When I think of West Ham I always think of the smash and grab they did on us in the 89/90 season. How many of there fans still have a mask?
Only mentioned it to my eldest today! Think it was the first game with seats on our Kop too !When I think of West Ham I always think of the smash and grab they did on us in the 89/90 season.
I might have dreamt this but we had something like 28 corners in the game, and about 23 in one half, and got beat 2v0 with goals on the break. Somebody will correct and confirm the actual number of corners I hope.
Is that 28 still the highest number, wow?!Yes - it was 28 and we lost 2-0. Both goals were scored by a player called Ward. I thought one was a penalty but both were breakaway attacks.
28 is the highest number of corners in an English professional football match. I have an impression that we played Dynamo Kiev at Bramall Lane shortly after and we got 20+ corners in that game and we lost that too - 2-1 I think. But maybe that was a dream or rather a nightmare. Perhaps somebody can confirm that?
I believe the second highest number of corners in an English professional football match was 22 and involved Southampton v Forest (I think). Soton lost 2-1. Again perhaps somebody can confirm that?
Moral of the story? As we know it’s goals that count not pressure….

39 year old Phil Parkes in goal for West Ham. Julian Dick's penalty hit the bar and the rebound reached almost the halfway line before a player touched the ball.Yes - it was 28 and we lost 2-0. Probably 1-1 draw 91/2 first home game with seats then! Opponents West Ham!I dont think it was first game with seats on the Kop.
That whole Bassett promotion season was standing on the top.
Last game with standing kop was the roof less game against Norwich following season
More or less how I remember itWhen I think of West Ham I always think of the smash and grab they did on us in the 89/90 season.

Wasnt Lenny Henry one of the Linesmen ?When I think of West Ham I always think of the smash and grab they did on us in the 89/90 season.

That's not funny. But there again, neither is Lenny Henry.Wasnt Lenny Henry one of the Linesmen ?

If I am right and we had 20+ of those in one half then that's going to take some beating.
Both goals were scored by a player called Ward.
Wasn't the first game with seats on the Kop a bit later, maybe the following season, and I thought it was an early season night game v West Ham but might be wrong on both fronts!Only mentioned it to my eldest today! Think it was the first game with seats on our Kop too !
26 in one half will probably never be beaten, waiting for somebody to tell me it already has been beaten! It was 28 corners in total and, incredibly, 26 in the second half. We had some big lads - Stancliffe, Deane, Booker etc., so God knows how we didn’t score any of them.
Sorry just seen this has been clarified already.Wasn't the first game with seats on the Kop a bit later, maybe the following season, and I thought it was an early season night game v West Ham but might be wrong on both fronts!
If there's anyone who knows how to get out of the Championship with parachute payments, it's Lady Penelope's driver.Looks like parker might be there new manager
Ward flagged Bassetts tactics off after the game and became a hate figure. Many laughed when he got sent down.Yes - it was 28 and we lost 2-0. Both goals were scored by a player called Ward. I thought one was a penalty but both were breakaway attacks.

I believe our right back had an absolute nightmare that game. Don't know what became of him.If I remember correctly, despite all the corners West Ham were still the better side that day. They also thrashed us at Upton Park later on in the season.
I remember it now. I was stood on the John Street East terrace as a 15 year old kid.Probably 1-1 draw 91/2 first home game with seats then! Opponents West Ham!
Was it Rod Stewart?I remember it now. I was stood on the John Street East terrace as a 15 year old kid.
I remember it well as some guy was on the kop, and he came into the ground with some leggy blonde in the shortest, tightest, denim shorts I'd ever seen. Well it seemed that way from where I was stood!![]()
More like Moira Stuart! Was it Rod Stewart?
