Well done metty. First things that popped into my head seeing the name was 'Come to Me' and that song. Great singer, the first Motown artist. I seem to recall towards the end of his life he did a fair bit of recording in the UK. itsinyerblood will hopefully be along soon to clarify this.![]()
Thanks SouthEssexBlade (smile), yes, MJ did have a spell recording in the UK under the auspices of a well known DJ formerly noted for his Northern Soul reputation. Apart from his own career, he also wrote for Tyrone Davis, Johnnie Taylor, and The Dells. He died at the relatively young age of 54, so who knows what he could've gone on to create? Although not one of the greats (in my opinion), MJ managed to sustain a career with the occasional good song as his calling card.
Not in the same bracket as the other Marvin, Teddy, Solomon, Donny and a few others, but I always thought he didn't quite the breaks and subsequently the reputation his voice deserved.
Still, if we sign this lad I can say I saw Marv Johnson perform![]()
I find that staggering. How can you be into music and not know about, well, all of it? I can understand some people not knowing about pre-rock and roll but 1999? Jesus.Funny you mention Solomon SEB. Only last week I gave a history lesson to a local musician whose musical history began around 1999, before that he was a blank canvas so I took him on a journey going back to the 40s/50s and how things developed since then. Solomon B was a superb vocalist, one of those once in a decade singers that. like great footballers, seem to come from nowhere and brighten our lives with their magnificence.

I assume he learnt to play just by exercises and being taught modern songs.

I'll pick a rose for my Rose .......Come to me was released on the Tamla label as the first release on a Berry Gordy label and was picked up nationally by United Artists. He recorded some great stuff inc " I miss you baby ( oh how I miss you) which got a UK release.
He recorded for Ian Levines Motor City set up and maybe appeared on one of his shows very early nineties. He died quite young though.
He was also a songwriter.
