Performance of the season

I must admit, I was worried before the game this evening, despite the performance on Sunday, I just felt that things were starting to go against us and was convinced it'd be another match where we would be saying "if only".

Despite that ridiculous decision that went for us (that's two this season and how many against?), I thought we took it up another notch from Sunday's performance. We looked more solid, organised and fitter.

As I am sure has been said elsewhere on the forum, Ben Osborn slotted in seamlessly and was excellent. I had no qualms with him coming in at all, he has been solid whenever he has played and is Mr Dependable; even so, to play so well in your first ever Premier League start and against Spurs, is commendable.

I think Andrew (AKA Roygbiv ) said on the BladesPod, we will only get better as the 'season' progresses and I truly believe that. Looking back, we have generally been slow starters to the season and have always struggled following an international break. I think that the way we play requires games time and time on the training pitch, as it is based on such fine margins.

There's still room for improvement, but we are still missing our two best players and our biggest surprise package of the season.

Burnley was a good performance but we had a full side out and were on a good run of form. Spurs away was probably the most complete performance where we played them off the park but thanks to VAR creating a new rule regarding the second phase we lost two points. Man United at Home for 70 minutes was the best we had played this season.

Yet in terms of performance taking into account all the factors I listed tonight was the best because it lifted a cloud over the Club in terms of players, fans and Managers confidence that we were still capable of producing the efforts of the first 28 games.

No -one is conforming to any Agenda on this forum the simple fact is and has been for the last three years the post match comments of opposition fans have in the main referred to the fact their team didn't perform well as the reason why they lost to SUFC. Recognition has mainly centred on our work rate, shape effort etc etc. Tonight we scored 3 well crafted goals with flowing passing movements yet you can guarantee the papers will be full of us outworking the opposition and the disallowed VAR goal rather than references to our technical ability or the tactical acumen of Chris Wilder and Alan Knill. Thats fact not an agenda or small team mentality. It is consistent with how the majority of the media and pundits have reported on us this season and is open to challenge.

Manchester United was another performance that was better than tonight.
I was actually more impressed with the character shown to equalise than the 3-0 lead.

Our two best players are out injured another key one Lundstram is sidelined and Flecks natural replacement is also out. We've just had our worst period of the season where we haven't won for four games. The pundits are knocking us telling us we told you you're seasons gone, the fans are frustrated because the energy levels and commitment for the first 28 games haven't been there. Players are out of form and confidence levels are low. Even the Manager is questioning what has gone wrong. Spurs are one of our main challengers for a Euro spot.

All that is why tonights performance is the performance of the season because despite all the set backs, despite our paper thin squad we've made a team full of expensive International players look second best.

Then again as a supporter of another EPL team we are used to the post match jibe the opposition obviously didn't turn up because they were playing Sheffield United.

If we’re going to be subjected to your tiresome opinions with no end in sight, could you get the factual basis for your spurious opinions correct. We weren’t 3-0 up at any stage, we went from 2-0 up to 3-2 down in short order and equalised.

Who are these people blaming all of those things (in fact any one of them singly) for our failure to finish top 4? I don’t think there are any, I think you’re making stuff up. Most people I know are thrilled we’ve survived and done much better than we dared hope.

The 3 goals we scored last night were basically Wilder's style personified. Came from wide, intricate passing, players swapping positions/overloads, scored from within 12 yards. You love to see it

Something I picked up last night was that Spurs, with all their pace, never had a chance to get in behind us.

In the games against Man U and Newcastle both teams caused us loads of problems by exploiting the gaps we left through our overloading when attacking, by hitting early balls into the gaps and using the pace of their front men to get behind our midfield and defenders (and I appreciate that we were down to 10 men against Newcastle). Last night was completely different even though I think they set-up to do exactly the same to us with the 3 up top. Now it may well be that Spurs weren't good enough to do the same or simply that the way they actually played pushed us back so the spaces weren't there to exploit but I'd rather think that CW/AK had picked up on this from the previous games and have slightly tweaked how we played, thus completely nullifying the threat. It started against Arsenal who also played loads of pace up top and we stopped them doing it but last night was much better.

Well done CW/AK. Who says they only have one game plan and can't change it.

No where near the best performance....it was just average....when we’re back to our standards.
To be honest the weather played a part....in the hit sun we can‘t put in the same intensity.

Also Spurs looked pretty poor but we made them look that way.

Given the circumstances - several key players injured, in our worst run of form of the season, fans starting to lose faith - it is definitely up there. We haven't scored 3 in many matches this season.

Overall though I can't look past Man U or Burnley at home, neither of whom could live with us.
