They've announced they are changing it for next season so that it is same version as FIFA use in world cup. Includes semi automotive offsides so can see exactly when ball touched with player tracking. Also definitive on ball in and out of play (Japan at world cup/Arsenal last weekend). You get 3d graphics rather than var drawing lines. Also takes average offside decision 45 seconds less.

Unfortunately the law as it stands means that was handball .Its the law that's the aas in this case not Var.
Ridiculous the way the authorities are playing around with the laws.

I’ve noticed over and over, most football fans have no interest in the correct decision.

When ever there’s judgement, especially the 50/50 decisions they want every decision to go in their favour otherwise there will always be calls of incompetence, favouritism or corruption.

Also bear in mind the huge stakes and pressure means every manager and all players are trying to gain an edge, sometimes even cheat.

Combined with the lack of respect for authority and the current victim culture blaming others, being a ref or controlling VAR almost becomes the impossible job and until attitudes change is doomed to failure.

Doesn't matter how low or high the "block" is, there will still be less chance of getting caught offside, so more likely that chances are created.

Not for me. The fact that goals don't happen too frequently means that each goal is important, and exciting.

Basketball is boring.

A change to make it easier to score goals will also mean it gets even more difficult for weaker sides to hold out and spring the occasional surprise on stronger sides. With the 5 subs rule and extra added time the game has taken a step that way already, but this would be more of a leap.

I suspect it would mean that weaker teams would barely even attempt to win games against significantly stronger opponents and would rest their better players for matches which are winnable. A 'good result' against the strongest teams in the league would be to finish the match without injuries, cards or undue exertion.

It sounds pretty dull to me.

This is a terrible solution. In fact solution is the wrong term completely because it doesn't solve anything it just reverses the problem, instead of being offside by a toe nail you could be onside by a toenail. VAR will still have to draw it's lines to determine the outcome. I just don't see the benefit of this idea at all.

This. Rule changes always have at least one effect, an unintended one. Sometimes if you're lucky, the intended one happens too.

Before VAR level was onside. Indeed linesmen used to ensure there was daylight between attacker and defender. All this does it take it back to that via var!

They just keep introducing rule after rule after rule in a desperate attempt to make this failing system work. 50+ new rules introduced in the last 2 seasons alone - it is utter madness.

It has been over 4 years since they first introduced VAR in England. Has it improved in that time? No. Is there less controversy? No. Is the game better to watch? No. Are they making decisions quicker than before? No.

Literally zero improvement in 4 years. Arguably it is worse than ever. In the normal world, you would ditch a system that is clearly not working within one year maybe. It all begs the question: how exactly are these fucking dimwits measuring the success of VAR? By the size of their smug grin as they draw a few lines on the pitch and deem someone offside by a toenail?
