Apparently this was the home of the first ever league goal scored by Bolton winger Kenny Davenport at 3.47pm on 8th September 1888. Gordon Taylor has suggested a plaque should be erected to mark this historical occasion. In those days kick offs varied (not something new then) and the referee stood on the touchline and acted both as a timekeeper and an arbitrator between the two umpires, one supplied by each team, when they could not agree. And you wondered where Paddy Power thought their ad up from (referee of referees)! Bolton played at Pikes Lane until 1895. It later became terraced housing.
It was also the venue of United's worst ever defeat in a FA Cup game on February 1st 1890 as Dazza pointed out a few weeks ago when discussing horrendous Blades results of our time. We lost 13-0.
Perhaps we should have a plaque too and memorial service!
