I always thought that story was a bit of an urban legend. Was it reported in the press? Surely, even in the early 80's, footballers were paid enough to afford a (what) £10 rail fare.

I'm sure I read the story in the Yorkshire Post or similar about MacPhail and a student card. Around 1984ish

Is he the one who was (is?) wanted by Interpol - or was that Woolhouse? Wasn't it something to do with running off with the pension fund of the poor sods who slaved in his jute factory in Calcutta or something??

The Jute factory pension scandal was Reg Brealey. He was later introuble with the police when he tried to takeover at Darlington for some sort of bankruptcy irregularity.

I seem to remember The Biography book has something about Jimmy Dunne being interned during the Irish Civil War?

Yes Bearley is the Jute guy ,Woohouse is on the run in Australia ,and Hinchcliffe got about 6 years I think ,should have been 60. He took me for a few grand both personally and through Bukta ,when he was living in Parkead Hall and a Mansion in Grosvenor Square it was very hard to stomach.

just remembered michael twiss from man u,who wanker bruce signed........another one who should have been locked up for impersonating a footballer, mind you could have been fergie trying out his mind games

George Oghani- youth team player in 70's, released by Man U, we signed him, bit of a scoop on paper as he was highly rated. Not too long after he was released; appears he had a penchant for taking ladies against their will, usually in the Nether Edge area around where the club hd a hostel for youth team players...

Made more than 200 league appearances (Bolton, Burnley, Scarborough and Carlisle among the clubs he played for). he was in our books a few years before Ian Benjamin came to us and could have been our first black player since Charlie Wharton in the mid 1890s

back to the vinnie jones stuff....sure he's done time in america for beating someone up in a pub....it was in the papers a whilse since!

His brother is always at the lane ANT 1 OR 1 ANT depending on whether he's in the porsche or the range rover.
You could always ask him to pay you up and clear the family name

Wasn't Fatty Foulke convicted for fighting with Wendy fans during a game?

He certainly didn't go to jail, but did Alan Quinn get a night in the cells for that dust up in Hillsborough after the 1-0 derby victory at the Lane a few years back?

I seem to remember the fight was over a game of pool doubles...

Jock Dodds' troubles with the law are mentioned in the who's who book.

Here is a paragraph from the who's who book........

When the war ended, he rebelled against the maximum wage, playing in the Republic of Ireland and in June 1950 he was expelled from the Football League over his role as the recruiting agent for the Colombian club Millionarios (the Colombian League was not affiliated to the FIFA). Later he spent many years as a successful businessman in many varying ventures- hotel, a rock factory, night clubs- occasionally troubling and no doubt amusing the Blackpool Constabulary who were regular visitors, both on duty and off.

Doesnt mention anything about doing time

Wasn't there a player who was on United's books as a youth teamer but ended up getting bombed out of the club and subsequently ended up getting banged up for quite a while for dealing drugs?
Was a youth player called Smith, a right back.

Hinchcliffe was Director Of Finance under Woolhouse.

Has been inside a couple of times but "short" sentences for white collar crime.

Has been prosecuted for benefit fraud a couple of years ago - what a come down from the high life !

Porridge update, although already mentioned by the OP, way back in 2009.

Charlie Hartfield has since gone big time, with a 9 year sentence in 2015 for conspiracy to supply amphetamine and cannabis.

Shame, I always liked him, wasn’t a particularly good player, but very committed, shall we say ;)

Paul McGrath.

I know a bobby the Manchester Met who told us at the time that he'd just had Paul McGrath in his Longsight nick. D&D with no fixed abode. :(

I believe he's since written about that in his autobiography saying it was his nadir.
Mistaken identity??
Glad Paul , hic!!!, cleared that up.

Not such a small time crook. I used to do some work for him in the 70s and never had a problem with him, not so many local contractors who he just decided not to pay. He was also a pig fan. When I worked for him he was buying up Original Wednesday Shares at any price.

My last accountant was also Paul Woolhouse accountant at the time of his United involvement and used to sit alongside him in the directors box. Ever the gentlemen, when I asked him about what had happened he tactfully answered that it was a long time ago and couldn't remember.
