Who’s the best player in history that ‘got us over the line’

For me this is players like, Hanson, Madine, Stearman etc. who if you saw them in Sheffield you’d probably tell them “we wouldn’t of gone up without you” but everyone knew they had to move on at the end of a successful season.

The one that springs to mind is Glynn Hodges..

But he played a few more seasons, and was loved..

Somebody without a hangover can coreect me if i'm wrong, but the cross for Deane in front of the kop against Port Vale was something only he could have done, that was the day we looked at each other and we thougt we were gonna do it, and go up..

Does that same list include Scott hogan ?

We signed hodges in the first division, he didn't get us up, and never put a cross in against port Vale for Deane

If I'm understanding the point of the OP, then we're asking about players that we signed during the season (pre transfer windows) or in the January transfer window that improved us and gave us that extra push to get us promoted.
The Glyn Hodges example was different and it could be argued that his signing greatly contributed to us staying up in the great escape season of 1990-91.

A couple spring to my mind.
Colin Morris - we bought him for £100k from Blackpool I think around October/November and it proved to be a brilliant signing as he supplied the ammunition for Edwards and Hatton in 1981-82.

Glenn Cockerill - think we bought around March 1984 again for about £100k from Lincoln and another brilliant signing in 1983-84.

I know the OP said Hanson in that L1 season but I'll also put forward Jay O'Shea in that same time.

Came on loan in Jan, took the load off Duffy when he was getting man marked out of games, chipped in with a few goals. Wasn't good enough for the next level so buggered off to Bury afterwards.

Bob Booker
Bassett signed a number of players during the 1988-89 season that helped our promotion push. Off the top of my head, there was also John Gannon and Steve Thompson.
If I remember correctly, Booker was signed after Webster broke his leg at Mansfield in the FA Cup, and of course he was not the popular cult figure he became, at first.

Shipperly ?
I'd say the opposite was true with Shipperley.
We started the 2005-06 season really well with Shipperley up front, holding the ball up to allow our runners to join attacks. Then Warnock had a brainfart and decided to sign Akinbiyi and Horsfield to replace Shipperley and our form badly dipped. Fortunately he realised his mistake and restored Shipperley, I think the 3-0 win against Southampton was the game he started and he remained in the side from that point.

He absolutely did. Good days at BDTBL. Loved the DB years
Met BB - a top, top man and very humble

Well as there were no transfer windows at the time we signed cockerill, Morris or hodges then they are irrelevant, the January transfer window only came in in 2003, you are mentioning players we signed in the 80s and 90s so they are irrelevant to the OP

We didn't sign Hodges until the following season.

He made an almost instant impact. Although his first appearance was in a 2-0 defeat at Manchester City, we then had a 9 game unbeaten run, starting with a home match against Derby in which he scored a late winner. He then followed that up with another goal in the 4-1 demolition of Southampton. I think it was at that point that we (almost miraculously) climbed out of the relegation places.

I felt he played a significant part in that 9 game unbeaten run that pulled us comfortably clear of the relegation places.

Iliman N’Diaye had the most glaring single influence on us getting promoted in 2022/23, that I’ve ever seen in over 50 years, he carried the team with his performances, goals and assists like no one before or since.

Albeit that we didn’t sign him in January as per the OP……… my fault for not reading the post 🤦🏻‍♂️
