Before last night, when did we last win one? Seems like an absolute age.

I was quite amazed to listen as Cresswell, Collins and Monty all stuck their penalties away with ease. Along with Simmo's save in sudden death, that's 4 players that often receive a lot of stick but who delivered under pressure last night. All helps to add to the confidence of the squad.

I think the last one we won was at Shrewsbury in the league cup in 2005-6.

For years we have been consistently shite at penalties (with brief respite's from BT and possibly Jack Lester) and it has often cost us. Perhaps Monty should have been taking them all along!? His was described as 'Unsavable'. Perhaps we would have never have got relegated fromthe Prem had Montihno taken one of the several we wasted!!?

What are you guys on about (with all due respect)?

We win nearly every one we take part in!

Blackburn (FAC QF) Won, Coventry (FAC SF) Won, West Ham (FAC R4) Won, Arsenal (FAC R5) Lost, Shrewsbury (LC R?) Won, Hartlepool (LC R1) Won.

We have an excellent record in penalty shootouts!!!!!

3 others not on your list from competitive games:

Notts County, Zenith Cup, 1991-2: lost
Rushden, FAC, 1999-2000: won
Grimsby, League Cup, 2001-02: lost

I think that's all of them. So that's won 6 lost 3 - pretty good.

I was thinking about this last night. I think our record is 6 wins to 3 losses:

Wins:

16/3/93 Blackburn (FAC)
17/3/98 Coventry (FAC)
21/12/99 Rushden (FAC)
13/2/05 WHU (FAC)
20/9/05 Shrewsbury (LC)
9/8/11 Hartlepool (LC)

Losses

11/9/01 Grimsby (LC)
27/10/04 Watford (LC)
1/3/05 Arsenal (FAC)

Yep, I remember us winning far more than we've lost in recent years.

Ah, forgot Watford in the League Cup, as Darren points out. So it's W6 L4 (if the Zenith Cup is included!)

Fair play Rev and Darren, I couldn't remember any of those but a couple have jogged my memory.

We are certainly better than England at them though!

We also lost to Bristol Rovers on penalties in the 1972 Watney Cup Final.

Our first penalty shoot out was in the 1972 Watney Cup final against Bristol Rovers at Eastville.I was at the match, we drew 0-0 after extra time. Both teams scored all their first six penalty and Rovers scored their 7th before Ted Hemsley had his spot kick saved. I would agree with Patrick Suffaux that we have won more penalty shoot outs over the last 39 years. Watney Cup introduced penalty shoot outs. The first penalty shoot out in the world was after Hull city drew their semi final match against Man U in August 1970 (we lost the other semi to Derby). George Best was the first to score in a penalty shoot out and Denis Law was the first to miss but two Hull players missed theirs (the 2nd one was their keeper, Ian McKechnie) and Man U won the shoot out. Man U lost 4-1 in the final at Derby

Or 6-5 if we include the Watney Cup loss v Bristol Rovers in 1972.

7-6. Our scorers were Woodward, Eddy, Currie (after a retake as the ref adjudged that Sheppard moved out of his line), Colquhoun, Dearden and Scullion

He favours the classic 'Shut your eyes and hope for the best' technique.

To be fair to Monty he hit several of those last Saturday. Only difference was that this was in the middle of the park and they were either touches or passes. His deft touches and aimless ppunts forwards rose quickly and powerfully, but went (forward and) in the direction of noone. He merley used the same tactic and it flew into the top corner!?

Silent, I just love the effortless way you make Darren look like an amateur on this kind of subject. He'll be thumbing though his record books, whereas you just have it all in your head. :-)

I think you'll find that Darren was referring to the number of penalty shootouts we have won (6) and lost (5), not the penalty shootout score in that match.

What he said ^^ I was confused too

If you want another angle on the penalties, or to see Mendez-Laing's effort that hit the cross bar, here you go:

Was disputing a friend’s theory that we were shit at Penalties last night in the boozer, when discussing the Hudds Play off Final (shudder).

I was saying that Huddersfield game was where our record in penalties (good) confronted our record in play offs (bad). The bad (unsurprisingly) overpowered the good and we lost.

In looking for a comprehensive reminder I came across this old thread, which I think is now the most comprehensive record of Blades in penalty shootouts on t’ net.

Not including Zenith Data Systems & Watney Cup penalty shootout defeats (are they official first team games?) our record is Won 7 lost 5

SUFC Penalty shoot out Record
WINS

92/93 Blackburn (FAC)

97/98 Coventry (FAC)

99/00 Rushden (FAC)

04/05 WHU (FAC)

05/06 Shrewsbury (LC)

11/12 Hartlepool (LC)

14/15 West Ham (LC)

Losses

01/02 Grimsby (LC)

04/05 Watford (LC)

04/05 Arsenal (FAC)

11/12 Huddersfield (P.O.)

WITH ZDS /Watney Cup it’s 7-7, I think.

Any advances/ things I’ve missed?

How many of these did you see live/ can you remember?

Wasn’t there a shoot out in one of the Checkatrade games? Seem to recall United lost it?

Had a look and yes indeed, our 6 years in the Johnstone Paint/ Checkatrade was a positive treasure trove of meaningless penalty shoot outs. In the 6 years we 'competed' in the event we were involved in 6 penalty shootouts (won 2, lost 4), ought to be a prize for anyone who saw them all.

I've not included the Watney Cup because I don't believe it was an official first team fixture, but I may well be wrong. All of which undermines my view that we are now 'good at penalty shootouts' but with exception of Play off final I think we've won most of the big ones, (Arsenal in FA Cup was only other big PSO defeat) so I'm kind of still sticking to my ground, though with slightly shakier evidence. Not that anyone else probably gives a toss, but there you have it.
