No confirmed time yet for the press conference. That may mean it's either simply late being announced to the public, or indeed that it won't be live streamed and we'll just get a 'replay' or edited version. The cynic in me is being cynical.

Anyway, if it is to be livestreamed, it's likely to be at the below link, as the club use a pretty predictable format. Link is dead currently though

Whenever it is and whatever the format we see it, hopefully it's Giddins asking the questions for the beeb. He's been decent recently, and there are spicy topics we want covered...

As always, if you watch the SUFC ones on the club website, you'll need to log in. I'll upload the YouTube ones as and when the club post them, but if you find something before me, please add it to the thread.

Norwich seem to post their's exclusively on their YT site, under the 'live' section, here. No 'upcoming' link uploaded currently. Will add when I see it

I'll do some notes from Wilder's presser when I see it

I would laugh if it ended up being one of those one minute reviews of the next game whilst interviewed from the game before!

I'd also be rather annoyed though!

I doubt Wilder will give much away to be honest anyway.

A few headlines. Had to do it on my phone due to work getting in the way and being out and about, so less waffle this time…

Injuries
  • Shacks foot injured and not recovered as well as hoped. He’s out for a few more weeks
  • Moore needs a hernia op. He will have that when we have cover. It’ll only put him out 2-3 weeks once he has it
  • Vini maybe Sat but defo Swansea/Hull
  • JRS maybe Sat but defo Swansea/Hull
  • Femi in for Saturday
  • Campbell in for Saturday

JTW
  • No new signings will be in for Saturday
  • We have bid for Tom Cannon
  • Confident all number 1 transfer targets will get through the door
  • Need to go through the negotiation process as we will not be wreckless, financially
  • We are in the market for 1 or 2 permanent deals plus 3 loans
  • All the players we want are 100% onboard with coming here
  • We respect that the parent clubs want the best deals, and there’s no rush for them to get it done. “Poker”
  • We have contingency plans and those contingency players want to come to the club, too

General
  • Regarding getting disciplinary fines, “we need to rein it in a little bit, but not too much... I don’t want to take the fight out of the dog… We’re not going to get bullied by anyone”
  • We will have a couple back for the weekend but will still be stretched and need the fans’ support and understanding at the lane
  • Looks like the analytical services we’ve bought will show dividends with signings from abroad in the medium and long term, but for this window, we will have players we know don’t need to adapt to the league or culture

On a side note, he was looking quite fresh faced and healthy. Good on him

I don't know if I'm a naive little bitch but I'm pacified by that, cheers cap.

So nowts changed then. Still do transfers at a snails pace no matter who owns the club.

Unfair criticism if you ask me!

This window is by far the most important in a while. We have rebuilt the team successfully in the summer to put us in contention, it is thin and we desperately need to get in some quality to compliment it. But rules are rules and I agree that we need to safety net our future, stay the right side of the rules and get it right.

No need to pay over the odds for individual players, we have made mistakes in recent years and accrued losses. It is on Wilder’s head too and he has to be seen to be getting it right in terms of targets and overall worth.

Players will join us but never the less it still has to be right.

Do you expect transfers to be wrapped up in a matter of days into the window?

Initial approach - is the player available?
Does the club want to sell or loan or keep him?
Cost of transfer/loan
Player interested in us?
Player's demands
Agents demands
Other clubs interested?
Medical

All of the above takes time and can fail at any point. It isn't as quick as you'd expect.

CW is upbeat and confident so we should be too.

Wilder to leave the presser a minute before end to take a phone call, then walks back in with Shea Charles 🤣
I wish that the reporters had asked this question?

"So Chris, when you say that our targets all want to come to us as a first choice, can you see 2 players arriving from Southampton?"

:p

Should have kept his loud shut two weeks instead of raising expectations amongst the fam base…. Golden rule ‘under promise and over deliver’

Again he’s made it sound like deals are all but done

I will keep my powder dry until the end of the window but I think its disappointing we look like going 7 or 8 games of a season relying on back up players and juniors

Apologies for being a bit dim Cappy but could you please share the link? Can’t find it anywhere 🤷‍♂️
Once the live stream is done, the link dies.

Later they post a replay video up and I (or someone quicker than me) will put it in here mate. I will tag you

Edit: it's available now. See next message

It's really frustrating but I suppose it depends on how desperate we are to go up this season. If we don't get anyone in until deadline day then that's 4 games with the paper thin squad likely to drop points. That might be enough to see us miss out on autos.

On the other hand, if we are thinking more long term then being patient is the best thing to do. Asking the current squad to go again for another 4 games is a big ask but paying over the odds or going for secondary targets will harm us long term.

Who do we think our #1 targets are then?

Probably safe to assume Cannon but who else are we thinking?

I really don’t think we’re gonna sign 3 loans and 2 permanent’s on the last day of the window. It happens when it happens, January is a hard window to deal in, it’s like a domino affect from the big clubs. As soon as we can sign a player I’m sure we will.

He had the right the be confident by the sounds of it with 2 loan deals verbally agreed barring the final formalities.

How was he to know that Southampton would then move the goalposts on a previous verbal agreement and that dynamic changes and injuries at Leicester would lead to Van Nistelrooy reconsidering his own player options.

Nothing is clear cut in the modern world of football and you can’t count your chickens. However in Wilder’s defence the only stumbling blocks that he could foresee would have been medicals and he had great confidence that they wouldn’t be a problem.

I don’t know whether to be embarrassed or sympathise with the lack of understanding towards modern day football that some people have. I would hate to be a tradesman working on their home or something like that, it would be hell I’m sure!

Next three games are run of the mill championship sides.

One of the club's 'short' snippets from the full press conference is on the YT channel

Nothing from the Norwich camp yet

Johannes Hoff Thorup will hold his presser at 1:15pm. No direct link available yet, but it'll be live on the Norwich City YouTube Channel, here

I was of the understanding that the press conference had to be done by 12pm the day before a Saturday kick-off. As time goes by, I know less and less, it turns out.

Went back to the Cardiff press conference to see what he said about transfers. Below is much of his comments regarding transfers, after being asked by Andy Giddings:

"Not a million miles off. We would like to think, we will have bodies in for the Norwich game.... Ideally, for the week leading up to the Norwich game....There's a lot of things that has to happen to get these boys over the line"

"Are you at the stage with medicals and stuff? Has it got to that point?"

"Not really, not really. But, ongoing talks and progression, is key. All the players we've identified want to come here which is great. We are their preferred choice. We have lists if we don't get them over the line, and we've made contact with those players as well. But then the tough part is negotiations from club to club, and agents being involved as well. So, yeah, let's hope, and I'm sure, our hard work will be rewarded in terms of the week leading up to the Norwich game, and certainly, the teamsheet, when the teams get announced against Norwich"

After the above, the talk moves onto specific individuals (BBD, Choudhury), and potential interest.

So there isn't a concrete answer of "Yes we will have players signed by X date". He was confident, as evidenced by the "I'm sure" comment towards the end, but that doesn't guarantee feet through the door.

I imagine he's probably a bit annoyed as well that he hasn't gotten the reinforcements in yet that he wanted. But at the same time, he's done this dance before. He knows that things aren't simple where transfers are concerned. So the fact that he still seems positive when speaking to the press is, for me, a sign to be optimistic that things will happen. Just needs a bit more patience.
