That is the city. I'm talking about the wider metropolitan borough of Sunderland, where there are plenty of people but no professional football teams.
That's the population of the metropolitan borough (about 275000, 2021 census). The built up city population is about 168000. Sunderland isn't much bigger than Barnsley metropolitan borough (about 244000 in 2021), and is smaller than Doncaster, so their support really is excellent!

Cheers Roy.
Hope we beat Newcastle better dressed neighbours tonight, this is a big game, we slipped up v Leeds, can't afford to do it again!!

COYRAWW!!

Another example of comments including dislike of Wilder. I'm not bothered but it baffles me, what has he done to upset all these rival fans?
He's nothing but respectful of opposing teams in his interviews.

I can't think of any other manager that I have any strong feelings about, either positive or negative (with the possible exception of Steve Evans). Someone called Le Bris manages Sunderland, I don't even know what he looks like.
People say they want more characters in the game rather than polished media friendly drones but when anybody does go off script or shows a level of personality the same people start frothing at the mouth

The Sunderland fans are a pretty reasonable bunch, there are miles worse out there eg Leeds and Newcastle, and we dont carry a reputation for causing trouble; which doesn't mean that we are soft but it means that we go to enjoy the day and hope for a win.

We have taken, for example, the maximum allocation at Millwall - just over 3000 - in recent seasons and there hasn't been one scrap of bother. Millwall hasn't bothered our fans because there has been nowt to get bothered about.

I would like to think that if you went up and spoke to an SAFC fan you'd come away with a pretty favourable impression of us - just like your mate you were at University with.
Pretty much all of this is contradicted by the post match view from. Our council are sending trucks your way to collect salt for winter.

No it's not, look at the link I handily shared with you.

Around 2 million people live in the north east. Stretching from Peterlee to Berwick and as far east to places like Prudhoe and Hexham.

Nufc and safc get good numbers but it's to be expected, they're not going to support Gateshead and Blyth Spartans are they?

South Yorkshire alone has 5 teams in the leagues, take 3 of them away and I think Utd and pigs will be getting 40k+ each in a smaller catchment area than the north east.

That thing about not supporting Gateshead is interesting: there are 3 teams around Newcastle who used to be in the league: Ashington, Durham City, and South Shields/Gateshead (the team moved from one place to the other in the 1930s). All of them fell out of the league and never attracted much support. The current Gateshead, which the people of Gateshead are basically indifferent to, is the third club of that name.

There is no equivalent to Rotherham or Chesterfield up there because the locals will not support smaller clubs. It's not like, say, South or West Yorks or "greater" Manchester where there are decent sized clubs drawing high 4 or low 5 figure crowds in towns surrounding the biggest city. It's odd.
