“agree Madine is a twat , but what’s about the Billy Sharp “fuck off wednesday” clip that did the rounds last year ?
That pip squeak isn’t very clean then for balance is he ?"

I think when sizeable sections of the Wednesday support had been chanting "die piggy die" at him just weeks after his son passed away he was allowed a free one back.

“one fact is that Bolton are a much bigger club than Sheffield. Much more recent success regarding prem and champ football. Fans who turn up regardless unlike blades.”

Doesn't make sense a complete contradiction
Them Bolton fans are obsessed with Sheffield FC.

Actually surprisingly both Bolton and Blackburn have BETTER histories than us.
Hence why both sets of supporters genuinely think of themselves as "big clubs".

Bolton spent 73 season in the top flight
Bolton been in 7 FA cup finals winning 4

Sheff Utd spent 60 season in the top flight
Sheff Utd been in 6 FA cup finals winning 4

But of course both the Bolton and Blackburn historical support is quite poor and less than ours.

During the last 4 season in the Championship Bolton has averaged 14,000 every season.
So their current 13,000 gates are pretty good for them.
Any length of time in league 1 and Bolton will struggle to break 10K gates.

You've missed out two seasons in the UEFA Cup and two League Cup finals.

The bit about 14,000 every season in the Championship is wrong.

The bit about historical support is even more wrong.

Historically Bolton Wanderers are the third best supported team in the area behind Man Utd and Man City, averaging around 20,000 over the course of our history. Not bad considering we have one of the world's biggest clubs and one of the world's richest clubs on our doorstep and we haven't actually won anything since 1958.

Blackburn are a nothing club with crap fans, just the money from he legacy of Jack Walker. I respect Bury far more than both Bolton and Blackburn. Take my hat off to Burnley though. They have an incredible support given how small Burnley/Nelson is.

Blackburn are one of the founder members of the football league. Hardly a 'nothing' club.

Not sure why you respect Bury more.

Burnley has a similar catchment area as Blackburn.

"Decent drink, proper ground and fans who are generally not up there own arses."

To be honest you'd be hard pressed to find a club with fans much more down to earth than us. You can say what you want about dem blades, but up our own arses we certainly are not.

There isn't much point comparing attendances as yours are higher

Corrected it for you

A club's fanbase isn't judged on what other teams are around them. It's based purely on how many fans you have. United have more fans than Bolton. There is no argument to be had. The facts are there.

Where you are based is a major part of the identity and potential of a club . It's unlucky for Bolton fans that they are next door to two giants and fair play to them for supporting their team but it doesn't change anything about how big they themselves are. It's like us saying "If we didn't share a City with another club who get 20,000 every week too then we'd be better supported". It's totally irrelevant because Wednesday exist and have for over 100 years .

Ahh yeh the 14,000 in the last few seasons refers to Blackburn not Bolton.

However you're wrong regards your historical attendances.
Boltons historical average is nearer 15,000 than 20,000.

A google search show the all time league table as at 18th Nov16 to be

19th Sheff Utd 18,981
-------
--------
27th Bolton 17,204

Agree Bolton haven't won anything since 1958
But Sheff Utd haven't won anything since 1925
And haven't even been in a cup final since 1936.

We have the biggest fan base in Britain for a club with such minimal success.
All our success was mainly pre 1st world war ha ha.

There isn't much point comparing attendances without also comparing catchment areas and the number of clubs within them. If you had Man Utd and Man City on your doorstep, your attendances would suffer without a doubt.

But we have Wendy on our doorstep and if you speak to them they think are a bigger club than Man City.
And then we have Weeds up the road and if you speak to them they are convinced they are bigger club (or at least have bigger potential) than Man U.

According to that small club with shit fans they're our cup final tomorrow. Silly beggers.

Sheffield Wednesday might well think that but there's no comparison.

Leeds is only about 10 miles closer to Sheffield than it is to Bolton.

Man Utd are a huge club. It's not just about the 75,000 that turn up for every game, they also have an army of armchair supporters who have never set foot in Old Trafford. Many of them live in places like Bolton unfortunately.

So 17,000 compared to 19,000. Not a massive difference really considering the respective catchment areas.

Whether you last won something in 1925 or 1958 is largely irrelevant really, considering that both of those trophies would have been won before most match-going supporters were born.

That's just utter nonsense. People tend to follow successful teams. If you have a team as successful as Man Utd within comfortable travelling distance of your town, then they will go there rather than a less successful team in a lower league.

I think you're missing his point. The point is that there may be any number of reasons WHY you have a smaller fanbase, but it doesn't change the fact that you do.

Got nowt else better to do on a Friday night than trawl other clubs' message boards and talking about catchment areas and Manchester City?

“ Who’s bigger is debatable. we get around 15k at home, they get 20k,

No Carol Vorderman this chap.

But no one is actually disputing that. There are plenty of bigger clubs than Bolton in terms of fanbase, just not in our region, which is the only realistic comparison.

Fair enough, decent point.
Most Blades think we're a far bigger club than Bolton but the facts suggests the gap is far closer than what people think.

Also regards this season average of 20,500.
Remember this is our 6th season in this crap league and our worse spell in our entire history.

Not many clubs could continuously average 19K in the 3rd tier over numerous seasons.
I reckon if Bolton are still in league 1 for few more years then your gates will regularly dip below 10K.

Although to be honest I'm starting to sound like a Wednesday fan.
It's on the pitch that counts, not how many fans you take away etc.

Just come and enjoy the match day experience tomorrow at Bramall Lane,a proper city centre football ground, full of passionate, knowledgeable supporters and an atmosphere that is difficult to beat with a near full house.I will be surprised if you are not impressed !!

You're still comparing Bolton with Sheffield though. No one is disputing that Sheffield Utd are traditionally a better supported club than Bolton.

Our gates were permanently below 10,000 when we spent the best part of a decade in the Third Division and Fourth Division in the 80's but then most football grounds were half empty in that decade.

I've been before.

Genuinely hope any away fans in the home end get a load of grief off blades fans. Teach the cunts for not getting their club to secure their entire allocation. Yes it WAS down to Bolton for the farce. They said they probably wouldn't sell them so we took them back. Shit fans.

In that case, I have no idea what this thread's about...

I thought we started off with the assertion that “one fact is that Bolton are a much bigger club than Sheffield."

Never mind, it's not really remotely important. Both are long-standing well supported clubs, with loyal fans.

A bit of additional interest for me tomorrow, as my father grew up in Bolton, as a Wanderers fan. When I got into football we lived in Sheffield so he took me to United (I'm sure a purist would say he should have taken me to Bolton, but he worked Saturday mornings so that wouldn't have been possible). He now supports both United and Bolton, and we'll both be on the Kop tomorrow.

Enjoy the game, and good luck for the rest of the season. If we both go up it will make my Dad a happy man!

Wato, you seem a decent fan and I accept you are probably a good lad but what exactly is your point
