James Harper... good at waving his hands about!!! Last seen directing planes on the runway at Heathrow!!!
I bumped in to him in town one afternoon not long after he signed for us. He was absolutely buzzing about playing for us when he spoke to me. I know players will always talk a good game but he seemed genuinely delighted.

All those players who (and I use the term loosely) represented us on December 26th 1979.

Here's one on behalf of my Dad - Jack "Jumbo" Chisholm - apparently waved his arms a lot and directed others into the fray; Phil Thompson was his love-child no doubt, and probably there's some of his ancient DNA also in Dean Hammond.

To be fair to Pinocchio going from captaining the champions of Europe to a club not long since in Division 4 was quite a big step down. At least he's had some good things to say about us lately.

The gormless jug-eared scumbag who recently signed for Birmingham. The most odious piece of shit ever to befall this club. I hope he gets what he fully deserves.

This sounds inspired by some inside knowledge - have you an amusing anecdote to share with us TD?

His breaches of discipline last season, then his refusal to train before the Millwall game in March and then his 'retweeting' of insults towards us from Birmingham fans on Twitter after he left.
This jumped up little prick owes everything to us for even giving him a career in the first place, instead he's shown us nothing but contempt.
I wish him nothing but misery, pain and failure. Never hated a player more quite frankly.

Yes, our Ashley was a bit of a cock wasnt he. Only thing i recall him doing of anybenefit to us was scoring twice in a 2 nil win for us over dirty Leeds at the Lane on a sunday afternoon kick off. Generally though he didnt give a fook.

Devlin was a class player at times and on his day could terrorise a defence single handedly. Remember a game v Preston on new years eve at Lane where we came back from 2 down to win with a late goal. He was simply outstanding that day. Trouble was his boyhood team came in for him and he had his head turned. He didnt want to know after that and played like a cock. I lost all my respect for him after that and would have driven the nobhead to Brum mi sen.

Celtic was his boyhood club - FACT

legs-of-wood flattered to deceive if I remember correctly...

I once had a beer with him after a game and he was a mustard fella real good company he told us that when he signed Blackwell thought he played left side midfield!!! Bout sums Blackwell up as a manager

Peter Beagrie

First time I ever watched a player wander around not giving a rat's, whilst all around him worked hard.

With the exception of Kenworthy and Speight. Always gave their all, but I know where you are coming from.
Speight was carried off injured wasn't he defending our goal? As he was a key player for us and there was only one sub in those days I'd imagine this contributed to the flattering scoreline. I was only 9 and can't remember it that well. Can just remember the sound of the ball hitting the crossbar for us and them getting 2 latish goals in quick succession which killed us off and gave a gloss to the scoreline.

Did he ever actually play for us? I seem to recall Warnock getting him in on loan but I can't actually remember seeing him in a Blades shirt. Saying that, my memory is'nt what it used to be!

Edit: Just googled him and he played 3 times for us. So my memories not too bad after all.

He did better than get him on loan, he signed him for a million quid I think.

Paul Devlin (toward the end of his stay). I seem to remember him getting too big for his boots and getting booed off at a night game. (I was only a young lad at the time so I maybe wrong).
Correct. If we started another thread about players who were 'playing for away' he'd probably be first on the list it was so obviouse.

Great little player for us when he wanted to be though.

I seem to recall an on-field bust up between Paul Devlin and Marcus Bent. I think Bent put a shot into the kop when Devlin was in a great position for the pass. He certainly had his heart in it then! Was this the infamous Port Vale match?

Devlin still has an affinity with us. He regularly talks about us on his FB page and has a fair few Blades 'friends' on there. He still sees some of the players from back then.
I will agree though that that match v Watford at BL was an embarrassment. I thought he let himself down then but was a terrific player for us mostly.

True story.

After one a miserable home defeat that more or less condemned us to relegation , I think it was Middlesbrough in the 10/11 season, Micky Adams marquee £20k a week signing drowned his sorrows by travelling back to London on the train in first class quaffing champagne without a care in the world. I don't think I can ever remember a player treating the club and the fan base with as much contempt as Marcus Bent did.

There's been more that didn't give a toss than what did, hence why we have spent 12 seasons in Division Three or lower since 1979
