Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but don't Premier League decisions need agreement from all 20 clubs (or is that just for changing the size of the league)? If so I can't see how this would work. Why would the club missing out on Europe vote for it?

All the top clubs want to complete the season because of the financial implications involved whatever date it concludes. This suggestion of a 30 June completion date is being orchestrated by a minority probably led by the likes of West Sham who are still not clear of relegation.

I love the idea that next season is more important than this season...

Why exactly?

There’s literally 0 point. Whatever they do, the 20/21 season is not starting in August, behind closed doors or otherwise.

Also did they not agree to suspend the season indefinitely less than a month ago? And earlier this week they were talking about re starting again in June? They need to just stick with something and go with it. There’re having new discussions for the third time in a month based on circumstances that haven’t changed.

Same with everything, stories change daily.

The 30th June deadline makes sense the further down the leagues you go but not really for Premier League. A League One or Two club (and even some Championship) paying an extra month or two of player wages is probably impossible, especially with income being vastly reduced.

Probably being led by those clubs that have a lot of player contracts ending on that date!

If the players want to stay and collect their wages.

If they're out of contract they are perfectly entitled to walk away and enjoy their holidays.

Taylor (PFA) hasn't exactly shown a flexible attitude towards forward progress thus far.

Apparently, more PL clubs pushing for the season to end latest on July 1st

Only a 14 club majority would be required to push the vote through and more clubs are reportedly growing in favour for this option due to the legal minefield of players contracts ending before the season has finished.

According to The Times, there are 3 ways to end the season on June 30th, with 2 of the 3 options favouring Blades qualifying for a Europa League place and the third option would see the Blades take a Champions League place o_O

See link for the 3 options details:

Come to think of it, it may not be such a bad idea after all.

Look, however this fine season we've had pans out, it's not going to end how we would have liked, and that's cheering on the team. That's sad, it really is. And it's the most Sheffield united thing ever that we miss out on Europe because of some once in a lifetime pandemic.

But of all those options listed in the article above, we benefit. It mentions Watford being fucked a bit if the season goes on 19 games, and I'd argue its unfair doing it on 19 at home advantage can sway a result in some ways.

But let's see what comes of all this. Its uncharted territory and I for one do actually find it interesting.

10 games left isn't it?
2 months to play.
We managed that easy in the championship, we should be fine 👍

They only need 14 clubs to make a decision. They'll get that majority easily if SKY honours most of the tv money and the league puts more games on next season.

If June 30 this set as a deadline...then the season is finished sadly for us.

There is no way they will start games behind closed doors or considered till the current lockdown is relaxed. The football authorities will not do that. I'd think the current lockdown as it is will be in affect for another 3 week period after this one so that take a uo to nearly the end of May. Then time is running out.

I would not be shocked if this ridiculous idea of canning all leagues but just promoting Leeds and WBA comes to pass and they make Liverpool as Champions. Everyone is then happy apart from us, Leicester and Wolves but they'd probably take a legal battle with 3 smaller clubs (at least than the juggernauts).

Would be a nonsense but as I say would not shock me. How they could call someone champions and promote teams but not relegate others or allow for European places would render the integrity of Football null and void. It would be farcical to even consider the above.

Two months from when though? We're ages away from football being possible.
If there's another 3 week lockdown, hopefully behind closed doors games will start up come may?

That'd be nice, but I don't think it's likely the lockdown will end after these three weeks.

How are they allocating European places for whatever the "next" season is in this (all too worryingly plausible) scenario?

Why are Leeds and West Brom special cases? Other teams in other leagues have similar if not better leads e.g. Coventry. If West Brom’s 6 points is worthy of a promotion, they why isn’t Norwich’s 6 point deficit worthy of relegation.

You can’t make special cases when there are similar situations in every league at all levels.

And that’s the problem. With every idea that’s been devised so far there’s teams that will feel harshly done by.

Watford for example are a far better team with Nigel Pearson in charge but some systems will see them go down when there’s a possibility stay up. West Ham have got a horrendous run in as well. I’m yet to see a system that takes everything into account. It’s impossible. If football was that predictable it would be pointless watching it in the first place.

Exactly.
There are businesses opening back up now, never mind 3 weeks.
The government are playing it safe, they have to, they can't be seen to be doing the wrong or risky thing as that would be like committing suicide, they really can't afford to completely lose everyone's confidence in them, my god, they do a good enough job of that on a daily basis!
Let's just see.

Just in case you didnt read all the way down the article. CW wants Europe. ;)

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder though does not expect a deadline to be set for the end of the campaign.

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "I'm sure that we will adjust accordingly. I think for the integrity of the competition and competitions, especially the top end of English football and European football, they'll want to finish the season.

"I believe that there will be an ability next year to adjust, with international breaks, with moving a few games into midweek. We have that ability through organisation and planning to finish this season off.

"But only as everybody said, and I'll reiterate that, when it's safe to do so for everybody. And that obviously we have to take our lead off the government and what they suggest and want us to do."

Guardian wooden spooning it at every opportunity
Furlough extension through June
Lockdown relaxing on some restrictions from around Mid May
No large gatherings for a long time Into 2021
Football behind closed doors possible from mid June to this time next year ( unless a vaccine is available keep in mind the flu vaccine only has a 49% success rate)
And we will all be wearing useless cotton masks

Chinese super League didn't start in February. They set a April date. Now looking at June. And they are many months ahead of it than we are.
