Silly question - Do teams insure their players? In the NHL, teams have an option to buy insurance on their players. If a player suffers and injury, the insurance company pays the salary for said player. Is this something that football teams can do?

There will always be a company that will let you make a badly priced bet on something happening

Yes of course there is. Clubs and players both get paid out if they have to retire through injury.

I believe if a player was to come out of an enforced retirement then they would have to pay back any settlement however playing non league football is ok

I vaguely remember a case of a player being paid out, then recovering, but only being able to play non-league otherwise he’d have to repay his pay-out. Can’t remember who it was though.

I guess what I am getting at - did insurance pick up Berge's salary when out injured or is it if he had to retire due to injury they would pay?

Same here I googled it but all I got was NFL players

Are you thinking we could take McBurnie and Berge down a deserted lane and ‘torch them’……….sounds like a plan? 🤣

They’ll be a market at Lloyd’s for it, I’m sure.

They just pay an agreed value on retirement due to injury. They won’t be paying wages whilst people are crocked. Insurance companies aren’t daft.

This is true and happened to someone I work with. He had a fairly promising career and played for Barnsley and Rotherham a few times as well as representing England at youth level. However he had a bad knee injury and could only keep the pay out if he never played League football again. He had a few seasons at Ilkeston before packing up completely.

I heard this about Mike marsh. He’d play for whoever won the conference each year (or so it seemed) then dropped back to the conference when they were a league club.

Edit: just seen you add the next post
