Pt.2 of settling a debate with fellow blade 'metalblade' (don't know how to link user).

I am saying that I'd reluctantly sell Murphy for £5m and Done for £2.5m, especially now we have Adkins and a seemingly top scout on board to find top players with the £7.5m we achieve. He disagrees. I am just really curious who would agree with me, and who would disagree.

Difficult one. It would be a good offer and a big profit on him but we are short of attacking quality and that amount of money might not make a massive difference to us. I'm going to say no for now, not been with us long.

It's a No from me. Can't see the point of selling arguably our best players and then hoping we get summat better with the cash - massive gamble. Didn't happen with McDonald, and the money from Maguire was only, eventually, used to get Brayford in - much later and didn't solve the central defence problem that selling him helped to create (but not knocking Brayford, he could be our talisman player when he comes back IMHO)

Short sighted suggestion. I think the pursuit of money with a view to signing talent that will replace established and proven players seems.....well I think the word is daft. Is that what we're meant to do then? Finally find a player who'll score the goals we've cried out for and then consider selling him? The most difficult type of players to find are those that can score regularly. The last one we had was Evans, so let's not get carried away with the nonsense suggestion that we'll get x amount and go out and find his equivalent for a lesser figure. Should we achieve promotion with the help of Done's goals his value will shoot up and we'll have kept hold of a player that some of us would've considered selling for a couple of million. With hindsight that will be seen as loose change compared to what he will be worth to this club.

If you're happy staying in this division then by all means sell our best players, just don't complain when we contemplate another season in this poxy division.

Has anyone offered that amount of money for him, or is this a game of 'Indecent Proposal'?

I'd shag him for a million, if that's what you mean? :)

OP;

We should keep. It's time to get out of this division, and Matt Done is something special at this level.

That's from a fans perspective and I understand that. I want a goalscorer just as much as anyone but I do think there comes a point where you have to sell. Let's be honest and not get too carried away with regards to Done, he was a decent player last season and had a decent season but you do see some of those players with a one off decent season slip slowly back down. I wouldn't say he's particularly proven as a striker given that he started as a LB and I think £2.5m can easily get you a proven 25 goal a season proven goalscorer at this level no problem and then have some left over to play with afterwards.

What are your suggestions for replacing Done? Who's currently playing that you reckon will score 25 goals in a season?

Agreed, there's always a limit. I'd snap someone's hand off for £5M for Murphy - ref your other poll.
But as we found when we gave our leading goal scorer away the other season*, before our season collapsed - goal scorers are a rare breed, hard to come by and essential to promotion. We can't risk having to try to find a new one right now.

*Blackman's sale must have cost us over five times what we got for him.

I reckon that could get you somebody like Joe Garner from Preston for example.

I reckon any forward worth his salt will want to move to the Championship, not to a club in this division. We managed to secure Done because moving from Rochdale was a no-brainer career-wise, but that's the exception. Once we're in the Championship attracting players of a better grade will be easier, but good players, especially proven goalscorers, simply won't come to a Division 1 club. The fact that Garner was your one nomination suggests that you're no clearer about who's available to replace Done if he was sold.

Daft idea, hold onto your best players and look to move forward. The answer to all of this is hidden in the word 'best', that should tell you who we must retain.

Difficult one. It would be a good offer and a big profit on him...

Is our objective at the end of the season

a) to obtain the greatest profit in the division, or
b) to obtain the greatest points total?

For a football club not in the premiership with any degree of permanence, profit is totally pointless. Assuming we can generate sufficient income from and operating revenues, if we can't replace Done (or any other player) with someone better what is the point of selling anyone?

How could I tell you were immediately going to put down any suggestion I had.. How did Bristol City manage to persuade Agard to drop down having just got promoted? That's why you asked me the question in the first place though, because you planned in advance, on picking to bits whatever my reply was going to be, no matter how plausible it was. Anybody can pick faults with any suggestion of a player, there's no real skill in that i'm afraid. Overall though, it's quite disappointing that a blade would do that to another blade.

Do you really believe that nonsense? You're seriously suggesting that I'd set you up? It hadn't crossed my mind to do as you're describing, but somehow you've interpreted my post to cover up the weakness of your idea. You've not thought this through, so consider the implications of your proposal and try and see where selling our best players would leave us.

Attempting to construe anything I've said as one Blade setting up another Blade is simply contrived daftness. I'm sure you can do better than that.

He's hardly launched a personal tirade against you. I think you need to take a step back and a breath here fella.

All itsinyerblood has done is suggest that we shouldn't sell our 20 goal a sesson striker as it will be tough to replace him. Your suggestion of Garner proving that as it would be an unlikely signing. Agard was a different situation, Rotherham and Preston will have very different outlooks once promoted. Hardly the most unreasonable thing posted in the world.

The point is the idea was always going to be weak according to you, whatever the actual real strength of the idea, you were always going to pick a fault and if you say otherwise then i'm afraid IMO your not being truthful. Therefore I'm not construing anything, just simply stating a fact that has obviously hit a sensitive spot with you, indicating you know I have unexpectedly unveiled the absolute truth.

:)

I'm not sure you understand the whole scenario here mate. It's not about his opinion, I respect that as I do everybody. It's the motives behind why he asked the question in the first place and the way he has responded only confirms those initial motives. FYI though, everything is taken with a pinch of salt, i'm pretty laid back pal even if it doesn't come across that way. :)

My god (and I speak as an atheist, so figuratively speaking), you really do consider yourself a regular Sherlock Holmes, don't you?

Uncovering 'absolute' truths uh? What, as opposed to those half baked truths that so often get passed for an absolute? I'm more than happy for you to respond with such dubious assertions, your prerogative and all that, but the more you write the more you tangle yourself up in knots. Bladepicker is correct, my original response was all that mattered, but somehow your nerve-ends have alerted you to the fact that you began a nonsense post and have been taken to task for such a stupid proposal. Perhaps you should consider joining our board, show your fiscal acumen etc?

Let's end with this shall we. My opinion, along with yours also, will not be changed so all in all it's pretty much a pointless argument. We are debating a hypothetical scenario as if it is the truth which is shocking in itself. By the way, don't take this as a submission on my behalf (don't enjoy doing that) I just think it's been blown out of all proportion really, as WincobankBlade has kindly suggested already.

This is a Sheffield United message board where points and opinions will be discussed.

You had said you would sell our 20 goal striker and someone asked you whoyou would replace him with. The only motive I can see is that he wanted to know your answer!

It was a perfectly reasonable question given your point. Not sure it warranted the response of disappointment in a fellow Blade doing that to you.

I'd suggest if Blades with differing opinions isn't to your liking you probably shouldn't be starting polls ;-)

If we couldn't get someone better for £2.5m then someone most certainly wouldn't be doing their job right. Every player has a price, that's the reality.

Thank god somebody on this forum seems to have some sense. Done is not even worth £1m let alone £2.5m. Itsinyerblood is too focused on what has happened in the past and too narrow-minded to even consider anything happening in the future that is different from the past. Just because we haven't found replacements for players in the past, to him that automatically causes the future to become the same and that's the reason for the un-willing nature to sell, unbelievable. Like you say, if the club can't find a replacement for Done for £2.5m in division 3, we need to seriously evaluate our scouting.

Selling the family silver has got SUFC precisely nowhere over the last 48 years. For me, build a team around the better players, don't sell 'um

Have we learned nothing from history? Good players are irreplaceable no matter what the financial reward. Done, Brayford, Murphy are the three I would build my team around. These are players too good for this level and if we can get a couple more then we will get promoted.

Shovel out the shit and let's buy good replacements.

Message, do not sell at any cost.

You'd shag anyone for a quid from what I am told :)

No from me. We need to nurture ALL our players and get the best out of them. It's amazing how much confidence and self-belief can do to a player's ability.
