Hill got some dog's abuse today despite being damned good, in the main.

hill did well with the number of 2 on 1's he had to deal with.. played better when DW switched Flynn to the left to offer him some protection

With some comments on Deadbat's thread it looks like some have decided Hill is the scapegoat....some aren't happy unless there is someone to blame

I thought it was pretty obvious that Bettsyblade86's comments were an attempt to bring some tongue in cheek humour to the thread, as well as introducing a different tak on things. But then I forgot that Mongomery is up there with McCabe in that noone must ever say anything positive about him.

Not true. Monty was an honest player. Not something you could easily say about Super Blade

we've just scored 5. 3 points. unbeaten. but still shit is banded about...i'm sure its just t warm up for when we have a bad run...

If Hill plays at Centre half he is quite rightly the scapegoat, as he ain't good enough there...

If he plays at LB, less so as he seems solid enough. If he is left exposed by the rest of the team it's something that Wilson needs to sort by either giving him cover, of buying a LB who can cope being exposed...

Aren't you just being cynical about people being cynical? Just a thought.

no...just sayin no matter what.even going on an un beaten run some people would moan. waiting for the day that we actually all are United...just sayin

Montgomery was not clueless - he was just very very limited in his footballing ability and tried to make up for it with bags of hard work and running - he was very, very fortunate that we had little alternative choice and he made an excellent living out of football - as regards talent not in the same class as Gannon - he could pick out a pass and his dead ball execution was first class!
Neither Quinn or Williamson could beat the first man from a corner and very rarely from a free kick
Having been saddled with touchline to touchline mediocrity over the past few years many supporters have forgotten any quality we had - remember McCall when he came to us an old man - Monty not fit to clean his boots even at 40 year old!

Apart from on his debut for Hull City on Saturday, when they scored from a corner he took. Ho hum... Quinn apparently played very well for them (my missus is a hull season ticket holder). I think he's perhaps for us been saddled with the form he showed under Blackwell when he was clearly under instruction just to get the ball forward as soon as possible. Quality player, who loved the club. Sad to see him go.

Monty.... well, limited is fair, but let's not forget, he was part of some good times at the club too. A footballer who's done well for himself in the Blackwell/Warnock moulded teams where the midfield is largely there to win the ball and get rid asap, rather than keep in as per Wilson's plan.

Both did well for the club all in all, however the only one we may miss is Quinn (albeit not on Saturday it seemed)

We did miss a few attributes of a Monty type for a while with the central midfield getting overrun time after time (particularly a period during the first half) :)

All this scapegoat nonsense is just that, nonsense. If a player isn't very good, some fans are honest enough to call it. If someone thinks a player isn't cutting it then again, they have the right to voice an opinion.

There are no scapegoats, just points of view and if certain players are seen as a bag of shite then why should they be heralded as "100% Blades" simply because they run around a lot?

i wholeheartedly concur. every time we bash Monty, we get called 'haters', scapegoat hunters, doom merchants, cynics and Wendies. Quite how any can think he's a good footballer is completely beyond me. we never say he didnt work hard. we never said he treated the club with anything less than respect.

but he was rubbish. and i dont understand how anyone can think any differently.

But Monty wasn't rubbish,he just took the blame for the teams failings espeically if we lost(as have Quinn,Porter,Hill etc). They get the blame even when they are producing consistantly better performers than the so called better players in the team e.g. McDonald,Maguire,Lowton (last season). Any good pass(and they were plenty) decent tackle, work rate and man marking was ignored by many as they had decided they didn't like him.

Monty contributed well to style of football we employed under Warnock and Blackwell...he was good in that system.

The treatmant of Quinn by some fans during the games was also a disgrace. He was critisised for doing something wrong when he was sometimes the only player trying to effect the game.

The scapegoat culture means they are blamed by people who cannot even acknowledge when these players are performing well. We have fans blaming Hill for everything when he has arguably been the best defender for us so far this season...yet no critisism to the same degree of the other 3 defenders.

I was just going to post the same thing. On Saturday the murmuring started every time the ball went towards Hill. As it turned out, his control and passing were quite adequate.

Given a run at left back I suspect LJF won't walk back in until Hill has to miss a game.

I liked him and still better than doyle in my opinion, Monty reminded me a little of Trevor Hockey 100% man who never stopped, not the most gifted but never hid.

.

Haha, if ever a player has divided fans hey m8! i say he's rubbish n get 2 likes, you say he's not and get 2 likes!

i accept what you're saying and he has been by no means the only one. i dont even get to watch united as often as id like. but i personally, honestly and truly do not think he was ever good enough to play for us. clearly out managers did, or were they just unable to shift him? none of us really know. but he has earned a very good living out of football without much ability i dont think.

but he's always done right by us. he always tried hard and when we finally wanted rid, he went to australia. il say that for him.

but he's still rubbish :)

I think you are right.

Even during the memorable 2002-3 season when we played some of our best football since the 1970s, there were still people moaning. And when we hit a temporary blip and lost a few games in March of that season there were people calling for Warnock to be sacked!

Same happened in the promotion season of 2005-6.

In my opinon he was/is rubbish, he still can't control a football any better than a playground footballer, as a so called professional that makes him rubbish in my eyes. There weren't plenty of decent passes, they were so few that the Monty fans can reel them off in one short post, e.g. Newcastle away blah blah blah. I'm certainly not going to change my opinion, as I'm sure the other Monty detractors aren't, and I'm doubtful you'll change yours so why not just add the little ditty "In my opinion" to our rantings because at the end of the day you can't quantify just how good or bad this criminal to football was/is and there you have it, love him or hate him it matters not, I'm just thankful we won't have to see his talentless and clueless displays in a Blades shirt again. I'm sure some of you are in mourning but hey, we're all Blades on here aren't we?

Enough of Monty.
Who's going to fill the scapegoat vacancy?
Even money "flapper" Howard and "one trick" Flynn
5 to 4 Williams, Hill or McMahon depending on how many mistakes they make leading to goals against.

Me. I don't want to speculate. Just want to see them all give their best and do well. I think they can. Lets give them a chance for 8 - 10 games. So far so good (ish)

but he was rubbish. and i dont understand how anyone can think any differently.

Other than a whole bunch of mangers who know a whole lot more about football than anyone on here.

None the less, his time was up for us, he offered nothing to our current style.

Who's going to fill the scapegoat vacancy?

There is no vacancy, there are no scapegoats, merely poor players playing poorly on occasion and being rightly criticised for doing so ;)
