Another game goes by where questions can reasonably be asked as to whether or not the performance was ‘good enough’.

We have found ourselves in a (very good) habit of not playing particularly well, but still picking up points.

Question is, which is more important?
 

Today was a good performance because we did what we had to do and won the three points.

What people actually mean when they say it was a bad performance is that it wasn't entertaining.

I think a lot of people had a preconceived story in their heads today of us blowing Plymouth away 5-0.

That's where the disappointment comes from.

Even more interesting is that discussion has been going on for how long now? And we’re 5 points clear of 3rd. We’re just very spectacularly unspectacular this season, and I’m all for it.

I’m greedy about this subject matter though, so I want both. I don’t think it’s a lot to ask, given the talent available. Loads of clever, technical players.

I do think we’ll “click” soon.

Patience required for now.

Squad hasn’t been together all that long. Several of them playing first team football (at this level) for the first time.

I do keep seeing flashes of genuine brilliance. Even today. The key is to find level that consistently.

It will come.

For now we’ll just have to be happy beating everyone while playing ugly. 😉
 
The age old question. Would I rather we lose 4-3 or grind out a 1-0 or 2-0 win. Yes, performances are important and might eventually bite us in the arse. But we've got 45(47) points from 21 games, if we havent yet got out of 2nd or 3rd gear, fantastic. We can only get better. lets also think, thats 3 games in 6 days, there was always going to be a fall off. We are a results machine at the moment. I will take it all day long.
 
Its not an easy question to answer as clearly most would love both. Entertaining football with positive results. I fell out of love with international football due to the complete lack of entertainment from England since 1990.

United have produced both brilliance and mediocrity in equal measure, today being a prime example. I fully support both camps argument and I don't think it's unfair to air on the side of craving excitement or results. Most of us sit somewhere in the middle I'd guess.

My only concern is stumbling towards promotion, the first with wilder was amazing and combined stoicism and entertainment but a level of nievety towards expectations after promotion. I think it's safe to know exactly what we will face next season should we achieve promotion. The current style of play and personel does worry me as I just don't see a level of athleticism or control that's transferable to the Premier league across most positions. I am proud and enjoying the uptake in results but feel huge trepidation should it continue.

Clearly things may change but Wilders promotion felt more cohesive and fluent then Heckys. And that's what I felt we took into the promotion.

Except the expression is usually I'd rather WIN 4-3 than a bland 1-0 win. Today Blades deserved nothing more than a draw so to get 2-0 is exceptional. Gus was tremendous today and his performance was cemented with one of best goals ever at The Lane.
 
Obviously results, but at the same time I think we're all hoping to see us build a team and squad with a real identity and a good playing style. We can't neglect it if performances aren't showing enough of that.

We're solid at the back and have a fantastic keeper. Going forward we look reliant on Hamer's quality, goals and assists. His importance are starting to resemblance that of Ndiaye's in our promotion season. Three of our starters are loans. If we add more in January, hopefully they'll be players we could be able to keep/sign.

I think there's reason to be optimistic about our future, but we don't want 2023/24 repeated. Building, developing, improving should always be in our thoughts, not just "bouncing back".
 
It seems the oppositions have done thier homework. Double team Rak-Sakyi, pressure Ohare and Hamer to make mistakes, put a man in the huge gap between strikers and midfield. Still can not understand why Hamer and Rak-Sakyi aren't continually swapping sides causing confusion. We are very rigid in our set up and very slow, mostly, with the ball. I get the passing around the back to draw teams more forward but when they aren't biting there seems to be one plan...hoof it forward.
Defensively we are phenomenal but offensively average. If we attack as well as we defend we'll crush teams. Maybe it takes longer to get the balance than we all hoped.
I guess we all want our cake and eat it to....just like every team wants.

Nail on the head.
The question should be that can we maintain these mediocre performances and still expect positive results?
If we maintain this level of performances we will probably get found out and teams will realise that we're beatable.
They will take a more positive approach when playing us.

This.

We are having a huge streak of luck at the moment. Teams are not punishing us, we're making vital challenges/saves, getting decisions and we're somehow consistently finding goals.

At some stage our luck is going to run out and unless we improve our performances we will start dropping points. Our midfield has been poor for weeks. We've let teams play through us and have far too much space/time to create chances. Balls have not been sticking upfront and the defence has been too exposed.
 
Bit of a daft poll and a poll for sake of it, it seems.

Points will always Trump performance...

Can play like prime real Madrid/ Barcelona but doesn't matter at the end of the match if you havnt score or won.

As we came down with no identity at all, and gutted the squad, it's basically impossible to do it in a season from a standing start (whilst ensuring you get results).

Ideal for us would have been a few years down here building that team and style - but that's impossible to do without losing the players you'd want to keep and be part of it.

So I reckon we're doing it, but we're so thin that at times we just can't do it. Will still be a massive WiP if we go up.
 
Anyone who prefers performances than points should stop attending football matches and start attending Circus shows instead!

When you coach and manage, you look to performances and consistency of performances that will, mostly, but not always cos that’s football and that’s life, dictate results.

It’s not the other way around!!

Todays result will please the manager but the performance will not. He will understand that those levels will need to rise, and for some individuals significantly so if we are to maintain our lofty position.

It’s unrealistic to expect the goalie and defence to continue this remarkable run of shut outs. It’s just bound to fall off at some point.

It’s a terrific run we are on and long may it continue but a few have got to roll up their sleeves and give more.

Agree with the base sentiment. We can't rely on defense to get us out of jail all the time.

But then, it was the 3rd game in 6 days, there's only so far the sleeves can get rolled up. Add into it injuries to form players, and those who came in just returning from injury, and it's a bit of a perfect storm for being off it.

Let me think for a while and study......

Do I want us to sometimes look disjointed but keep winning points so we finish in the top 2
or do I want us to play well every game and finish mid table? Surely there's only one obvious answer.

However they do say performances are an indicator of future results so normally a team can't continue to be underpar but keep winning
but this rule is not applicable to us because

1: We have a consistently great defence + keeper, so even at our worse we're still almost gauranteed a draw and
2: We have some top quality individuals who can create/ score a goal from nothing.

Basically even at our worse.....at this level...we're going to win loads of matches 1-0 or 2-0.
The only concern is that we're not exactly putting down building blocks to perform in the PL, but we'll cross that bridge if and when we get there.
 
I guess after last season, the point about performances vs points is that we have good team on the up / improving that will compete next year. Otherwise it's just miserable, and that's an understatement.

I see it time after time where people are crucified for saying they don't want to go up. This is why. We need to show something regarding a team that is on the up and will continue to improve - we had it the 'first' time around as we were a wild card with the tactics.

I am in the camp that thinks that, given the turnover, we are over achieving with the players we have (on the manager, the team ethic and a bit of luck). The performances do cause worry without millions being invested (and that won't happen). Whilst this is great in the here and now, I just feel this is the Hecky season repeated. Modern Prem Football I guess.
