In the kit thread someone mentioned that they would've preferred white socks on the new kit. I have always thought that Black Shorts/White Socks were the best combination. A friend of mine suggested that we always get relegated in white shorts. So i checked.

The following is all kits that we have been relegated wearing (since WWII) followed by all the kits we've been promoted wearing. It's quite interesting to see that it's the white socks which seem to be relegation fodder. Twice we've gone down with White shorts. And in terms of promotions, we've NEVER been promoted in White Shorts (i guess the closest was in 2003).

We've also done pretty well in red socks.

I thought that was an interesting 10mins anyway..

Where's the 1892-93 promotion kit? ;)

So to summarise, we need to stay well away from red & white stripes, and instead try to go for some sort of white & red stripped concoction instead...

If you remove all of the stripes bar one and then increase the lone stripes size to make up the entire shirt is it still a stripe?

For me it's all about the shirts. The only time we have sunk to the 4th tier we were wearing a very non Blade unstripey shirt, can't imagine what they were thinking about. Although I first watched the Blades in white socks I am prepared to be persuaded about the value of black. Definitely like the new kit.

That's wrong. We were relegated in 94 with the Umbro shirt that had thin red and white stripes and black horizontal band across the middle and relegated in 2007 with the le coq sportif kit with capital one as sponsor.

We wore the lace up shirt in both seasons in the Premier League. Here's a picture of the shirt launch complete with Football League sleeve patches:

And here is the footage of the final day of the 1994 season:
