Pressure building on finishing the season now?

Our Culture Secretary is currently supporting a return as soon as possible, so what’s happening in France is irrelevant.

Those determined to cancel/delay the restart of this season appear to be the clubs with the most to gain by no relegation. It’s nothing to do with supporting the NHS, saving tests for key workers or worries about fan gatherings, it’s purely down to looking out for their best interests.

My biggest concern is the proximity of West Ham to relegation, we've already witnessed the clout they have with the league whether it is as strong today as it was remains to be seen. The French and Dutch leagues throwing it all in give them an excuse.

As disappointing as it would be to not finish it, on the upside if they did, I cant think of any way they can end the season without us finishing in a Europa League spot. Fairly sure theres no chance of Champions League, but every idea, plan and model supposedly “being considered” has us getting a Europa spot.

The only way they can rob us of that is by completely voiding the season all together, which they wont because that would also mean shafting Liverpool.

But our culture secretary is a tory who will say whatever it takes to curry favour. Especially with the working classes. Doesn't mean it's going to be possible. If we don't have enough supplies for the NHS requirements (testing kits, protective equipment etc) , they won't and should't be wasted on football.

Has anyone worked out how the table would look if they took the first game against each opponent (so, 19 games each)?

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen that and again, it has us up in 5th or 6th. Don't quote me on it though; I’ve read that many potential scenarios and formulas on this they all seem to melt into one.

It's not just France though YB.
After Holland, France might just be the start of a number of countries following their lead.
A couple more do it and, I think that would tip the balance for us too.

Agree with this.....it would be a dissapointment missing out on the Champions league but I’d settle for Europa Cup football.
Also don’t think they will void the whole season when it’s more than 75% complete.

I agree, what is happening elsewhere in Europe can't be completely ignored, but our league is a different case to every other league.

The "best league in the world" might be marketing bollocks by Sky, but when it comes to money, the Premier League is certainly the most lucrative. Are the UK government going to allow another league such as La Liga, Serie A or Bundesliga to complete their seasons and overtake the Premier League in terms of global popularity? If the risks are low enough, the government are going to kill the goose that lays the gold egg.

As the below news story confirms, the Premier League is huge for the UK economy, I'm sure a few tests and PPE is worth it when the money generated by the Premier League can help fund the NHS long term.

Sounds like we're pretty much guaranteed Europa League next season if this one is abandoned.

As much as I'd prefer the season to be played out either way, we'd be more likely to miss out on Europe all together than qualify for the Champions League.

Have a feeling that domestic results may be null and void other than for European purposes. Based on nothing other than a hunch but that seems to be the way it’s going. Hope I’m wrong.

It will be just our luck if we make Europe but cant travel to watch the RAWW !

Never a truer word ... can't see the authorities around Europe wanting 100s/1000s of football fans jetting around the continent while coronavirus is still prevalent. Unless they find a cure for it I can see it affecting next seasons competitions too. At best I'd say they'd be looking at a scaled down version of the Europa League, perhaps a regionalised knock out tournament behind closed doors and live on TV.

I hear the French are toying with the idea of finishing it at half way. Is it true that the pigs were 3rd ?

In France they are discussing three possible scenarios...

1. Base the final standings on a points-per-game average

2. Finalise the table on the last full round of games played - 27 in the case of Ligue 1

3. Take the standings as they were after 19 matches, the halfway point of the season

I dont mind finishing the season so long as its not voided

but

there's still a window of opportunity for us Germany and Spain to finish
