In 1962 the Inter Cities Fairs Cup committee wanted Wendy (who finished 6th) and Birmingham (who finished 20th) in the 1962-63 Fairs Cup competition instead of Burnley (who finished 2nd) and the Blades (5th). As soon as football isn't decided on merit and ability on the pitch then there really isn't much point. I know that having a lot of money has an influence on this, but its fantastic that at the moment we are bucking the trend. I remember a few years ago Phil Gartside wanting to turn the Premier League into a franchise by doing away with relegation and promotion. Meanwhile rumors abound over the not too distant creation of a European League in which only the select few will be invited. Over the past few weeks I've heard from pundits (not Leeds fans by the way) that Leeds are far more 'deserving' than us to be in the Premier League because once they were quite good, they have a bigger stadium, more fans and will spend more money. Not heard anyone suggest that it would be better if Wednesday went up instead.

The only criteria for who is most deserving is who has the most points and if equal, who has the best goal average. If any other measures are brought in then in my view its the end of football as a competitive sport.
