Did he put a foot wrong?

Absolutely quality display from him as soon as he came on. Demanded the ball and used it purposefully. I watched him with awe from the minute he stepped onto the pitch and I can honestly say that I don't think he misplaced a single pass.

Not all of them were sideways/backwards, either - some fantastic balls through the lines to find Baxter/Sharp.

We were all hoping that was what Hammond was going to bring to the table but if anything Couttsy showed him how to control a game with purpose. Probably helps the further a game gets on of course, and being 2-0 up.

Well played!

Side note: Kieran Wallace was outstanding too. Really determined effort and got forward superbly.

Coutts was great, but we need players who can do it when the game is tight and space is limited. So many of our players look great as second half substitutes.
I agree in general, but in this case the game did still very tight, even when we were 1-0 up. We struggled to find the forward passes and space in the right areas of the pitch (not our own half!) until Coutts came on.

Seems Hammond needs to get up to match speed pace , trouble when you arent playing regurly
but will be a fine addition when up to speed
Pleased Coutts was on point

Coutts did well when he came on, but there was more space in midfield than in the first half/earlier in the game.
This will be the issue. Coutts was good tonight - but the skills he showed aren't really in question. He doesn't have the physical attributes or engine necessary when it's tight and we are facing good athletic midfielders.

Well played tonight though. :)

Coutts was very good when he came on, I actually think that sub had a hand in the 2nd goal as he was getting the ball and moving it on abit quicker than we was before.

Hammond show qualities tonight which proved to me that he will be an asset, I liked the was he dropped 3/4 yards deeper so that when he got the ball he'd have time and space to turn and pick a pass.

This must have fucking killed you alco :D
Though I think we have too many average players and Coutts will prove to be one of them - make no mistake I want to be wrong about it. :)

Be fair to him though ,he is constantly on the look out demanding the ball ,great link up player.

No, certainly, wasn't a criticism of him or playing down what he brought... I've always maintained that there is a player in him if he can get fit/improve his ability to move...

Just don't think it's a fair direct comparison as the midfield had changed somewhat by that point.

I thought it was crying out for him ,it was his type of game although when he was taken off Hammond was just playing himself in I thought. Maybe they could play together in future and drop Basham back ,because if there was a weakness tonight it looked like our centre backs to me.

Pretty much sums it all up.

I want the Paul Coutts who was a twenty year old at Preston and when he first went to Derby.

Coutts showed for the ball a lot, only to pass it straight back to the defence. For me, he didn't show enough intent to move forward with it, but then you could level that at most of our team tonight..........

He did so a great deal more than Basham. And he showed for receiving passes more as well. Whether he can do that over 90 minutes is another matter.

Hammond was better in that respect as well but didn't quite link up with the attack so well. Also he was careless with a lot of passes early on but I think we can forgive him this as he signed today. Hopefully he'll settle in and show us his quality within a few games.

Agree completely with that but does it mean this season we have to be patient and play ourselves into games then our quality will shine through as teams began to tire. Fleetwood did press well in that first half much to the frustration of some of our fans but looked knackered with 30 mins to go. People believe that teams should just come here and lie down because were "Sheffield United" but our midfielders struggling to pick passes is as much down to Fleetwood good pressing as it is our lack of movement.

We didn't attack midfield during most of the first half tonight, largely because we conceded it to Fleetwood.

We may as well have put out a midfield of traffic cones until Coutts came on

I was going to start a thread on him too. I thought he was great and showed exactly what he can do.

If we can get him and Baxter at their best every game there aren't many midfielders in the league as good.

Campbell-ryce though. Sorry, its not his thread but my god he is dog shit. Takes a player on with ease, clearly our most gifted player in terms of taking on a man and trickery etc. Got to be behind centre halves and goalkeepers for his crossing ability.

Our players don't have to charge forward with the ball all the time, you realise that? Quick passes between our players like that is what drags their players out of position, leaving holes to exploit. Coutts pretty much had the perfect game when he came on, they couldn't live with him. Or would you rather he got the ball and just aimed it at Adams or Sharp, whether they're in space or not?

Forget Dan Burn, move Bash back to centre half alongside Edgar or Collins and give Coutts and Hammond a run together in midfield with Baxter pulling the strings in a 4-3-3......goals, goals, goals!

Howard

Freeman
Basham
Collins/Edgar
K Wallace

Coutts
Hammond
Baxter

Adams
Sharp

Brilliant but didnt Baxter do similar further forward with a lot less ball and space to collect?

1. I agree, they don't have to do it all the time.
2. See number 1.
3. They didn't have to, he hardly ever went forward.
4. In Coutts defence, Adams didn't help the situation with his non-movement.

For me, the movement of our team in general was piss-poor last night. A lot of the time Coutts didn't even look up to play a pass when he received it, it went straight back to the defence in litttle "triangles". IMO.

Our 2 Centrebacks saw far too much of the Ball last night, they will get picked off against better sides

Still too many sideways and backwards passes, even when the opportunity was there to go forward

Overall a steady enough performance, Adkins getting some options, JCR appears to not be one of those

Amen, although i would personally have been a bit harsher than "steady" ;)
For me, JCR had a bit of a shocker last night.
