Porter and last neet

Flynn offers a lot more than his dodgy corners ,he holds the bal up and offers great support to the full back behind him. Its no conincidence that the full back on his side always plays better ,McMahon looked much better last night and Portsmouth switched their attacks to the right. Pup is right our players now dont show enough for Macdonald like Quinn used to and he is also suffering from a drop in form like Flynn. We missed Flynn when he was suspended as we would miss Macdonald ,dropping them would be stupid and some of the comments on here are pathetic.

Quinny was sat just behind me on the JSS last night with his bother Alan. Madine also comes to a lot of our games for some reason.

Spot on Sitwell! Flynn is a good little footballer, maybe a little short on pace over a long stretch, but nippy over a few yards. He is very aware defensively, not often does he waste the ball and is an intelligent reader of situations.

Somehow, after he takes a few dodgy corners (and I'd challenge that view as sometimes corners are delivered to the near post purposely, not because the taker can't lift the ball as some seem to percieve) and falls over a few times, he becomes a poor player.

I'm happy my view on him concurs with that of Danny Wilson, 30 odd years in the professional game, rather than that of some amateur pundits on here :)

Chaps,

Why does DW play him? No pace, lacks close control, not a goalscorer, he is ponderous. When he plays, we have to play the ball long and get it wide to hit hopeful crosses into the area. 'Cos he is slow,
can't even work the channels. It is barmy.

In contrast, Allan for P'smouth showed certainly in the first half what can be achieved if you have a player able to come off defenders, play in the hole between midfield and the back-line, has quick feet and skill. He was a constant threat and made things happen. With this type of player, don't always have to hoof the ball, as Keith Curle remarked our pattern of play is predictable, good teams will set themselves up to defend against it. Having a creative forward would enable us to mix it up a little. Even though Blackman, Kitson and Cresswell are like Porter, they offer a bit more on the deck.

Surely Miller must be better than Porter, playing him would offer something different, unsure if he is the quick footed, creative forward we need, but he must be quicker than Porter and from the Notts Country game he can take a goal, something Porter can't. Miller time?

Though Porter had a decent game personally. Might be repeating myself but I'd like to see Miller/Porter with Blackman moving right in place of Flynn, who was total shite.

UTB

the reason we arent as pretty as we would like is maccy d is not as effective in games so far
Porter does what he does reasonably well , but like all strikers needs feeding

I disagree with the thoughts on Porter, thought he played well last night. I think if Miller is going to play, it has to be for Blackman. Perhaps this could be tried in the cup this weekend?

My thoughts exactly. I think DW will take the opportunity to change things round a bit on Saturday without disrespecting Bristol and fielding a weakened team. Some decent money on offer in the Cup to clubs who progress to the next round so he'll be keen to get a victory.

Its make do and mend. We got rid of Quinn (our creative outlet on the left) and Willo (our creative outlet on the right - who imho made McDonald look like Monty last night, largely because he had people to pass to...), Lowtons gone and hey presto... none of the kids we didn't give much of a run out to last season aren't good enough. We're stuck with semi hoof style whether we like it or not, at least we pass it around the back four for 2 minutes before hoofing ;)
'semi' hoof!! :D

it's the neeeewwww style :D

I was a big critic of Porter until the end of last season. Since then he has slowly chqnged my opinioin, bit by bit. With Ched in the clink and Cressy with a dislocated shoulder, Porter came in and did well. He was mucher better than the ineffective Beattie. Away at Exeter he came on and did well, he was good in the play offs against Stevenage and it was a mistake by Wilson not to play him in the final.

I thought Porter played well last night, as he has done for the most part when he has been called upon to do so this season. It is true that he is slow and limited in ability. However he works hard and leads the line pretty well. His touch is not great, but he wins a lot of headers. He is definately inferior to Kitson, but most in the division are.

I agree with the others that if Porter had a better partner then he would get more credit. Not necessarily better, but a more traditional striker. A fox in the box, poacher or whatever. Someone like Miller really. A striker that anticpates flick ons, gambles and stays close to their strike partner. This is a reflection on Blackman's style. I noticed against Walsall that Blackman and Kitson were too far apart. Kitson won a few headers and flicked a few balls into the danger area and Blackman was nowhere to be seen. I remember thinking I bet Miller would have been on the end of that. It was the same on Monday night. Miller and Porter played well together against County. I hope they get a chance to play together at Brizzle this weekend.
