An incredibly reasoned and balanced post.I was a fan who didn't mind Forest as a Football club, not old enough to remember and wasn't here to experience the politics of the 70s/80s, but respected their history as an unfancied, provincial club who had two European cups to their name which was a real achievement from a Football point of view. Obviously knew about Brian Clough and what an enigma and a genius of a manager he was in that era. I thought it was an inspiring tale.
I was old enough to remember the 4-3 play-off game of 2003. One of the most exciting games ever played on the Bramall Lane turf, and one I'll always remember as a young Blade in that era. Two attacking teams that went toe to toe and produced a rollercoaster of a Football game. One of my good friends from my uni days was a Forest fan - he was a good lad.
I'd be directly accused of sour grapes, or having said all I am about to say just because we didn't make it - but that genuinely doesn't come into the equation. That's Football, play-offs are a lottery, and so are the penalties. We've all seen enough Football to know that's the game, as beautiful as it is, it is also a cruel one. Forest played well Saturday, they deserved to win here and could and most people here acknowledge they should have ended the tie before tonight. Poor finishing and Wes pulling saves out of the mire kept us in the game along with Sander's goal. We played out of our skins tonight with the odds stacked against us, but we didn't lose this tonight, we lost it at the weekend with the defensive errors that led to their goals.
However, tonight for me Forest lost any respect I might have had for them. The behaviour and attitude of their players, Brennan Johnson shushing our fans when he scored, the midfielder (can't remember) who was goading our fans at the end. The away fans at the weekend who thought the tie was over at 2-0 up. The idiots who threw the flares onto the bottom tier at the Lane. The large number of their fans who immediately went running towards the away end forgetting about their Wembley prize, but immediately focusing on winding up our fans. The brainless idiot tonight who carried out the blindsided, cowardly assault on Sharp tonight, well that just caps it off. That could have been really nasty for Billy. This fool needs a lifetime ban x 10.
The idea of any petition is ridiculous, of course you can't deny them their prize because of one thugs actions in the case of Sharp. Every club has its fools. The reasons I'm angry are nothing to do with the Football itself, but it was the behaviour, the attitude and the arrogance of a good number of their fans on Saturday and tonight, and the conduct of some their players at times. It's no wonder Heckingbottom lost it with Spence, and we know it's not like Hecky to lose it out there. He's the coolest customer we've had in charge for many a year. Perhaps he shouldn't have reacted how he did too, but the provocation was definitely there. he's only human. To be fair to Steve Cooper as well - he's handled it all pretty coolly I think. He's proven he is a good manager and he's done as good a job as Heckingbottom has with us. I've no beef with him.
So no, no petitions. Forest deserve to go through even though we ran them very close, and we had enough chances tonight to win the tie before penalties. But for all the above reasons, I do genuinely hope Huddersfield bring them crashing back down to earth in a couple of weeks time.
I know only a couple, couple being used lightly. One of them us Forest through and through, goes to all their games and we do have good jokesI work with a few obnoxious Florist fans, I was going to buy a Huddersfield Town shirt...Then I realised
An excellent post, but as you say Forest should not be tarnished by a few of their fans anymore than we should by a few of our idiots.I was a fan who didn't mind Forest as a Football club, not old enough to remember and wasn't here to experience the politics of the 70s/80s, but respected their history as an unfancied, provincial club who had two European cups to their name which was a real achievement from a Football point of view. I've got a beef with Steve Cooper, it's his team and they're definitely a team who likes the dark arts a bit too much for my liking.I was a fan who didn't mind Forest as a Football club, not old enough to remember and wasn't here to experience the politics of the 70s/80s, but respected their history as an unfancied, provincial club who had two European cups to their name which was a real achievement from a Football point of view.
