I think our players have missed fans more than most they really were like an extra man certainly didn’t get that atmosphere at the other prem clubs we went to

If I remember correctly (it's getting harder!) Long fucked up a couple of times against Exeter and some "Blade" shouted "Long, just fuck off" during the next home game and he definitely heard it.
I had to be restrained. How the hell is it going to help?

They weren’t idiots. Chris Wilder took a very quick look at George Long at the start of 2016-17 and made a great decision (as with (Chris Hussey). Enter Simon Moore and promotion.

Whether Wilder was right to get rid of Long isn't the point. How can shouting 'fuck off' to your own goalkeeper during a game possibly help? If he is low on confidence how is that going to make him perform better?

They were idiots for abusing him.

I think I recall after one game some fan running down the Kop screaming 'You ******* c****' at George Long.

I once hit my thumb with a lump hammer whilst doing some DIY. It hurt like fuck, and I shouted YOU CUUUUUUUUUUUUNT at the top of my voice. Did it help the situation? Not one bit. But it was a normal human reaction to the situation.

Believe it or not, passionate football fans aren't always going to be nice to players who aren't playing well, whether it helps the situation or not.

There is research that suggests that swearing etc helps reduce the intensity of your own pain. But swearing at other people does not help them. It may be for some people a natural reaction, but it does not do any good.

It never will,if anything it makes it even harder for the lad .Being a goalie even more so.

I normally don’t tell people how to act, as experience suggests that it rarely makes any difference; I hope that pointing things out occasionally makes people think about what they do. But since you ask, the answer to your question is ‘no’. I would like people to be very noisy in their support, to put pressure on opposition players and referees, etc. As you say football is about passion and emotion - if I had been in my right mind aged 6, I would probably have taken up stamp-collecting if I was choosing an activity that was stress -free. Supporting the Blades is not very sensible, but is part of our identity. I see no harm in shouting at players not prepared to put in effort, or who are stupidly reckless, and at managers who appear to do things to annoy us, but abusing players who make honest mistakes seems wrong to me on so many levels. Abuse has become easier as the players have become richer than the rest of us, but they are still human. And being shouted at for making a mistake is rarely the first step to improvement.

Even when we do win, I can't enjoy them as much since I am not there or fans are not there.
