Why are they called the gas? Been going to the Lane since the mid 60s but i've never heard Rovers being called that. Please enlighten this ignorant twat.

Old ground was near a gasworks. Been referred to as The Gas for donkeys years although we've barely played them.

Goodnight Irene is a decent terrace song as well.

When I started following football in 1970, Rovers' nickname at the time were The Pirates. Don't know when it got changed to Gas

I suspect it was Gas before Pirates
Could even have started as a gas works team way back when they used coal gas
But Gas didn't fit the modern profile so the Pirates probably suited some jumped up flash director or summat - unwittingly not knowing that it would be his ship that sank - almost out of trace.

Anyway - it's as good an explanation as any - without doing any actual research or owt like that.

Well, I don't know who they are intending to watch at Brammall Lane or Brammal Lane. They might be a bit disappointed, because it won't be Sheffield United versus Bristol Rovers!

But it was nice to see most of them recognising that we are Sheffield United, rather than just referring to us as 'Sheffield'.
