Since Cappy will no longer be able to provide his great service of covering the pre-match press conferences, here is Ruben Selles' pre match press conference for the Birmingham match tomorrow summarised by our AI overlords.

Reflection on the Bristol City Defeat

Ruben Selles clarified that after reviewing the game, he did not see the loss as a result of a "defensive thing," but rather an issue with the team's play in transition. [0:28] He elaborated, stating the main problem was "our shape and our behavior when we... lose the ball." [0:36] Selles confirmed that the team has been "actively working and correcting those issues" in training to ensure it doesn't happen in the future. [0:44, 0:49] He also acknowledged that while pre-season was strong, the team couldn't translate those performances into a competitive match, explaining you can never emulate the "stress" and specific situations of a league game during pre-season. [1:23]

Team News and Player Updates for Birmingham Clash

  • Team Rotation: For the cup match against Birmingham, Selles confirmed there will be changes to the starting lineup due to the short recovery time. "I will make some changes. I will keep some of the players in the lineup," he said, noting that having only two days to recover makes the situation difficult. [4:20, 4:15]
  • Djibril Soumaré: The new signing is fit and set to make his debut. Selles confirmed, "he's ready to play" and "he will have minutes tomorrow." [4:36, 4:54]
  • Rhys Norrington-Davies: When asked about the player being jeered by some fans upon being substituted, Selles said he had spoken with him and other players. He described Rhys as a "professional" who will "accept that kind of situation in the best way he can." [3:24, 3:26] He explained the change was a tactical decision to "change the dynamic of the game," not a reflection on one individual. [3:40]
  • Michael Cooper: Selles put an end to any speculation about the goalkeeper's fitness, stating unequivocally that he is "fully fit" and has been training without issue. [12:56, 12:59]
  • Jack Robinson: Addressing rumors linking the captain to Wrexham, Selles was firm in his position. "No one should go before we get anybody in," he stated, adding, "as much as I understand, Jack is our player and right now he is our captain." [8:41, 8:56] He sees him as a key part of the squad for the immediate future.

Transfer Situation: Incomings and Outgoings

  • Incomings: The priority remains strengthening the defence. "We are looking for those defenders to strengthen the areas, and that's exactly where we are," Selles said. [5:18] He confirmed, "The club is actively in the market," but as of the press conference, there was no new news to report. [5:24, 5:29]
  • Outgoings: Selles delivered a strong message regarding potential departures, stating, "I would be very disappointed if someone goes out before someone comes in right now... we cannot allow that to happen anymore." [7:04, 7:12]
  • Recruitment Strategy: When looking for new players, Selles emphasized the need for leadership and experience in the division. He stressed the importance of finding "a good mix" of talented young players and experienced professionals who provide a "platform for the other ones to... to grow." [10:06, 10:15]

On Integrating New and Young Players

Selles identified Jefferson Caceres and Ehije Ukaki as the young players who have been closest to the first team. [13:32] He spoke at length about the challenges facing young foreign players, highlighting two main factors: the language barrier and adapting to the "Championship tempo," which he considers to be among the top 10 in world football. [15:13, 17:47, 17:51] The club's approach is to first ensure players are "calm off the pitch" by providing a stable platform with housing and support for their basic needs, allowing them to focus fully on football. [15:55]

Outlook on the Birmingham Challenge

Selles expects a "difficult opponent" in Birmingham. [8:20] He noted they had a "fantastic season" to earn promotion and were impressive in their opening game against Ipswich, where they were "dominant and controlling a lot of parts of that game." [7:55, 8:13] He is aware of the challenge his team faces.

Sorry, don't have the timestamp, but he did say thy were hopeful of two in tomorrow (but not in time to play v Birmingham) but before Swansea.
I think he said he'd love two in tomorrow before Swansea but knows that might not happen.

Good work!
Please keep it up 🙏

I do like how he speaks. Very intelligent man. I wouldn't want to make him angry though!

Thanks for doing this neshfox. Much appreciated.

In which Sting congratulates himself for showing more restraint than Sir Jimmy Savile OBE:

In a 1981 interview, he stated, "I'd done teaching practice at secondary schools and been through the business of having 15-year-old girls fancying me - and me really fancying them! How I kept my hands off them I don't know."

In fairness, the Rolling Stones would just have married them!

I will keep some of the players in the lineup," he said, noting that having only two days to recover makes the situation difficult.

Not as difficult as counting to 3 though eh?!

He's right? Thursday/Friday to recover then we play again Saturday?

I read it as 3 days Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, but he could have been talking post match Thurs/Fri so everyone is right and I am wrong.

Fuck's sake Wardsy, are you Ruben in disguise?! What about Wednesday? 😂 ;)

They are in big trouble and lucky to have enough players to make a team.

Literally no-one knows what he said after the game on the pitch.
He could have said - ‘let’s leave this result here. I’ve learned something, we can do better, but it stops here and we go again. Now let’s clap the fans’.

Or, could have said, ‘listen lads, that banner before the game back-fired’

Or, ‘what’s you Nando’s order?’

Feet up on the coach back and jobs a good un 😄
Oh fuckity fuck fuck.
I owe you a huge apology mate.
I just went to get myself ready to watch the match, and realise it's tomorrow not tonight!! 😂
Never in my too-many-to-mention years of watching the Blades have I got the wrong day before!!
Sorry pal ❤️

I was kind of hoping you were going to Birmingham!

I don't like him. Summat about him. Showing them up on the pitch after 1 game.
For the sake of our club i want him to move us forward but he seems a bit strange.
I don't Like him he sounds like a school PE teacher. He's never been a professional footballer only played for his Uni & only managed Hull & Reading before they booted him out. But we're in good company as our players dont like him & his chaotic tactics either. OK against non league & lowly league teams but can't cope with Champ teams. It's all a bit of a nightmare.

The part about Robinson clearly sounds like he's on his way out and it's only a question of finding the replacements.

If you don’t like him he’ll be brilliant!
