Can't think of any other player that has made such a lasting impression after just 14 games..

Don't forget poor old Mel Rees. He also made a huge mark on the club in a very short space of time.

But not to take away from the Paul McGrath love in, am also a huge fan of that brief spell and echo all the sentiments expressed above. Brilliant defender.

Ask the Italians in Giants stadium was he any good ( USA ) world cup ,
His reading of the game was what made him so great
The blacknpearl of Inchicore .
Great man great player .

Only 14 games for us? Blimey. Seemed like many more but it was sadly not enough.

Remember him playing against Forest at home up against Van Hoojidonk (sp?) Needless to say I still think he is tucked away in McGraths shorts.

Repeating what a lot have said here but, best Centre Half I've ever seen for us.

Not wanting to take anything away from McGrath (or Mel Rees RIP) but what about Bobby Bobby Booby Davison.
Just 11 games in '92 but it included THAT game at the Pig.

He did come back for a few games two seasons later, but who gives a shit and any excuse to post:

Away at Huddersfield, 0-0 draw, Katchuro hit the post, crap game..... apart from a masterclass by our crocked defender. Huddersfield had two very sharp forwards, one of them a very fast young lad but every time he got the ball an old Irish git was stood in the way. It didn't matter how much they tried to vary it the knackered old washed up player messed things up for them.
What a player.

I was there that day too and Huddersfield didn't get a sniff. I had quite a day that day. After the game I went home and discovered my then wife had supped 3 bottles of wine to herself and I walked out never to return and that same night/next morning, Princess Di got killed.

You're very possessive of your wine then

After the game Bert and H (The Enforcer) went into a pub to kill an hour due to the traffic jams. As soon as Bert walked in every one went silent and looked him up and down... Bert was the only white man in the place.... H immediately strolled up to the pool table and challenged anyone who fancied their chances to a game.
Left about two hours later....

used to go to the gym with H

I've always felt very privileged to have watched Paul McGrath play for us. Made football looks so easy. The only two player's that i can compare to him live are Ruud Gullit (for Chelsea) and Thierry Henry.
Sorry i got a freebie to watch Chelsea play piggies at the sty.

God I hope those nonces stay down. That clip whets the whistle summet rotten.

My first trip to the sty for a blades v pigs. Surely can't be topped. What a memory!

His reading of the game was the best I have ever seen at the Lane. It was like the ball followed him, not the other way round. In his prime, he must have been a brilliant player.

I always think what must it have been like watching him week in week out in his prime.

Players like McGrath, Cowans snd Speed were different class when they had their spell with United.

Those 3 payers proved that when you hav class then even when you’re old and almost past it
Then due to intelligence they actually perform better.

Agree I was shocked at how good Cowans and especially McGrath actually were.
McGrath was slow but no player could beat him for pace or get past him, incredible anticipation and positioning.

Cowans was excellent but McGrath and Speed are two of my favourite signings ever. Simply because growing up through the 80s I never thought we would ever sign players of such quality and stature in the game.

Add to that how good they were for us even in their late 30s. I was a huge admirer of the 80s Liverpool team but for some reason, even before his non-descript performances, Rush's loan signing didn't have the same impact on me.
