I live abroad and have worked all around the world for the past 30 years. When asked 'Where you from" I answer "Sheffield", the response 95% of the time is "Ah, are you Sheffield United?", no mention of Sheffield Steel and definitely not the S6 lot. That being the case I'd say that The Blades are the bigger and more Famous Sheffield Football Club! ---- Up your PIPE Deluded Ones!

Always been my experience too "Ahhh Sheffield United.....Yes ?" when I tell them I'm from Sheffield
What they say first is the real acid test and not waiting to hear who you support and then saying "Ahh yes I always prefer United to Wendy"

That is just them being polite, and should be taken with a pinch of salt. But of course Wendies are already preconditioned to believe it

United are punching way above their weight this season. Their fans know it can’t last.

The stars have aligned so far for them, a mediocre league, penalty decisions, and, playing teams out of form.

I’d be very surprised if they got promoted.

And to cap it all - 3rd in the Division and all the interest now falls on S6.

They will always be Bridesmaids, I’m afraid.

Not a glamorous Club.

It’s like putting lipstick on a pig. Not trying to be clever - it’s just a good analogy.

They will never be out of our shadow.

I'd agree with most of that and I suspect most pig fans would too but they'd never admit it. They have the upper hand at the moment, which is why they're gobby, but like you said, we all know it's not going to last. As Wednesday fans we can all help shorten their turn in the driving seat

They lost in a PO final when it was La Liga, spent millions on players and wages and are now shit in an apparently shit league but can’t see the irony in it all. They really are a special in-breed.

To be fair Sean, I think we need to be humble here and acknowledge the brilliance of the likes of Hull City, Huddersfield and Brighton in overcoming the other superior quality teams in the Championship back then. Obviously Leeds, Norwich and Sheffield United could never hope to live with them. Derby County, West Brom, Middlesboro and Aston Villa similarly could never hope to compete either. We need to cling to the hope that the massives will save this hopelessly impoverished League from impending oblivion.

I like the adjective 'relentless', wish I'd thought of that , it's very apt.

All seems very childish to ring up and call someone a name and then put the phone down.

I remember in Birmingham in the 1970's there was a guy called Tony Butler who did a football phone in on BRMB radio.

In October 1976 Villa played a 'friendly' against Rangers at Villa Park.

Typically Rangers brought down thousands and there was violence in the city and in the ground. All typical 1970's. The referee had to abandon the game after 53 minutes as the violence had become that bad.

That evening Tony Butler was doing his normal phone in asking Villa fans for their reaction to the days' events.

This one Villa fan phones and speaking something like Arthur Shelby tells 'Tone' that his brother had got a right kicking from the Rangers fans. Tony Butler passes on his best wishes and asks him what is he going to do now.

Villa fan says 'It's alright Tone I've got a Rangers fan in the phone box with me and he's about to get same as my brother.'

Tony Butler screams 'No, no think of the Villa'.

'Fuck the Villa' and the phone went dead.

Now most people after the show were more concerned about the swearing on live radio than the outcome of the Rangers fan.

That was a proper phone-in.

That has also been my experience around the World, with the response to my answer of being from Sheffield always is "Sheffield United"!

Norwich and Ipswich are probably the exception to the rule because they both hate us for some reason, but talking face to face even most of them would say they prefer Man Utd rather than City if talking to Man Utd fans, Arsenal instead of Tottenham If talking to Arsenal supporters

It's just what people do, depending on who they're talking to, most people think why rock the boat with a supporter of a club that I don't give two fucks about

The Norwich fan by the way, you should have kicked him in the bollocks

I actually went to his wedding after having moved away three years previously, so we’re mates, like. Still talk to him about football. I spoke to him after the Wigan game and he didn’t seem overly confident for the rest of the season. Injury concerns etc.

Interestingly/ironically, I asked him why there always seems to be so much stoppage time at Norwich games and he said it’s because teams seem to start time wasting against them from the tenth minute.

Playing football the Norwich way...

again its your definition of racism
to me racism is a hatred of people , or an unwillingness to accept them
as Ive tried to explain , we didnt know of them as there werent any in our lives
how could I be racist to people I never came across
You seem like a person who dislikes people for no reason other than not being aware of things

thats a form of racism on your part

shame on you for being so judgemental

Calling me racist as that’s what I’ve called you (we’ll actually you admitted it yourself). Sounds like the same level as someone phoning up a radio station and calling someone a ‘paedo’ for a laugh. I’ll laugh it off like Wilder will probably laugh the radio caller off. It’s better than false outrage.

no you called me a racist , I said we said things back then that are now classed as racist as theres context to it we didnt have back then
how do you laugh off paedophelia by the way

amazing how you think calling someone black in the seventies is racist but can shrug off kiddie fiddling as a laugh

need a new needle on your moral compass

Not sure if I interpreted that correctly, but have blades been accused of being complicit in the death of Dave Jones' father?
Wow......

Yeah I read that the same way.

They can add it to our criminal records.

Kidney punching x ∞

ABH (wheelchair users)

Tony Butler was an absolute legend apparently, Jasper Carrott mentioned some of his antics in one or two of his stories

no you called me a racist , I said we said things back then that are now classed as racist as theres context to it we didnt have back then
how do you laugh off paedophelia by the way

amazing how you think calling someone black in the seventies is racist but can shrug off kiddie fiddling as a laugh

need a new needle on your moral compass

Wilder isn’t a kiddy fiddler though, you are talking rubbish for a change. A grown man called him a ‘paedo’, presumably because he has serious personal issues. I find it childish and quite hilarious that a grown man would be that bitter and twisted about Wilder that he would do this on a radio phone in. Therefore I am treating it with hilarity and not outrage.

In your strange world if this is me condoning paedophilia then knock yourself out pal.

Debating a point with you is like arguing with a child, in fact my 3 year old gives more coherent arguments.

A few years ago I went on a couple of overland trips to South America, taking in big chunks of Brazil, Argentina and Bolivia. You obviously talk about where you're from, and with it being South America, football was a good icebreaker. People who had heard of Sheffield, which quite a few had, especially in Argentina, ALWAYS said "Sheffield United" in relation to football, NEVER Wendy.

They are racist insults now as we have designated them as such now . The term paki came from cricket tours and Brian Close referred to them all the time as pakis . But it was just an abbreviation but is now considered highly offensive . Just a different time
No, it was offensive then, it's always been offensive, even when it was"ok" for dinosaurs like Brian Close to use it!!!!

I'm incoherent . Yet you judge people incessantly with your own pre conceptions.
Indignant about things to Be decided in your head .like calling me a racist
Your logic is heavily flawed . Your assumptions are totally wrong . Consult with your 3 year old
They can see without judging

We're you around then . Did you ever see it .

You weren’t. You’d never seen anyone black you said. I went to junior school with black kids. The handful of kids who used the insulting names invariably ended up in a fight. We all knew it was wrong, even if people said such things.

Your view appears to be it was alright then because it was a different time. I take it then that if times hadn’t changed you’d be quite happy using the n or p word.

The reason things are taking so long to change is less to do with open racists and far more to do with the ignorant.

But to be fair, I think United are punching above their weight.

And I'm in good company, because so does Tufty, and he's managing them.

And it can't last, because as great a manager as he is, Wilder can't keep pulling rabbits out of hats forever.

When United are on form, as they've been of late, I'd fancy them against anyone in this division.

But it's when they're not playing well that that extra bit of magic is required.

All the talk at the moment is about the jiggery pokery at Hillsborough, but for me this is a make-or-break window for the Blades.

This board simply must back Wilder, or a glorious chance will be missed.

We don't want a Wilko scenario to materialize, and at the moment it's got Wilkinson written all over it..

We are punching above our weight financially, however we are 3rd in the league on merit this season, the defensive and attacking stats back this up. You are where you are based on merit (i’d actually say that the last few games results have put you in a better position than you should be in based on performances across the season) but financially you are punching much below your weight and that is why it rankles so much with many of the little grunters.

As a result grown men are losing the plot and going on the radio and calling our manager childish names. I just hope you can stock up on cabbages as you might be needing them once Brucey has had his month off and bothered to turn up and manage you.
