Now I've had time to reflect, I can post knowing I'm not going to want a whole new team. Although I felt like that yesterday.

We lack core organisation in defence, bite and leadership allover the field and general movement in the attacking areas.

Lets start from the top, Howard and Freeman for me are two that were genuinely blameless yesterday. In that first half I would've shook Freeman's hand - he was the only one who went to ground in a challenge, offered himself as an outlet and ran at them. He showed bite and desire. HE'S A FECKING RIGHT BACK FFS!!!

The other 3 in defence were awful, including Edgar. They were ran ragged, admittedly not much help for the centre halves from the midfield but they should still be able to cope with a side that was in the bottom 4 before yesterday, blindfolded. I'd replace Collins with Burn as soon as physically possible. McEveley was getting shown up, big time. Every pass was out of play or back to them, he was getting ran ragged by Harriot and he showed no fight or desire at all and didn't organise the team, he ain't a captain. Admittedly in the second half he played a lot better (could he have played any worse) but if Nigel doesn't replace him as captain and as a first teamer he will lose the fans.

The midfield. Wow, woeful. For all the good JCR did helping back, which was nice, he did next to naff all going forward. Once he beats a man, he wants to beat him again. Sometimes it's best to just swing a cross in Jam, what ya reckon? Basham and Baxter simply aren't good enough as a 2 in midfield. We NEED a Hammond in there. Somebody who can coach them through the game. Or maybe even someone like Garvan who for some reason is playing at Colchester... We could've and should've had him.

Woolford was awful and I hold my hands up - I was very wrong, we haven't got nearly enough to replace Murphy. If Che is injured we're playing with 10 men. 1.5 mil sitting in the bank, SPEND IT FFS. I'd take that Harriot who they had yesterday on loan from Charlton every day of the week.

Less said bout Sammon the better.

Sharp for me, although he missed chances at least he's actually showing for the ball and wanting it. It's more than I can say for the others. He's getting the positions and working the chances for himself, missing a few but it'll come. He has to start with McNulty because we aren't going to beat Bradford in the air with Sammon or Higdon because one is 6 foot plus and nesh, the other can't jump.

We need 4 new players at least and a new capain or we aren't going up.
I apologise if that upsets people but I try to say it like it is, not sugar coat it for friendly reading.

I believe Nigel can do it, the thing is - can the board?

Sharp had a decent game where he was involved in most of our good play in the second half but his finishing badly let him down. He carried the ball quite well, was closing down their defenders and got a goal and an assist. Yes he missed 3 very good chances which he should have buried but at least he's getting those chances and in time he will be burying them on a regular basis if we stick with him and support him.

The others which aren't good enough to command a starting shirt each week are:

McEveley - no viable replacement with Harris out. Wallace is okay but not good enough.
Collins - done okay of late but not the answer long term and should be back up.
JCR - been in very good form so far this season but we all know he has patches. He shouldn't be
first choice and should be an impact player.

Basham - not commanding enough in the middle.
Baxter - too inconsistent.
Woolford - way off the pace, good squad option but not a first choice player.
Sammon - doesn't and won't score enough.
Adams - play him upfront and I'd say he's good enough to be first choice. Not on the wing though as he isn't a winger!

I said we needed another four or five players at the start of the season. Here we are in mid September, and nothing's changed. We're seeing exactly why we need those players, although a run of wins clouded the reality for many.

Adkins' determination to be Mr Nice Guy and a board who couldn't know any less about football has seen us fail to do what any competent, ambitious club with our expectations would have done. Instead we've stuck to the Sheffield United method of rewarding piss poor players, doing the bare minimum and hoping for the best.

After five years at this level you might have thought they'd detect when it's there for the taking and act accordingly, but they just seem to have no idea.

billy is suffering because he is a fan of the club.. i'm skeptical if this ever works. he is simply trying too hard.. he looked shattered at the end and you could tell it meant a lot to him. he is trying to carry the whole team by himself.. billy just chill mate.. pretend to yourself that you are just playing at scunny for the money.. you need to take the pressure off yourself.. you can't win the game by yourself. (but you gave it a good try)..
baxter would have missed anyway

Honestly can you see anyone who started last night being good enough for The Championship if we somehow get promotion this season?

Put Hammond in our midfield and we look like a totally different team. It really is that simple, we have to get someone of his ability/stature. It has to be our number one priority. I'd also love to see McNulty and Sharp together up top, not sure how that would work once Adams is back in the team though.

Not sure what to think after two consecutive POOR home defeats, but I was worried back against Chesterfield when we gave them practically the freedom of Bramall Lane at times. But for Howard we'd have probably thrown a two goal lead away.
Peter-boring away didn't reassure either. It was a mix of our strikers having an on day and Posh looking like the mid-table side that they are.

But if the manner of losing, shipping 6 goals and not looking interested at times doesn't wake Positive Nige up to the fact that alot of our first XI are making a mugging of SUFC then I don't know what will.

Saying that, we'll probably go the Bradford on Sunday and win and it'll be "kick on from here" until the next time our back four forgets what their jobs are..

By the way, hi everyone, first post on the forum.

UTB.

Putting Hammond in doesn't suddenly make Woolford, Sammon, McEverley, Collins, Baxter, Basham, Howard, Long, Reed, Flynn, Higdon, Scougall, McFazdean, McGahey and Alcock good players.

Ah so we're also picking on people like Flynn and Reed now? And McGahey, the young kid that isn't even involved?

And you know full well what I meant. Any team with a weak midfield will look poor and struggle.

Not picking on anyone. They are all just not good enough for a promotion winning side.

You can't possibly know if McGahey will be good enough or not. Reed also, shouldn't be looked at as not good enough for promotion - He's 18, he isn't supposed to be a first team player at that age.

It's hard to try and be objective after such a ridiculous display but the OP isn't too far off in my opinion.

Aside from Freeman (class by the way) there aren't many others who can hold their hands up and get away without criticism. I can forgive JCR, he's a winger and inconsistent but is positive - even if it doesn't come off all the time.

McEveley wasn't as bad last night but needs replacing. Ditto for Collins. But we knew about these two last year. We STILL haven't solved it.

Bash and Baxter don't work as a pair for me. I like Baxter a lot but I'm not convinced by him in a two man midfield. Basham should partner Edgar.

Sammon was woeful. Statuesque almost. What happened to the harrying and physical presence we saw before?!
Sharp tried hard but guilty of missing too many easy chances.

Woolford? Gash. Worst player on the pitch. Nesh, slow, immobile, not sure what he offers?!

We miss Ché. Can't wait for Done to be back either.

My lineup for Bradford would be

Howard

Freeman Edgar Basham McEveley

Flynn K-Wallace (Erm...fuck! Hurry back J-Wallace!) JCR

McNulty Sharp

People are over rating Done all of a sudden. He's probably not good enough for the Championship either, certainly not on the wing. Any players we have who'd be good enough for the Championship would still be bottom end Championship players. Only Adams has the potential to be more. We'll just have to worry about this if we actually go up, because we've got enough of a job on getting out of this division first. We've been here five years, we can't be wasting another one. We need more quality, even if they're all on loan, even if they're just good League One players. But I suspect the absolute mismanagement from Clough's time at the club will prevent us from paying out too much more in wages in due to FFP.

Overrated or not Ricky, can't wait to see him back in the team. As to whether he would be good enough, I suspect he, like most of the others mentioned, will be long gone by the time we ever grace the Championship again. ;)

For me they can all go apart from Adams, Done and JCR.
Hopefully Brayford will make a difference on return.

The squad's too old, too lethargic, hasn't got the vibrancy of youth about it (something that Colchester had in spades last night).
It's got an old man's "fearing to do things wrong" vibe about it, rather than a young man's "devil-may-care, let me try things & see if they'll work" type of an attitude.

We're stuffed to the gills with "over-experienced" players.

Of the more experienced players, it's difficult to fault Howard (who's started the season great) & Billy (who's making himself chances, even if he's not finishing them as yet). I'd add JCR in to that very short list too (yeah he had an off night last night, but he constantly tries to make things happen & he puts in a real defensive shift). Other than that it's the injured quality - Beard, Done - & the youngsters - Freeman, Che, Reedy - that offer hope.

Burn (fingers crossed) for Collins; KWallace for JayMac; Reedy for Basham; Che for Woolford; Sparky for Sammon are the changes I'd make. And I'd be looking to get two (youngish) central midfielders in on loan, sharpish, too.
