Quality Players!

Don't know about anyone else but this term is starting to really grate on me!

1. Wednesday fans used to use it when debating how Chansri would lavish his Billions upon them with loads of 'Quality Players'!
2. Thus to me, it has connotations of players who are really expensive!
3. Accordingly, Wednesday fans and Pundits don't think that we have any!
4. Its a lazy way of saying that payers are good, without any detail or specifying why.
5. In a tight fought 0 - 0 game,bleeding commentators always use the line that there is a lack of 'Quality'. What about all the 'Quality' defending going on?
6. Seemingly the term 'Quality Player' only refers to attacking players, anyone who plays for the top six, Jack Grealish or Virgil Van Dike!
7. My Wednesday supporting mates are now squealing about all of the new 'Quality Players' they are now about to sign with their 60 Million ground sale.
8. It tarnishes John Motson's original quote 'A quality goal from a quality player'!
9. It is a term used too often to refer to players who are decent but nowhere near as good as Tony Currie.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the word "quality" - it signifies a set of characteristics or attributes that a player has - and it's often used in a comparative sense. So when a club talks about recruiting "quality" players (like we are talking about now) it means recruiting players who have greater attributes than the ones we currently have at our disposal. Which is what we are trying to do - and what we need to do.

As much as I understand your comparison with Tony Currie, I don't think there's any copyright preventing us from talking about other "quality" players. It doesn't besmirch TC in any way - it just states things as they are.

You are making the connection with "cost", because we usually have to pay more for quality. But the cost of something and whether it is "expensive" depends on how you calculate or perceive it's value? I pay £300 for a pair of shoes. My mate thinks I'm mad. He pays maybe a third of that. His shoes last him 6 months, mine have lasted me 6 years. He thinks my shoes are expensive. I think his shoes are even more expensive. I can't afford to buy cheap shoes like his! Which one of us is right?

TBF, you often hear CW say "We lacked a bit of quality when it mattered" or something like that when we've failed to score. Everton at home was the most recent example.

I guess he means a player who can see and execute that telling pass that will take out a defence, get past a player or get a yard and put a great ball in the box or a bit of finishing composure in the box.

However I don't think price tag necessarily guarantees this.

I would say the bloke who goes to Brantano and gets shoes for £30 which look better and last longer than the £300 shoes. Quality and cost are as you have correctly pointed our, not the same. This is the bit my Wednesday supporting mates seem to struggle with most. TC was a quality player. According to my mates Barry Bannon is a quality player! Ahhhhhhh!
