the trains will probably have noticed already

Do you actually know why this action is being taken? If not Google it then look at today's report about the levels of violence and sexual assault on trains then come back to me as to why having no guard on a train is a clever idea on any level.

Northern rail Saturday strikes were extended to all of October and I hear will likely stretch into November too, to start to get some Christmas shopping impact.

If you think that a guard right now is going to do anything different than whatever non driving staff would be called in the future in the situations you describe (i.e. fuck all, hide in cab, alert BTP) you're deluded, this is purely down to the RMT completely refusing to accept the rail network being dragged into the 21st century, refusing to accept reasonable deals, refusing to discuss alternatives and hoping that we'll go back to the days where we've got someone waving a red flag in front of all trains, as long as they're paying them subs. This is General Blades Chat so I'm leaving that there

Happy to give you a like on the basis you may know more than me. Having said that, I know that is why Southern Rail are striking, but I had a suspicion that the northern strikes were for less altruistic reasons. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Northern action is purely to keep the guard on the train and nothing else. I am a proud RMT member and trust me the guards function is a very important one despite the disparaging comments posted. I am not an advocate of industrial action taken lightly. This is a just reason. The lads and lasses at Northern are losing a lot of money sticking at this. The RMT is helping them financially and we in other areas of work are helping with donations. The railway has an incredibly dedicated and skillfull workforce dealing with antiquated infrastructure and the greed of the TOCS. I am proud to be part of the industry.

Not that I use the trains an awful lot but what are the main motives for the strike and what are the aims? As in what’s the main argument for keeping guards etc. Would be nice to hear from the horses mouth rather than some nonsense spouted on BBC twitter page.

The main role of a guard is to open and close the doors, sell tickets, deal with passengers and offer assistance to any one who needs it, they are god sends for the elderly, disabled and people who need them, and on the face of it is a pretty easy job........until something goes wrong, and if it goes go wrong it has the scope to go wrong very quickly and with disasterous consequences,

Guards are fully trained up with a full understanding of all the operational procedures in accordance to what is known as the rule book, fully trained up and know exactly what to do in an emergency and in every eventuality. (If a train is derailed and the driver incapacitated, if there is no guard who is going to know how to stop the train that is heading towards the detailed train at 100 mph)

I’ve got not far off 20 years working on the railway, I’ve done a lot of different jobs on there, including working both as a guard and a driver, I know exactly what the value of a guard is. The removal of the guard quite simply compromises operational safety, and does so in a way that to my own mind that personally it isn’t just my own opinion but it is a widely held belief across all grades in the Railway industry that driver only operated trains are inherently a lot less safe than a train with a guard on it, and quite simply the only reason there is such a clamour to remove guards is because of a government, and a government minister who is determined to put profit before safety.

These series of strikes have got wide scale public backing, the Rail Unions would get absolutely fucking slaughtered if these strikes were about pay or terms and conditions, but it is a strike about safety, and the majority of people who have been affected by these strikes are backing the strikes, because simply they want to travel on a train that is a lot safer by having guards on them.

Whilst I don’t have particularly strong feelings on this issue as I don’t use trains, what is true is that money is always put before people these days. Having very elderly parents (95 & 89) I am fully aware that virtually every system we come into contact with is about saving money and not about caring for or helping people!

I hope that you never get taken ill on a train without a guard.
 
It looks like no or very few trains between six and nine pm. There is only a couple of trains for our Jack to get back to Leeds and our Helen to get to Manchester. Hope there's not too much time added on.

Basically, the driver drives the train but the guard is the person in charge of it and as explained by brownie, is a fully trained professional person.
