I got your first point about not caring about what other fans think: we do seem a little insecure as a fanbase, desperate for approval/recognition sometimes. (Not sure that's exclusive to us though.)

I don't agree with your assertion that it's reasonable for a Southampton fan to know nothing about us though, or comparing us to Fleetwood or Crawley.

Firstly, the coverage is completely different. We must have been on live TV 10 or 15 times last year, and the championship (or at least the promotion race) is covered fairly thoroughly by the big news outlets.
If any fan pays a modicum of attention to english football, they would at least know more than 2 former players. This is clearly not the case for a team like Fleetwood for example.

Secondly, if you want to have your view taken seriously, it helps to know what you're talking about. When we were in the championship, I loosely followed league 1, and thus knew a little about Blackburn, Wigan and Rotherham when they came up. If I didn't know anything about them, I wouldn't make any assertions or comments about their team on a football forum. I'd expect a reasonable Southampton fan to do the same.

Why can't it be like this long term? We're still building and barring a disaster (theres always one around the corner at United, as we know), we'll continue to build.

Again, the problem in the past following Bassett and Warnock (reaching their peaks) was that we probably (definitely) didn't have the infrastructure and expertise to continue building, so we regressed to our natural level. Bringing Robson in was theoretically aimed at building on what we have... obviously it didn't and was never likely to work

Now we have a great opportunity to continue to build, we've got a fantastic set up and hopefully we can continue to build and make this more permanent. Still lots of work to be done to prove the theory this season, but we're a quality side now. Not just a whipping boy.

Because football is cyclical and nothing lasts forever. We will never be able to generate the same income from global sponsorship deals that clubs like Man U and Liverpool do, never be able to attract the global fan base that the glamour clubs do.

To become a genuinely big club, you need to be successful during a period where the game’s popularity increases. Liverpool and Man U did this when televised football was introduced. They picked up the first generation of armchair fans, they had national fan bases rather than just local ones and increased this through European success. They already had a global fan base to take advantage of as the PL took off.

We can’t compete with that in the long term. We will never be able to match these clubs for wages so we’ll always end up losing our best players to them, like Southampton do, or even title winning Leicester. And you can’t keep selling your best players and replacing them. Ultimately it fails somewhere down the line.

I wasn't suggesting that we'd ever be on the same level as the top 6, but i disagree with you. Glamour clubs come along because of success. Man City have spunked a fortune over a few years and appear to be on their way to becoming a big club, just like Chelsea have managed to. Meanwhile sleeping giants such as Leeds, Wednesday and Sunderland are languishing.

I think what i would class as the next level would just be a sustained period in this division, but building the football structure at the club to ensure that the philosophy remains, even if Wilder doesn't. Right now i can't see Wilder moving on. I think that if we'd stayed another season in the Championship and stood still, we'd perhaps have lost him, but now we're progressing, so i don't think that clubs like Palace, Southampton, Newcastle etc appeal to him. The move would have to be a top 6 to drag him away, but even then i don't know if that would tear him away if we continue to move forwards... So it would come down to off field issues - Money, personalities, broken promises etc...
