Assuming deadbat has slit his wrists with depression, here's a quick summary for those lucky souls who didn't bother going yesterday.

At half two, both teams were on the pitch carrying out warm-up routines and generally pretending they knew what they were doing. George Long impressed, palming away a number of well-struck shots. Forte also looked up for it. Unfortunately, this warm-up session proved too much for him and he managed to injure himself and miss the match. To quote Phoenix Nights, 'send the bugger back'.

Kick off time loomed with the sun shining, a decent following from Preston, hope in the air, and then...

...the match kicked off.

Now, both teams tried. They really did. Unfortunately it wasn't good enough to entertain serious prospects as full-time, professional footballers. The first half passed without a serious effort from either team.

As ever, the visiting side realised at half time that 3 points were there for the taking. Preston buzzed around the United goal, hit the bar from a free-kick and forced Long into a great save. Kitson continued his parody of a fading footballer, the ref. continued to be over fussy and the tedium drifted to an inevitable 0 - 0.

Oh! I'm forgetting the real moments of excitement! Some Preston fans - obviously out on Community Support - let off a couple of loud bangy things and a smoke bomb.

Once again, a team that has spent much of the season scuffling around near the bottom of the table proved more than enough to hold United. This has happened with too many similar teams - Portsmouth, Stevenage (3 wins in the last 18, and they thumped us), Crewe etc. etc.

I can see us being nearer the bottom half than the top next season. Long will be sold (possibly to Newcastle as Krul is rumoured to be on his way). He's not ready for immediate PL action but will be well worth the £1m (rising to half-a-million with no sell-on clause) and they'll probably loan him out for a season. To us? Don't make me laugh. They'll want him to develop and improve.

Onwards and downwards...
