Some of the feedback for the Wayne Quinn pod has been tremendous. Thank you!

As you may have seen, next up is Paul Devlin. As with the quinny pod, we hope to try and incorporate some of your questions into the conversation.
If you have anything you’d like us to ask him, fire away...

When he rejoined Birmingham a lot was made at the time he signed about being a big Birmingham fan. There were later some links with Celtic where a lot seemed to be made of him being a Celtic fan. Who does he actually support?

Birmingham and Celtic.

Brum lad, Celtic heritage.

Agree. He was a really good player for us but that match at home to Watford he just didn’t try.

As I recall it wasn’t that long after he’d signed a new deal for, what, 4 years? I equally thought Brown’s performances in 03/04 stank, but at least it was pretty clear from preseason onwards that he was seeking to leave after not agreeing a deal – Devlin gave the impression he was here for the long-term and then flipped really very abruptly on that.

He was a Villa fan growing up and was known as a Villa fan until he made it at the Noses and he was asked the question. Suddenly he became one of them. See also:

Initially the only attacking outlet when Warnock took over. Coincidentally when I got back into being a season ticket holder. I thought he was great.

This is a question that needs asking but I imagine it can't otherwise the interview will end.
Did a piece with him last week and he was very honest about everything, including his exit from SUFC

Definitely Celtic. He used to travel with his family to Celtic matches by coaches organised by the Birmingham branch of Celtic supporters club. He was talking about it in a programme not long after he joined us. He often wore the Celtic shirt at the Caribbean tour (ask the Blades fans who were there too). It was his agent Rob Seagal who did his best to convince the Blades fans that Devlin is a "true Blue". I wasnt convinced because I had already read about Devlin's love for Celtic two years earlier

Wasn't Devlin sent home from the tour immediately after it landed - he never left the airport according to the Wayne Quinn podcast and went back on the same plane he came on due to being drunk? Did enjoy that story actually in the podcast but my memories on Devlin are mixed. Great first few years and one of our standouts and a real warrior in those first few seasons but then as others have said lost a lot of respect for him at the end when he basically gave up. That Watford game was a shambles. Really soured what had been a decent career with the Blades up to that point - also recall him being desperate to get away from Brum but then went back?!

Shame as he could have stayed and been part of a few good years after that but Ndlovu came in and actually did really well.

Is this out anywhere and is there a link?
(Or are you doing a book about maverick footballers or something?)

That Watford (?) game after he came off the bench, fucking hell.

To offer some balance, Devlin, while limited in some ways, was perhaps the most consistently exciting player I've seen for United. Give him the ball out wide, and you know he'll deliver a cross. I sat on the Kop, wider of goal to where I sit now, and I knew that when Devlin disappeared behind that pillar that the ball was about to sail across goal.

Two games stick out. The first is that 4-4 against his old (and future, sadly) club Birmingham, which is mentioned in that dramatic games thread. Devlin played like a crossing machine that day, creating chance after chance.

The other is against Forest. If I remember the sequence of events correctly, Nigel Quashie went straight through one of our full backs. I think it was Kozluk, although it might have been Wayne Quinn. Devlin steamed in and twatted Quashie, Quashie twatted him back. Quashie was sent off but Devlin wasn't. Forest then spent the rest of the game trying to get Devlin back but couldn't get near him. Then, in injury time with the Blades leading, Devlin took a short corner and held the ball up. Presenting a stationary target for once, Forest player-manager David Platt launched himself two-footed into Devlin and nearly kicked him into orbit, and Forest went down to 9 men and the Blades held out.

I have an idea that Platt actually went into the United dressing room to apologise for that after the match although I could be wrong about that.

Don't know if i imagined this......but in a home game, didn't Devlin and (Marcus Bent) virtually come to blows once?.

I'm sure it happened - 30 yards out and Bent tries a speculative shot with Devlin very well positioned, which Devlin didn't take very well to.

That sounds a lot like Marcus Bent.

I'll stop quoting myself eventually, but I found a report on the Forest match in the Guardian. I didn't quite have the first incident right, but Kozluk, Devlin and Quashie were involved, and Platt did apologise afterwards, albeit in the media.

Yes, it was a night match. Happened at the Kop End.

Remember they had the Upper Tier. Was that match where London Road looked like a war zone afterwards? Think it was the season after where Blues brought about 800 fans (sat on the lower tier) and sang “Blues Blues Zulu Army” through half time.

I liked Devlin. I thought he was a very good player for us and was one of the best wingers we've had throughout my years of watching the Blades - and we've had some very good ones. He played best when he'd got his mad up, but sometimes he got his mad up so much that he got sent off. That was a limiting factor.

I must admit, I'd forgotten about his "downing of tools" as it has been described. It's a pity he's remembered for that - there must have been a reason for it and it would be good to ask him about it?

I remember him returning to play against us and the kop chanting "one greedy bastard" at him. So the general opinion seems to be that he left us for more money? Was that true, or were there other reasons? And is he really a "greedy bastard"? These are the key questions to ask him imo. I'd be careful how you ask him that last question though, in case you get his mad up! 😃

Devlin is still one of my favourite Blades players and gets in my favourite Blades eleven to the present day. He cost us just £200,000 and was the most creative player for us during his time with us. Sadly United were somewhat in transition and in early years under Warnock when Dev was at his best but largely not surrounded by equal quality, although of course he left of his own accord in 2002 whilst still only 29/30, just before that wonderful season. It didn't end well that's for sure, but he's always been positive from the comments I've seen from him on his time at United. I particularly remember his screamer v Blackburn, with Alan Kelly in the Blackburn goal, and a lovely strike against either Tranmere or Huddersfield at the Kop end, where he struck the ball beautifully first time with the outside of his boot. He had the ability to cross well without the need to skin his man.

Partly. He offered next to nothing for us when first signed under Thompson, often appearing up front, and for the first half of Bruce’s stint wasn’t that effective either. The turning point seemed to be when Bruce set him to Notts County on loan – he game back with a better attitude (perhaps realising he was possibly on his way out), we’d by that point I think ditched 5-3-2, and he was then more impactful. He was with Smith probably out best player under Heath, and Warnock’s style suited him well. But it took him about a year to get going.

Listening to him talk he answered many of your questions without needing to be asked but how passionate he was about his feelings towards how it ended at United was really good. Pod should be out tomorrow hopefully, it’s well worth a listen.
