Penalty!

Had an outing from the kop to family stand today.

Made a nice change and the child I brought seemed the thoroughly enjoy herself.

From there the penalty ooked like a good shout but not sure if it was a "stonewaller" anyone get a better view?

What I did notice, was that Ched really wanted to take it.....but Billy Sharp, captain, was never going to let him have it.

Jordan Rhodes should take note.
Great to hear your young un enjoyed herself. Others on here have made the same comment. It would be good for McCabe to have a legacy of a new generation of Blades, and good to know plenty of girls are taking an interest.

Did you notice that the goalie stood still, in case Billy hit it down the middle? The late dive was never gonna get anywhere it in the corner! :-)

Sharpy did brilliantly to get control of the ball and then put himself between the defender.
Only thing the ref got right right all afternoon for me

Looked like a nailed-on penalty to me, however on discussion with the lads in the pub post match they thought it was a soft decision, so who knows. Superbly taken from William Sharp though, he clearly enjoyed scoring in front of the Kop. A big confidence booster for him.

You do have some connection to the child you brought don't you?

Idiotic defending there – Sharp wasn’t really going to get a shot away if the defender held his ground. A reckless, needless challenge – I’d be annoyed had we given away something like that. Still, who cares? Dispatched clinically and we’re into the next round.

I didn't procure a child just to get into John street!

She's been a few times with me before but is really starting to show an interest now. Knows a lot of the players names, asks pertinent questions about the match etc.

As someone who's not a farther I saw another perspective to the whole Ched thing, when having to answer the question of a 12 year old girl..."why did he go to prison"?

It was a relief to be able to gloss over it with "well he appealed and got found not guilty so went to jail for nothing really"

Can't think of any situation where you can go straight through the back of a player, upending him to make contact with the ball legally. The referee had no hesitation and rightly so.

Couldn’t tell from the back of the kop, but having watched it on You Tube, lad clearly gets the ball first but as others have stated technically a Penalty, i’m not that au fait with the rules of the game obviously. I’ll take it

After all of the dire luck and officiating we have had in just recent years I will take whatever decisions go in our favour.

Neither side deserved to lose yesterday but I doubt either wanted a replay either, so had that decision gone against us I wouldn't be too upset today.

Me neither, although wouldn’t mind a good Cup run, but draw on the One Show on BBC. Draw used to be a solemn , serious business on radio on Mondays about mid day

Not sure if it is still true, but in the past the officials for a cup game would also officiate in any the replay. So what does the referee think? 80 minutes gone, very few chances, endless passing sideways, second string players, possibly a midweek night match in Preston in front of six thousand, cold, miserable, pissed off, very pissed off. Oh, here comes a robust challenge. PENALTY. Go on Billy, get it in. You beauty. Feet up in front of the fire a week on Tuesday. Job done.

Thought it was a good tackle I'm not sure why it was given
I said at the time that it was a soft one. Seeing it on tv I can see why it was given. He took the ball but he also tackled from behind and caught billy. I think it’s one of these modern rules that we struggle to get our heads around as for me it wasn’t as bad as the tackle on Ched a few mins after the goal

In fairness to Billy he kind of stayed up right for as long as he could, but I think it fooled the ref

In hindsight, daft tackle to make as long as he kept goal side of Billy. But it was a soft one

I think most refs would give it though
